I was talking with a Christian buddy of mind who brought up morals for some...strange reason...anyway, it lead to her saying,
" If there is a God, ok. If there isn't, then no one has morals because life is meaningless. There is nothing to do but die. "

( Although I can't believe her mostly because she BLINDLY, as she even told me, puts faith in this higher being without evidence she can provide but only believes it because it is the only thing bringing joy to her. I'm alright with being happy but being ignorant is alittle different... )

But this raises a question, DOES a deity effect morals?
Is like meaningless without a higher power?
I ask, you answer. =D

A diety strips you of morals by turning you into either a retard, a bigot, an extremist, or a psychopath.

Just tell her she is the immoral one because she requires the fear of spiritual retribution to be good.

When I was a Boy Scout I was used as an example as to why people can't have morals without a god, as the example of a person with high morals... I was an Athiest at the time too.

I find it interesting that people find that life is meaningless without an afterlife or a higher power, or that it means that no one can set their own behavioral standards. Even if one day, the fact that I was alive will fade out of all existence, I'm still alive now. I'm conscious, I experience things; my life matters to me.

On the subject of morals, I think belief in a higher power, and especially in an organized religion, definitely affects what your morals are. However, lack of belief in a higher power doesn't automatically mean you have no morals. I base mine on logic and the ability to put myself in another person's shoes.

I always thought it was funny when people said we have no morals because we don't believe we'll go to hell, haha. I mean, aren't they implying that the only reason they're "moral" is because they're afraid of going to hell, if the only reason we're not is because we're not afraid? It tends to put things in perspective for those people when you say that they only act good so they can go to heaven. It usually makes them realize the flaw in their argument when they realize that there are other reasons to be good.

Or the stick and carrot of heaven.

Either way it cheepens the supposed good deeds of the person because they are expecting a reward/ fearing a punishment.

How does a meaningless life relate to an immoral existance because the lack of a deity?

I think some people assume that if someone doesn't believe in a higher power and/or an afterlife, they have no motivation to be moral. I can see where they come from, too: if we all just rot in the ground after we die, what does it matter if someone was good in life or not? Chances are, what they've done in life will be forgotten in a few generations after their death anyways.

However, that reasoning doesn't account for the fact that many atheists still care about what happens during their lives, because that's what we're experiencing. For me, that in itself is motivation to have and uphold at least some sort of moral code.

Since atheists don't confess their sins, we live with guilt for the rest of our lives.

So basically, your friend is accusing you of being immoral? This argument from theists is, in my opinion, one of the most vile at its heart. Whenever I hear something like that, I reply:

I have done good deeds without expectation of acknowledgment, let alone eternal reward.

You (religious person/s) may do good deeds, but may have expectations of eternal reward and acknowledgment from your deity (or deities), and can you ever totally separate your actions from your beliefs? In other words, can you ever claim to do a good deed outside of your religious beliefs?

Which is more moral, doing good in anticipation of judgment and reward, or doing good for goodness's sake?

If I get my morals from god, you always know what my morals will be.
If I get my morals from myself, you don't know what they will be.

At least, I think that's what those people think. Of course it's stupid because they aren't getting their morals from god, they're getting them from their own mind or from their family or something, and just pretending it came from god.

Wow, this topic was from WAY WAY back. Didn't think it still stayed up. You guys love bringing my topics life. ^^

Anyway, from what I have found, most people find that their reason for believing Atheists have no morals are either:

A. They do not follow the rules/laws of a god and therefor do not understand the difference between good or evil and have no right to say what is good or evil.

B. The soul must contain the holy spirit. Without it, you aren't human. Therefor, you can't tell right from wrong technically.

C. Atheists are emo douche bags.

D. God hates Atheists, Jews, and/or fags.

I hate when I hear these answers, it really makes me iffy as hell.
