Cammi sat at the kitchen island with her nose in a sketchbook while Jake hummed happily. He stirred a pot of soup, his muscular chest covered in a ‘kiss the cook’ apron. She looked up at him every once in a while to steal a peek. It just wouldn’t be right to give him the satisfaction to know she loved ogling him.
He dipped his finger in the mix and popped it into his mouth. “Mmm. Delicious. Want a bite?”
“Depends,” She grinned, crossing her hands underneath her chin. “Do I have to use a spoon?”
Jacob laughed. “Yes, you do.” He ladled out a small sample and walked it over, teasingly rubbing the edge of the spoon along her lip before slipping it in. “So? Does it pass?”
Cameron moaned. Oh, what a man! What a man! “I.friggin.love.you.”
“Ditto, baby.”
The couple leaned in, Cammi sliding her sleek form against the counter top. They were a hairs breath from kissing when they heard a gasp.
“Daddy, no! She’ll steal your soul!” That was Carrie Sue, she knew it. Cameron’s brows furrowed. That kid had terrible timing.
“What makes you say that?” Jake nodded towards the table. “Sit down. Suppers almost ready.”
“No,no,no!” Now that was Hsin. His tail lashed against the side of his crutch. “Kisses are bad. Girls steal your souls~”
“Your sooouuuulllllsssssss” Sybil and Bella said in unison.
Honestly, despite their looks, they could pass for twins.
To see them all there, together, standing as a squad against intimacy made Jake laugh. It made Cameron angry. Why couldn’t she kiss her fiancé, in their own home? Her body posture said as much. She crossed her arms and pouted.
Hsin hobbled over to her. He dropped his crutches and latched onto her leg. “Don’t be mad, momma. S’not your fault. All girls steal souls.”
“Hey! Not all girls, just the old ones.” Carrie Sue huffed. “Your bigger than me,” Hsin pointed out.
Jake came around the island with the pot in his gloved hands. “Hey, cut it out you guys. Girls don’t steal souls, they steal hearts. And Cammi stole mine a long time ago, so drop it.” He grinned.
Hsin’s dark cheeks paled. Sybil gasped and covered his mouth, Bella buried her face in his shoulder and Carrie Sue gaped.
It was pleasing. The first time in forever that they had actually shut up, but she didn’t like it. Cameron rolled her eyes. “Ignore him. Your dad’s a butt.”
“Nope,” Hsin shook his head. “Daddy’s a butt face. See, right there. On his chin.”
Jake flushed and Cameron laughed. “That’s my boy!”

“Chocolate chip.”
“Peanut-ty”
“Chocolate chip.”
“Peanut-ty.”
“Boys.” Cammi growled, setting her mixing bowl onto the counter top. Both boys looked up at her, expecting some kind of reprimand when she held up two packages. “We can make both.”
Sybil bounced excitedly, standing up in the barstool so he could lean over as far as possible to watch his mother work. Hsin was the smarter one. He grasped the grooves in the marble tile and pulled himself up onto the island, sitting with his legs dangling over the side right next to the woman. “How chu make them?”
“Well,” She reached over to sit Sybil on her other side. “There’s directions on the back, see? Here’s the ingredients we need. Three large eggs.” Hsin pointed to the egg basket. “Check. Brown sugar.” Sybil held up the package. “Check. “ Cameron went down the list, alternating between which of the boys would hold up the item they needed for their own specific cookie batch.
She brought out another bowl, gave it to Hsin while she passed the original off on to Sybil. The little Eilian had trouble holding it, so he scotched back, sitting it between his legs. Hsin happily coddled it on his lap, his tail coming up to act as a barrier between the mix and the floor.
Cammi tucked her hair behind her ears before continuing. Normally Jake would be in here doing this while she did yard work, but ever since they’d gotten that new lawn mower she couldn’t seem to get him off the damn thing. Boys and their toys.
She emptied out the peanut butter into Sybil’s bowl, then the chocolate chip into Hsin’s. Then she cracked the eggs, just so there wouldn’t be any shell in the mix. “Okay, now we had the vegetable oil.”
Sybil lifted the measuring glass up and dumped it into the bowl, giggling as it sloshed up on the sides. “Can I eatz it now, momma?”
“No.” She laughed, poking his nose. “You haven’t even stirred it yet.”
“Oh.” The little uni pouted. Looking into the bowl, he promptly stuck his hand in the mix and started stirring it around.
Hsin looked over, openly gaping, much the same as Cammi. But since she wasn’t getting mad at Sybil, Hsin stuck his hand into his bowl and started stirring too.
She wanted to snap at them, tell them that they had a mixer, but the look of concentration on their faces was too priceless to break.
While they were busy little bees, she added in a touch of water. “Make sure you get out all the bumps.” After a little bit, she took Hsin’s bowl for an inspection, then Sybil’s. “Lookin’ good. Clean up and I’ll pop these in the oven.”
Hsin started suckling on his finger’s the moment Cammi turned away to dollop out the dough. It was so goooooddddd~ And the chocolate chips? Amazing! He turned to look at Sybil, quirking up his tasseled ear. “Chu okay?”
Sybil held up his fingers with a frown. “Iz under mai nails. And I’m still hungwy!”
“Dun worry. Coma’s quick, right?”
Cameron turned around and looked at the back of the packages. “Sorry, guys. They won’t be done for another fifteen minutes.”
“How longs that?” Hsin asked.
“Half the time of a t.v. show.”
He tossed his head back in a dramatic groan that had her laughing.

Back tracked for June
This month was a whirlwind. With three other kids, you would think that Hsin would be upset to be ignored sometimes, but he isn't. Anytime I was ever stressed he was right there to do something silly to make me laugh.
He's made some friends as well. First was a little winged girl named Ember, who led us around a cave. Hsin really took a liking to her, mainly because she was the first kid he's met yet that met him head on and didn't shy away.
Then we met Tamara at the beach. Carrie didn't like her, but Hsin was curious. He wouldn't shut up the whole way back! He asked me why all kinds had wings and when I told him I didn't, he told me thats because I was old.
Go figure.
Jake leaves him at daycare with Carrie and Bella most of the time. All the other kids seem to generally like him, but I think it's becasue he's like a night light at nap time.

Guess who joined the scouts?
Okay, well, it's not official since he's too young, but Hsin's been going to every meeting since our neighbor invited him to go along with his two boys. He loves it! Every Wednesday he'll come home with a new knot, or a hiking technique or some other thing that he doesn't really understand.
So naturally we went camping.
And he panicked.
All the noises and sounds of the woods terrified him. Hsin stayed in his tent most of the time. Oh, he played outside in the sunshine, but we had to stand with him when he wanted to use the restroom because he kept thinking that Carrie would see him.
Jake took the kids fishing. I took a whole memory card full of pictures. It was hilarious! Hsin make fun of his papa because all Jake caught was a minnow, while Hsin got a little bass.
Next week, it's off to the theme park. I guess this'll be the way I find out if he's scared of heights or not.

Ironically enough, having two DNA donors who love to fly doesn't mean that your going to like it.
The theme park was a disaster. I've never seen a kid that terrified before. Hsin was eager enough at first, and he only rode the kiddy rides because he wasn't tall enough, but still. The slow ascent up really got to him. And don't even get me started on the ferris wheel.
He was so tense all day that he made himself sick. I was scared he was going to have a panic attack so while Jake took the kids on more rides, we sat down for a drink of water and a snack. When he calmed down, we just kinda...walked around. He was still generally interested in little things, even if he didn't move from my hip. Then he found the carousal and asked if we could ride. So we did.
ALL DAY.
