I've always known legato to be like every note is tenuto: long and connected. But still tongued. But my curent band director uses is interchangeably with slurring, so I'm a little confused now.

I've got All-State auditions coming up super fast and need to get this straight as soon as I can. Can anyone clear up the issue for me?

That's weird...I've always thought of legato as a very light tonguing. It's sort of almost a slur, but not quite. It's hard to explain for me. xd Do you play a reed instrument? For me, it sort of feels like I'm slightly touching the reed when I tongue it.

Legato means smooth and connected. Not quite slurred, but almost. You're first thought was pretty much correct. It's like playing every note tenuto, but with less powerful articulation. Sorry if this didn't help.
