If you didn't realize it already, Valentine's day is coming up and I'm curious as to how it fits into your life. Does your religion recognize it as special? Do you celebrate it at all?
The Catholic Church no longer celebrates Valentine's day. For me it's more of a day to celebrate family (a couple of birthdays on Valentine's day).

P.S.: Or Christmas for that matter ...

I don't really care much for Valentine's day. My sister and I both have a birthday this month (mine on the 27th and hers on the 29th), so that's what I tend to focus on during February.

Artto Valentine's day's got nothing to do with religion. Just like Halloween. razz P.S.: Or Christmas for that matter ... you forget that Christmas just has nothing to do with Christianity now, but they originally made it from a pagan holiday. Its just no longer viewed as a religious holiday by the general public.

Most Muslims do not celebrate holidays like Valentines day because theyre not..1) National holidays of specific countries 2) Islamic celebrations This video explains why Muslims do not celebrate Valentines Day quite well. BUT for me, Valentines Day is my wedding anniversary heart So we celebrate our anniversary.

i refer to valentines day as: I-am-pathetic-and-im-gonna-sit-around-and-remind-myself-of-it-Day. Not religious at all. Except maybe praying to the porcelain gods the day after.

I don't look at it as a religious holiday, even if it was, it still doesn't stop none religious people for celebrating it. No one would care if it was.

V day is secular
a time to use guilt to get jewelry, supposedly
anything that has too much Hallmark imprint leaves me cold, it's all commercial and not personal any more

St. Valentines day became the day of celebration of St Valentine, the patron saint of pink hearts and chocolate.... before that the day was when the young, unmarried romans would swap out their relationships to "try out" a new significant other (I'm assuming that they didn't if they had fallen for the guy/girl they were with) and wasn't really a holiday at all...
Today valentines day is many things, including a great day to guilt ones boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/fiance into getting you stuffed animals, jewelry chocolates, or many other unconventioal items.... a day to make singles sit in front of a tv and eat icecream... it is also part of the biggest break up season of the year (because of the Romans and their swapping of the significant others at this time?)
As time goes on it will become more commercialized and may lose all its romantic meaning, Halloween has candy and Christmas has presents, Valentines will likely have jewelry or stuffed animals or something like that ...

In my Penticostal church, we are forbidden to celebrate it. They believe Valentines day was a day put aside from God, which I dont understand at all. I mean, God IS love, so if we celebrate love **depending how** How are we not recognizing God??
Idk...My church is strict....

Idk...My church is strict.... i have never heard of that rule, and i have been splitting time between my local church and a pentecostal one of course, pentecostals seem less than monolithic; aren't they pretty much congregationally based? but i know some of our people are very opposed to Xmas and will not decorate or put up a tree then...

Yumi421 Yea, we pretty much dont celebrate holidays... And i guess it depends on the origion of the church eek That's no fun. The only reason I can see as to why a holiday shouldn't be celebrated (as a Christian) is if it takes away from God in any way.
