Hi everyone! I'm a not so good artist who woulld like to improve my anatomy and body positioning by doing what others reccomended; an art anatomical study. However I really didn't know how to approach it in order to get the most learning out of it... how would you do an anatomy study.

I'm learning anatomy too and what I've been doing is googling stock images and drawing them. You could also try posemaniacs.com and/or find some tutorials on dA.

I would advise against using photographs, posemaniac, etc. as your main method of studying anatomy. They can be wonderful as secondary methods, but your main method should be life drawing -- i.e. drawing a real person in front of you.

(I need to do more of it, myself gonk )

If you can get someone you know to model for you, or look around your community for live-model art groups that would be the best way by far. If you can't do that, looking at stock photos might help - but it becomes a little sketchy in the translation if you simply copy the poses.

A great book to look into is Anatomy for the Artist by Sarah Simblet. I love this book. <3

just out of curiosity, how does it make a difference using a stock photo instead of a live model?

A live model is in 3D, you can change your viewing angle just by moving your head - sometimes that helps you figure out the line of something (jaw, arm, etc) in relation to everything else. A photo is already in two dimensions, so sometimes things just look wrong - even in a photograph - because the human body has weird angles, especially depending on the vantage point the photo is taken from.

EDIT: You also get to see the volume of the shapes. In photos they are already flattened to two-dimensions.

What Navidian said. Furthermore, a photograph is someone else's interpretation of reality. Learning to interpret real life and translate it into the medium of your choice is an important skill, something you can't pick up from photos.

Hmm... I'll use my brother for the model XD Im not too good with drawing other people, but maybe my friends might donate their time....

Anyways, I'll look into that Anatomy for the Artist, but perhaps in the meantime I'll try stock photos, even if they arent much help.

Actually, I did my figure studies courses online. Only photos of figure models. But they're taken specifically for that purpose.

Start by learning the skeleton. Draw the skeleton with various gestures.
Learn major muscle groups. Draw the body with muscle in gesture.
By the time you do all that, you probably won't feel like you don't know anatomy anymore.

A mirror might work well in place of a model if one is not available.

A mirror is no good until you know what you're looking at.

wtf anatomy due to having ******** no idea what he's looking at. This person had a picture of a woman from some girly mag or site and heavily "referenced" it without thinking any idea of her structure.

You can't see what's under your skin with a mirror. If you know why the things on the surface are there, then you'll capture them correctly and be able to draw them correctly from memory.

Plastic surface due to not knowing what's underneath.

I'm not especially articulate tonight, so if it still doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll find another way to explain.

And how would using somebody else as a model vs using a mirror help with that?
