Do you have questions about what the Bible says on Sex and Sexuality? Currently at my College (University) Chapel we are discussing what the Bible has said on all sorts of issues from Masturbation to Modesty and Vanity. Having extensive knowledge in not only what the Bible says on these specific issues but having the experience to be able to answer these questions I am encouraging the guild to ask. It is important for you to ask questions and to get answers

If you have the questions please feel free to ask them here and I will answer
And no I won't feel awkward... if you would prefer you can send the question to my PM and I will post it here as anonymous that way no one will know who asked.

Notice: If you decide to answer a question here make sure you answer it thoroughly and with biblical text. No one is to condemn anyone here for their questions. If I feel that your answer is insufficient or incorrect I will say so, if you can't deal with that, I ask that you don't post

1. Is Masturbation really a sin? (answer post 4)

2. By definition, I'm bisexual. What I mean is, I'm attracted to woman, as well as men. But is being bisexual in and of itself the sin, or is it just the sexual act that is the sin? (answer post 11)

3. What about dating? I've heard a lot of Christians talk about dating. Some believe it's ok, some say that God will give you your 'mate' and to just wait. What does the bible say? (answer page 2 post 12)

Question 1. Is Masturbation a sin?

Ok first of all What is Masturbation:
As Defined by Dictionary.com Masturbation is:
Dictionary.com
the stimulation or manipulation of one's own genitals, esp. to orgasm; sexual self-gratification

Medical Dictionary
Erotic stimulation especially of one's own genitalorgans commonly resulting in orgasm and achieved by manual or other bodily contact exclusive of sexual intercourse, by instrumental manipulation, occasionally by sexual fantasies, or by variouscombinations of these agencies called also onanism, self-abuse

In and of itself no. The Bible has no reference to Masturbation being a sin at all. There are no verses found that even reference it. This was in fact the very first question asked at Chapel this week. However look at what Ecclesiastes 9:10a says

Ecclesiastes 9:10
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might

Now that I'm sure I have your attention, and after you are done laughing hysterically I'm sure you would love for me to continue.

From a biblical perspective Masturbation in and of itself is not a sin. However lusting after anything is a sin. Lets start by looking at the many verses specific to Lusting

Proverbs 6:25
Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes

Isaiah 57:5
You burn with lust among the oaks and under every spreading tree; you sacrifice your children in the ravines and under the overhanging crags."

Jeremiah 5:8
They are well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing for another man's wife

Jeremiah 13:7
your adulteries and lustful neighings, your shameless prostitution! I have seen your detestable acts on the hills and in the fields. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! How long will you be unclean?"

Ezekial 6:9
Then in the nations where they have been carried captive, those who escape will remember me—how I have been grieved by their adulterous hearts, which have turned away from me, and by their eyes, which have lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves for the evil they have done and for all their detestable practices.

Ezekial 16:26
You engaged in prostitution with the Egyptians, your lustful neighbors, and provoked me to anger with your increasing promiscuity.

Ezekial 20:23-25
Also with uplifted hand I swore to them in the desert that I would disperse them among the nations and scatter them through the countries, 24 because they had not obeyed my laws but had rejected my decrees and desecrated my Sabbaths, and their eyes lusted after their fathers' idols. 25 I also gave them over to statutes that were not good and laws they could not live by

Matthew 5:28
But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Romans 1:25-27
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

So in essence Lust is a sin, therefore because you are lusting while performing Masturbation, Masturbation is a sin as well.

Now I've heard some people ask
Quote:
What if I can masturbate and not lust

The question then becomes if you're not lusting then what are you thinking about? because if you're thinking about your TV/Toaster/Bike/Car while you're masturbating then there is a completely different issue there.... one that I'm not even going to touch... it is possible to masturbate without lusting, however... it is not our responsibility to see how close to the line we can come without sinning, it is our responsibility to move as far away from the line therefore we will not sin.

Also studies show that though Masturbation may provide you with sexual pleasure now, in the long run it will make things far worse for you. How you may be asking. Well for one inside your body it will begin to increase your sex drive, therefore making you want sex more and eventually in order to relieve that desire you will have to masturbate more and more.

Further more studies show that Masturbation becomes an addiction that once you are married, is hard to break. And it will cause you to have problems within your marriage if it is not stopped.

Yes I'm aware, either way the lust that is involved in Masturbation is a sin.

I can answer any other questions you guys might have
PostPosted: Thu Feb 25, 2010 1:36 pm

Before anyone says 'Hohoho, you're a sinner! You'll go to hell! (blah blah blah) I want to point out the fact that I DON'T act on any of these desires.

By definition, I'm bisexual. What I mean is, I'm attracted to woman, as well as men. But is being bisexual in and of itself the sin, or is it just the sexual act that is the sin?

That's a pretty good question, and the answer itself can sort of be found in the Bible. But for reference sake I'm not going to post the exact verses but I'm going to tell you that the only time homosexuality is ever mentioned in the Bible is as an action.

However there is a reason for that. The reason is that Homosexuality is not an identity issue. For a long time I believed that the reason it was never explicitly mentioned in the Bible except for action was because homosexuality by name did not exist. While that in and of itself maybe true, the fact of the matter is... Homosexuality and bisexuality is about what you do, not about who you are.

So yes bisexuality, homosexuality, transexuality, etc are all sins.

HOWEVER There is a distinction that must be made. There is a strong difference between struggling with a sin every day and asking God to forgive you for that sin, and openly accepting a sin and refusing to recognize it as a sin.

Now for scripture references specific to homosexuality see below

Romans 1:25-27
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversiohey exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

So what you're saying is that, yes bisexuality is a sin, because in definition with the bible homo/bi/etc... -sexuality is the action?

And in the last verse you quoted, are you trying to reference to my 'lusting' for women? Or just lust in general, saying that all lust is sinful no matter what gender it's directed to?

Well yeah, but he hilighted the part of men lusting for men, so I'm asking him if he ment it's 'extra-sinful' to lust for the same sex.

i think it is, men and women are ment to be with each other, not any other way.
