I am one of those people that once I get a feeling to do something, I do it in minute detail. As a steampunk inspired artist my work always have influences from actual historical facts, such as what happened during the 19th century, the fashions they ACTUALLY wore where those fashions were inspired from... what the political climate did to the way people thought and reacted, society and status and family life for all walks of life... All of it because that way you can build a more believable fantasy (and thus Steampunk) environment. Do you ever do these things? As in just dive into the wonderful world of factual history to create something fantastical? Oh and while we're at it... Some Gift art for the Guild.

My good sir, your artisic abilities are great! If I were rich with gold, I'd possibly request a piece. Unfortunately, I don't even know what I'd request.

As in just dive into the wonderful world of factual history to create something fantastical? I do this with all of my writing. One of the fun things about fantasy is that it doesn't have to be anything like reality, but I always find that if you base certain things off of actual history it lends realism to your world. I think you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find a fantasy writer who hasn't taken bits and pieces of history and tossed them in their novels. I spend way more time researching the era that I'm trying to emulate than actually writing. Even if I'm not using a historic event, I usually take customs, clothing, jobs, architecture, names, etc. from actual ancient and extant cultures.

Ooh, that is a wonderful image. I like that you kept the colors simple.
When I see a fashion or literary style that intreagues me, I delve into the history and mentality of it. I love to study how people think and what draws people to a subculture/ideal.

I do this kind of, but it usually stays in my head or only manifests itself as a few sequential doodles. I don't stick with things long enough to do big fancy works like that. I admire you sir.

I do the sorts of things you and Mr. Xtopher mentioned. The researching and molding the various aspects of a fictional world to the point of being believable intrigue me as much as the actually production. Looking at cultural practices, fashion, religious practices, mythology, and architecture.... deciding which aspects you want to use and which you need to study further to understand to a point from which you can intelligently use them.
Sadly, so far I've been able to actually produce preciously little, written or drawn. That, however, does not discourage me since the researching is fun and certainly some of the greatest fictional stories took years to write.
On a side note, even with my affiliation to Steampunk I feel I need to do a great deal more reading before I go about proclaiming I am a member of the culture.
