For me, this is the hardest question in the world; even worse than "what's your favorite color?" which depends only on mood. Picking your favorite author varies with what the last thing you've read was, what the last thing you've read by your 'favorite' author, how long ago that was and what mood you're in.
In general, my favorite author is a toss up between Mercedes Lackey, Douglas Adams and William Faulkner.
Mercedes Lackey sometimes just can't write. When she can though - damn!
Douglas Adams makes my day, in general, just by what he can pull out of his a**. With his work you can pick it up anywhere and be equally most delightfully lost.
William Faulkner is interesting. He's so deep and so versatile and vivid it moves me, but sometimes his versatility leads him to try to be unduly boring.
So, I put this to each of you who bother to read or respond to this post: Who is your favorite author and why?

That's really a difficult question because all authors in the world are like a rainbow It just wouldn't look good if it's only one colour... oki, my preferences are: Jonathan Stroud - I really like the way of the characters exspecially Bartimaeus because it isn't so heroic like O my gosh I have to save the world because my name appears quite often..
Lemoy Snicket - The stories are so...special and unique. Up to now I didn't find a book that's similar to his work.
Edgar Allen Poe - This time it's the feeling of the stories because even the shortest story is kinda moving
And of course a Lot more

I agree. Edgar Allan Poe has many good pieces. I also like Rick Riordan (because I'm currently reading the Percy Jackson series), J. K. Rowling (because of her character development and plots), and a few others.

I agree completely about Jonathan Stroud! It's amazing how many authors you love and just don't think about how amazing they are once you haven't picked them up in a while.

orson scott card is my favorite author. Enchanment being my favorite book by him.
i like him because while its fantasy its completely believable and well grounded in reality. his dialouges are realistic. his plots exciting. his characters real.
i also like suzon claire (though i've only seen one book from her).
as for lemony snicket.... he sucks. majorly. i tried to read his series of unfortunate events books because everyone and their dog seems to love them but my god were they awful. its like he wrote them for retarded four year old children. i literally think it made me stupider when i was forcing myself to read it for a while.

Wow this really is a hard question. In my opinion, a great author is a combination of all of those, not just one. ;]

I know, I just enjoy being difficult, HiCaR1!
I love Orson Scott Card, too, for all those reasons.
I don't have an opinion on Lemony Snickett however because I've never read anything by them. All I can tell you is that I'm a little kid at heart and I loved the movie <3

I'm loving Lemony Snicket because it is...true yeah it really is my opinion of life and I think he tells true and really painful things in a way you can cope with them...Of course the first impression is that it is very childish and a litte bit gaga <3 but i think you can learn a lot from the Baudelaires. For example if that many painful things and so much sorrow were in my life I, personally, would lay down, give up and cry, they don't. oh yeah and the weird thing about their special abilities only shows that EVERYONE has something he/she is good in, even if it doesn't seem useful, and can use this skills to make the life better. Finally, I have to say all I wrote seems really well-considered and stuff like that but yeah fist of all I enjoy the pain of others and adore things, that are a little bit unusual . mrgreen I really don't know my favorite author, maybe it's Poe or maybe just myself or someone I haven't read yet.
(BUT I can definatly say which author I don't like Stephanie Meyer, I swear this woman was sent from hell to torture the world with some bad writing)

For me, I am my favorite Author. Before you write me off as concieted or arrogant, hear me out first.
My thoughts are this: if you are a writer of any sort, then you have your inspirations and all. No one is sheltered enough to write on their own with no outside influence. I myself take the language of Poe, Fantasy of Paolini, vague deatails of Rowling, and bits and pieces from other works that I can't name. If someone is sheltered enough to not take from any outside sources, then odds are they grow poorly as a writer. Even here we learn and take from each other's works.
If you don't believe in your works, then as a starting writer, how can anyone else? Your cofidence is vital here, because if you doubt yourself, it shows in your works. An author has to not only believe in themself, but in the things they have learned. In this passion, a person has to grow all the time in order to keep up with their audience. Grammar, word choice, and flow are all things that everyone can work on, no matter what stage in your development you are in.
That's what I have to say.

There's a tie for me, Poe is amazing and I love his work. But. I also love Lacey Sturm, her songs have such depth, it sends chills down my spine. I'm not sure who to pick.

Sarah aka Vampire Girl its obvious, I love Stephenie Meyer and lately I liked P.C. and Kristin Cast (authors of the House of Night series) I totally agree with the Cast, but not Meyer. I read the first before she became more than just another author. Haven't read the rest of hers. Poe is a good writer period, and I like the poet William Blake. My fav poem of his is Tyger Tyger. Authors are Anne Bishop, Kelly Armstrong on my tops right now.

I wish I had something inspirational and incredible to say like Undesired Desire, but I'm afraid I haven't been around in the writing circuit enough to really know what I love and what I despise. What qualities are definitely essential and what you need to have readers be forever in love with your pieces. But, I like to think I have an idea sometimes.
In my opinion, the combination of all these qualities are what makes a writer so great. The unique style and personality conveyed in a person's writer is beyond value. Humor, like a spice, can't be overly used, but simply sprinkled in your writing when the reader doesn't expect it. Character development is a given. Realism also, especially in some fiction pieces. We need something to connect too, something we can actually see, hear, touch, taste, live vicariously through. That's what a good story does.
I too agree with Undesired Desire in many things:
Undesired Desire For me, I am my favorite Author.
"...If you are a writer of any sort, then you have your inspirations and all. No one is sheltered enough to write on their own with no outside influence..."
" ...If someone is sheltered enough to not take from any outside sources, then odds are they grow poorly as a writer. Even here we learn and take from each other's works... "
As for myself, I appreciate any good piece of writing be it Fantasy, Non fiction, Romance etc. Therefore, my taste in authors may vary...I like the Casts', their books keep me on edge, I can't put them down.
Stephanie Meyer is whatever, she doesn't pull me one way or another.
Edgar Allen Poe is a legend, I love his work.
Nicholas Sparks in his Romance. I love them heart
J.k Rowling, even though I admire her story and her creativity, I could never read her books. The movies I loved, the ideas, all of it. And I know you can never truly appreciate a movie/story unless you have read the books, but...I don't know. I've tried--forced myself actually. In my opinion, she takes to long to dive into the actual story. I don't know, simply my experience.
