I'm a little on the fence about this whole 2012 being the end of the world thing. I'm kinda leaning towards it being a metaphor for something we just can't comprehend yet. Any thoughts?

the theory is that the mayan calender ends december 21st 2012 and that then prophesies the end of recorded time.
the reality is that there are more than one mayan calenders and the next in line starts back up some time in 2015.
end of the world? no. its probably not even a phrophecy of anything more than some unsubstantial general "prophecy" from Nostradamus' writings.

People have been saying that they know the end of time since time began. Nothing to worry about.

While agree with all that everyone else has said prior. Scientifically, there is supposed to be a shift in the world's poles in 2012. While it won't end the world, it will cause some substantial climate change. As long a people aren't severly stupid about it, we'll all be fine.

I honestly doubt we'll even see anything as dramatic as a pole shift. I love end of the world prophecy, and it's supposed to have ended like, 60 or more times in the 30 years I've been alive so far. I'm still standing. Far as I'm concerned, the fooferah about the Long Count calendar is just hype. 3nodding

For the Rose is a Beautiful FlowerReminds me of a calendar program my father made on the C64, this was somewhen in the 80s, I can't remember when he said it would work until, but there was nothing significant about the last year the program would work for other than it was the last year the program would work for. I figure 2012 is only significant because it just happens to be the last year the made of that particular calendar, after all, they had plenty of time to prepare the next one biggrin A Beautiful Flower with Thorns

The Mayan calendar was also Astronomically based and the main reason it ends was because of a linear event.
Here is a piece published early last year explaining the significance of 2012.
What happens during this time—and we have to be really careful when we talk about this—there is an alignment that’s occurring because Earth does this little tip and this little wobble over long periods of time. As Earth tips and wobbles in its orbit, it changes the scenery of the night sky. It changes our orientation in space with respect to the center of our own galaxy –of our Milky Way galaxy.
Now, our own scientists have discovered—and they are publishing this openly—that the center of our Milky Way galaxy is a very powerful source of magnetic energy. The term they use is "magnetic filiments" that radiate from the center of our Milky Way. Where we are, in relation to that source of energy, has a huge effect on planet Earth. Sometimes we’re further away, and we’re tilted away from it, and the effect is less. Sometimes we’re closer or we’re tilted toward it, and the effect is greater.
On December 21st in the year 2012, we have a straight shot—a linear shot, unobstructed by any other planets or any other bodies in the solar system--where we have direct access to that field of energy.

All of these replies sound plausible, but this last one really got my gears turning. I currently us a book called "The Book of Synchronicity", which is a modernized version of the I-Ching, and it connects to the universal energies to help focused meditation. It works very well for me and has helped me in my life quite a bit. Furthermore; a nifty little YouTube video called "The Legend of Atlantis" continues deeper into energies and connects all religions, philosophies, and conspiracies into one belief system that kinda makes sense. I think everyone should watch these videos (about 3 hours long but split up into 10 minute segments) if you have the time and want to expand your personal knowledge. I think it's a pretty big eye opener (no pun intended) and if you all want, I could probably compile them into a Gaia playlist and just attach a link in my next post.

I believe it will be a spirtiual crossroads. Either humanity will continue on it's current path and bring about cataclysm to the planet, or will see the error in their ways and it will be the age of enlightenment. "End of the world as we know it" is the term an ex of mine used. ninja

Well, the Mayan calendar is not a linear calendar like the Julian Calender we use today, its a circular one. On December 21, 2012 the currant calendar ends. This does not mean that the world will end, it just means that the calender starts over. A new age in humanity is said to begin at that time, a great awakening of sorts. To many of today's beliefs, the world is in a sort of decline. It is their belief, and my own, that this new age will be a new incline, like we had around 500 bc. heart 4laugh

I enjoyed reading all of these theories and it tickles the logical-me. I think it is pure crap that everyone on the street is professing the end of the world. As far as the Mayan calendar goes, they either predicted a new age of humanity, or even a more simple reason, they were HIGHLY intelligent people, so it is possible that they figured they would be around after the 13th Baktun, so they just didn't make it go on any further. I personally think it's going to be a new age for humanity and we will have the ability to access our spirits more and possibly unlock new "senses" so to speak.

I am a severe skeptic. There are many things that make it seem false. Isaac Newton's theory is that it ends in 2060. But to me, it all depends on when a country decides to attack one country and then others start it too, or when something does happen. [Sun explodes, gamma ray burst, etc]. It all depends.
