xxxxxxxx It sounded like the world was ending outside, survivors could only hope that it was truth. Wind and rain pounded at her safe haven, the latest one anyway, tearing shingles off of the aged rooftop. Some of the windows had been broken out by looters, allowing the rogue wind to crash through the store like a bull in a china shop. The remaining windows rattled as a strong gust of wind knocked down a shelf across from her, spilling displays of magazines and Trojans. Ember watched as they tumbled across the floor like commercialized tumble weeds. All of it would have been amusing if she hadn't been bleeding out slowly.

xxxxxxxx"Damn it, where are they!?", she couldn't help but swear, "it should be around here somewhere." Turning over fallen shelves she rummaged through the mess, stepping on rotten fruit and kicking emptied boxes aside. One hand was pressed to her abdomen as blood pushed from between her fingers staining her shirt and jacket. Turning down the next isle she examined the crooked hanging sign as it swung dangerously in the storm but it was no use, the letters were beyond reading. Wincing as she pushed another fallen shelf aside leaving behind bloody handprints she sighed thankfully, opening up her bag and each individual box of first-aid supplies emptying the contents into her bag and tossing the containers aside, it would just take up room and would add unneeded weight.

xxxxxxxxStruggling to get to the back of the store she closed the heavy double doors, wedging a chair under the handles to keep anyone from surprising her. Quickly she placed her gun on the ground. There was just enough light from the skylights above her, though the wind was still howling outside there were no windows in the large inventory room. Taking the strap of her side bag gingerly from her shoulder she held her breath, hissing under her breath she shrugged her soiled jacket off and had to bite down on her lip to keep from crying out when she raised her arm to remove her shirt leaving just her bra. You've done it now, Em, she thought to herself. You just had to jump from the second floor didn't you? Scolding herself, there really hadn't been any other way out, and she'd aimed for the next rooftop but underestimated the strength of the infected getting through her barricade so quickly, they followed her to the top and at the last second she'd jumped. Nearly spraining her ankle she made it across the ally gun slung across her back. Lucky for her she'd caught most of her weight on her forearms and chest but she couldn't help the good sized gash that doubled her over in pain from landing on some broken glass. She fought through the pain long enough to put a good amount of distance between her and the infected but the adrenaline had worn off and she was feeling the effects of her injury.

xxxxxxxxShifting her weight onto her other leg she glanced around again, the supplies weren't depleted but anything that wasn't sealed in plastic or in a can had gone stale or was looted along with the rest of the store, but it was quiet in here and she felt almost safe. Swearing under her breath she touched fingers to the deep laceration hesitantly, unable to keep from screaming as she pushed her finger inside once, then again, pulling from it a shard of glass she hadn't known was there before. Throwing the piece at the wall, fingers covered in blood, she pulled her bag closer and slid down to the ground, leaning against a wooden crate taller than her while she was standing. Twisting the bottle of rubbing alcohol open she took quick deep breaths and then held it as she poured the burning liquid over her open wound, legs kicking weakly along the floor as tears pooled in her eyes before falling down her grime covered cheeks making tracks down her neck.

xxxxxxxxShaking her head, dark hair spilled in front of her eyes for a moment before she pushed that away with the back of her hand and cleaned them with the remaining alcohol from the bottle. Leaning back she used "liquid stitches" to close as much as she could before covering it with gauze and tape. It would hold and it wasn't so deep that it needed real stitches but she would be stuck here for the night. There wasn't anything more she could do, even though she was capable of stitching wounds there was no chance in hell she would be able to do it to herself, there wasn't enough whiskey in the world. Ember felt trapped here until the bleeding stopped, she could only pray that no one would find her. The building was open to anyone brave enough to venture out doors at night, if there was anyone else here but herself. Glancing around Em only had enough strength to pull her gun to her, finger on the trigger she turned her head towards the backdoor that lead outside and stared for as long as she could, ready for anything or anyone to come barging in. After an hour or so, exhaustion and the fact that she'd lost so much blood won over her consciousness, sprawled on the floor, shirtless and bleeding she looked as vulnerable as a baby in a lion's den.

Some said the world would end in fire, others said ice. It would appear that they were both wrong. The world seemed to be slowly grinding to a halt at the teeth and claws of so many sick people. Sick people and a damn powerful storm. Max hadn't seen a storm like this in a long time, let alone walked through one. The dim red light from the headlamp he wore barely cut through the sheets of driving rain. His canvas jacket was soaked through, and his hands would be shaking if they weren't clutching the shotgun so tightly. He needed to find some form of shelter quick, or he'd be regretting it for a while.

He could see a back door just up ahead, but only barely. a burned-out Civic hatchback was blocking the alleyway, though. He climbed over it as quietly as he could, but barely held in a shout as the jagged edge of the crunched fender cut a gash in his leg. He muttered a stream of every curse word he knew, as well as some new ones he made up on the spot, as he pressed both hands on the wound. It wasn't deep, just all kinds of painful. When his face was red and his breath was gone, Max let go of his leg. He needed to bandage it up, he knew, but he'd used up the last of anything adhesive he had days ago. The puddle he knelt in was getting redder and redder the longer he stayed there, reminding him that he needed to find shelter, and now something to patch himself up.

The door wasn't that far away now, just a few steps. maybe they had a first aid kit. On the other hand, maybe a mob of infected were waiting for him. As the rain poured down, the wind blew, his clothes soaked, his leg bled and the puddle became bloodier, he made his decision. He picked up his gun and clutched it as tightly as he could, and limped towards the door.

He stumbled the last couple of steps, falling against the steel door with a thump. He grumbled and pushed himself off of it, moving to the wall beside it. He grabbed the door handle and twisted it to find it unlocked. That was either very good, or very bad, depending on what was on the other side. He readied his shotgun as he swung the door open and looked inside. A brief flash of lightning allowed him a glimpse of a woman sitting against a crate on the floor with bandages around her waist. He almost fired instinctively, but something stopped him.
"Are you infected, or healthy?" He called inside, keeping a foot in the door but the rest of himself out of any line of fire he thought the girl could have.

xxxxxxxx She couldn't hear his approach through the noise of the wind and rain beating down all around her. His colorful words were lost to her as his leg was torn into by the jagged metal of the vehicle. Through the haze of her exhaustion she thought she heard something, dark lashes seeming to stick together refusing to let her open her eyes. She was about to ignore whatever had woken her up if anything until she felt the rush of cooler air wash over her legs and bare chest. That's not right, there shouldn't be any breeze in here, she thought lazily to herself still for the most part passed out.

xxxxxxxxPicking her heavy head up she glanced towards the now darkened door way and caught the last of his voice. His voice...? Scrambling to stand her drowsiness forgotten for now, her eyes sharpened instantly as she tried to listen carefully through the sounds of the elements. "Who's there?" she yelled back at him as he'd called towards her. Picking her arms up further she glanced down the barrel of her rifle her entire focus on the cracked open door.

xxxxxxxxEmber had to admit she felt a bit embarrassed standing with a gun pointed towards the door, her heart thrumming in her chest, she shouldn't have been so careless. Her bandages pulled against tender skin and she winced slightly as she felt some of the wound reopening as she crouched behind the crate she'd been leaning up against. There was no quiet way out of this situation, she'd barricaded the doors and they'd hear her if she tried to knock them out of the way, uninjured she would have tried, but like this? No chance in hell. Setting her jaw in a hard line she waited for what seemed like a decade when in reality it was only a few moments.

xxxxxxxx"Show yourself!" she demanded, shifting her weight on her knees grounding herself to the floor, the butt of the rifle against her shoulder, finger hovering over the trigger she waited. If they were infected they would have come through the door already, but she wasn't sure what was worse, the infected or idiots with guns. Ember didn't like the idea of killing another human being but if they wanted what she had, or what they thought she had, she wouldn't hesitate to protect it and herself.

Max now had second thoughts about going inside, but the pounding rain beat any other option out of his head. He was cold, he was tired, he was injured. He would die if he tried to continue on to anywhere else. The thought that he could very well die of a gunshot within the next minute was very distant compared to the slow alternatives. Now, there was a thought that showed how far the world had fallen; 'Which way would I rather die?'

The woman inside demanded he show himself, which after such a pause likely meant she'd gotten into a position to fire on him should he make the slightest wrong move. This is where he had to rely on all of his charm to keep himself alive. Too bad he'd never seemed to have much charm at all.

"I am alone." He called through the crack in the door, raising his voice over the white noise of the storm. "I'm injured, cold, and wet. All I want is a place to dry off and patch myself up. I mean you no harm, and I'll be on my way when this storm lets up. May I come in?"

xxxxxxxx Sighing heavily she shifted again. Weighing the pros and cons of letting a stranger in, he said he was injured but could she trust his word? Did she have a reason to? A reason not to? "Alright, come in then..." Moving out from behind the crate she added quickly, "but slowly, and if you have a weapon I want to see it first!" She didn't lower her rifle but it wasn't pointed directly at him anymore, paranoid was better than dead, and it was that paranoia that had kept her alive for so long. The rain followed him in through the door, making the floor wet and chilling her as she reached for her tee shirt still laying across the floor. Keeping her eyes on him she reached down quickly, pulling one arm then the other through the tee and finally bringing it over her head as he finished coming all the way in.

xxxxxxxxThe bandage had completely saturated with her blood, and the darker stain on the man's leg attracted her attention as she motioned him over. Despite her better judgement she wasn't the type to turn away someone, especially when they were injured. "Come here, I'll patch you up." Turning her eyes away from him for the first time she set her rifle down on one of the supply shelves, kicking her own used bandages to the side and out of the way. Hooking a leg of a chair with the toe of her boot, sliding it across the floor for him it sit in she spoke first. "The names Ember, it's been a long time since I've run into anyone who wasn't.. infected."

xxxxxxxxA memory flashed across her mind's eye. The last encounter hadn't been a pleasant one, idiots with guns. She suspected the small group was already wiped out, they'd emptied a clip into a room she was hiding in before trying to bully her out of what little supplies she had. The infected had saved her that day, attracted by the commotion and the fire torches they'd been carrying. Silently she watched the man's movements, ready to disarm him if she had to. Dressed in her SWAT uniform the dark cargo pants held extra clips though most of the pockets were now empty. There was a hunting knife strapped to her upper thigh and the jacket on the ground would have had a matching kevlar vest, but she'd ditched it long ago preferring to pack light rather than carry around the extra seventy odd pounds of armor. The infected weren't fighting with bullets.

Max slowly moved his shotgun into the doorway for her to see, keeping the muzzle aimed at the ceiling and his finger off the trigger. He also gripped it tighter, in case an unseen someone was waiting just beyond the door, ready to snatch it away. When nothing happened, he opened the door wider and stepped through, bracing himself against the doorjamb as he looked around the room before moving any farther in. The door's springs pulled it securely shut behind him as he limped over to the chair she pulled out for him.

"Thank you for this, Ember." He said as he dropped into the chair. "And yes, It's good to see not everyone still alive is sick in one way or another, and even better to see someone with some form of actual training. First aid or otherwise."

He knew he had to count his survival as a gift granted to him by the ignorance of others. He'd stumbled upon more than a few 'secret stashes' people had left open or unguarded, he'd been able to outgun some would-be attackers merely because he was familiar with his weapons.

"I guess I should introduce myself, as well. Maximilian Evans, but just call me Max. I think I can honestly say it's a pleasure to meet you, especially under current conditions."

xxxxxxxxEmber looked up at him as she kneeled to examine his leg. Pulling the ripped pants away from the wound she rolled it up from the bottom as rain water made a small puddle at his feet. "No need to thank me yet, infection isn't an issue it's wether you can move quick enough with the injury." Giving him a half smile it quickly turned into a grimace as she twisted the wrong way, pulling at the wound to her abdomen. A waterfall of dark hair covered the side of her face and she hoped he hadn't seen, she might have been in pain but she was far from the damsel in distress.

xxxxxxxxSitting on her heels she brought his leg onto her thigh, twisting it from left to right slowly to catch the last of the remaining light. She didn't look up from his injury as she answered him, pressing some gauze against the gash and using her other hand to wipe away most of the blood, she would never tell him but she was examining the wound a bit more closely and with a skeptic eye. He could have gotten this anywhere, and if he'd gotten himself infected by a bite or scratch she'd know. "It's nice to meet you, Max though I don't think you'll like me much when I flush this out.. looks like there might be rust embedded pretty deep, what'd you get yourself with?"

xxxxxxxxTwisting a pen light on she trapped it between her teeth, moving his foot between her thighs she glanced up at him then trapping his foot, speaking with the light still in her mouth, "I don't want to do this but I don't have any other way to lessen the pain, just try not to kick me and I'll work as fast as I can." Picking up the canteen laying beside her she removed the saturated piece of gauze and washed away the blood from his leg first, creating a pink puddle between them, staining her pants further though it didn't make much of a difference in it's appearance.

xxxxxxxxWhen the wound was finally clean and bandaged she, wiped her hands on her jeans and sat down completely, releasing his leg. "There isn't much here by means of food but I did see some cans under the shelves at the front of the store incase you're hungry. Where were you headed?"

Max was a little uneasy letting this woman he just met work on his wound, but she seemed to know what she was doing. "It wasn't an infected, first off, so you don't need to worry too much. There was a crashed car out there in the alley, and piece of the fender caught me." He explained as she looked over the wound. "And please, I've gone through worse than flushing out a wound. Besides I imagine tetanus would feel a bit worse."

Though he said that, he still had to grip the sides of the chair to keep from moving his leg as she cleaned it. The last thing he wanted to do was worsen the condition of her wound. As she worked on his relatively minor injury, he couldn't help but admire her selflessness. She could have easily sent him away, or even shot him for his supplies, as others had tried to do, yet she was bandaging him up when she herself was injured much more grievously.

"Well, call me stupid, but I really didn't have a set destination. My previous shelter proved less than adequate for the current conditions, and i was trying to find somewhere else to wait out the storm. I suppose I found that." He explained as he stood and moved his leg to keep it from stiffening. "Thank you for patching me up, Ms. Ember, shall I rustle up some food to repay you?"

xxxxx One...Two...Buckle my shoe. Three...Four...Shut the door... Jessica had been repeating the same old nursery rhyme to herself, trying to keep her sanity. She remembered when her brother would sing it to her to make her giggle, or to scare her. She looked up at the decaying building in front of her and looked back at the ground. She hadnt seen her brother in god knows how long. Oh wait...If God existed, he wouldnt have ended the world with a life threatening plague and took away my brother. Jessica sighed and kicked a stray rock that was in her path. She had no idea where she was going, but she liked the feel of the rain running down her body. Jessica felt a sharp pain shoot up her leg and she laughed weakly. Ahh... I dont know when to quit. I did a hell of a job trying to pull a Spider Man move. Her leg throbbed and eventually she had to stop, the pain becoming too much for her to handle. She saw a nearby building and prayed that the door was open. She limped across the street and pushed open the warped door. It gave way after a good push and she sighed in relief. Jessica shut the door behind her and leaned against the wall, sitting down and looking at her leg. She knew she probably either hurt it pretty bad or broke it. She banged her head on the wall and cursed at herself, then straightened it out, resting it for a bit.

She really couldnt believe that it had been so long since everything went down. With the ignorant doctors trying to create a vaccine that just ended up killing everyone. Jessica sighed and closed her eyes, hoping that there were more survivers. Ones that she didnt have to shoot.
