Hello everyone~! Happy New Year and welcome to the Haiku contests~! Before we get started please observe the rules of the guild:

~❀~ All Gaia Terms of Service apply.

~❀~ Respect one another.

~❀~ No begging and/or asking for donates because this is a contest silly. You need to participate in order to get a chance to win!

~❀~ Don't stretch the page. No one wants to use the scroll bars.

~❀~ No bumping here, we have a specific thread for that on the main page.

~❀~ Speaking exclusively in Japanese would be an awesome display of your skills, however, please DON'T do it here in respect to those who cannot understand it.

~❀~ Breaking any of these will result in a warning. Then it's up to the almighty Yamaxchan and Miss Chloie to decide your fate if you break any more. twisted

So what is this Haiku you speak of?

According to Wikipedia:
~❀~ Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry, consisting of 17 moras (syllables), in three metrical phrases of 5, 7, and 5.
~❀~ Haiku typically contain a kigo, (seasonal reference) and a kireji or verbal stopping point.
~❀~ In Japanese, haiku are traditionally printed in a single vertical line, while haiku in English usually appear in three lines, to parallel the three metrical phrases of Japanese haiku.
~❀~ Previously called hokku, haiku was given its current name by the Japanese writer Masaoka Shiki at the end of the 19th century.
~❀~ Different types/variations of haikus include:

Senryū:
a poem that is written in a similar form and emphasizes irony, satire, humor, and human foibles rather than seasons; it may or may not contain a kigo and kireji.

Haibun
a combination of prose and haiku, often autobiographical or written in the form of a travel journal.Yokoi Yayū(1702-1783) completed the form of Haibun.

Haiga
a style of Japanese painting based on the aesthetics of haikai, and usually including a haiku. Today, haiga artists combine haiku with paintings, photographs and other art.

Kuhi
The carving of famous haiku on natural stone to make poem monuments known as kuhi (句碑) has been a popular practice for many centuries. The city of Matsuyama has more than two hundred kuhi.

And what does a haiku have to do with New Years?

~❀~ Plenty! The New Year traditions are also a part of Japanese poetry, including the haiku.
~❀~ The Japanese have often written a haiku with words that reflect the changing season as well as ones that speak of the "firsts" of the year. For example the "first sunrise", "laughter", "dream", or "letter" of the year.

The Contests

~❀~ Put simply, use your creative skills to write a haiku according to the section requirements!
~❀~ At least 2 people must participate in each section in order for the contest to happen.
~❀~ You can enter in more than one section - meaning you can win more than once!
~❀~ There are 4 different Haiku contests:

1.) Write a haiku about anything related to the New Years.
(Like your "firsts of the year" or new years resolutions)
2.) Write a haiku about about the year of the Tiger/tigers/zodiac animals.
3.) Write a haiku about anything relating to the My Japan Guild.
4.) Write a haiku about anything you want, but it must be funny!

~❀~ Work MUST BE ORIGINAL. Plagiarizing is bad and copying someone else's work is bad karma for the new year!
wahmbulance ANYONE CAUGHT CHEATING WILL RECEIVE ONE WARNING. AND IF YOU ARE CAUGHT CHEATING AGAIN YOU WILL BE SMASHED IN YOUR DIGITAL FACE WITH THE CREW MEMBERS BAN HAMMER AND CAN NO LONGER BE PART OF THIS AWESOME GUILD. wahmbulance (This applies to ALL event contests.

~❀~Examples of what a haiku looks, and should feel like:

About the seasons:
Winter is so cold...........................................5
May the Spring bring new life soon...............7
Let the seedling grow....................................5

About a first:
My first kiss with him.....................................5
I wish it would be sooner..............................7
Melt my lonely heart......................................5

Tip: You can clap out the syllables if it makes it easier. For example:
Win(1) - ter(2) - is(3) - so(4) - cold(5).

DO NOT USE THOSE THEY ARE EXAMPLES ONLY.

How to enter:

~❀~Copy the correct form and post it in this thread, then fill it out with your information. If it is not filled out correctly, you might not be entered into the contest!
~❀~For multiple entries: Submit each poem separately with the corresponding form

Judging:

~❀~ After deadlines are past, a poll will be set up for each contest with guild members deciding the winning haiku.

~❀~ The first one to make it to 10 votes will win first place - though the amount of votes may very depending on how many people cast votes.

~❀~ There will also be second and third place winners in each category.

~❀~Must be in the 5 - 7 - 5 syllable format, or it will not be counted

Well the haiku are great and all, but why should I enter? I don't like writing poetry, and I'm not great at it at all~!

I thought you'd get a kick out of that - but to me you and Yama are almighty in the guild. LOL!

Yeah, I agree, poetry intimidates me too I think because when people learn about it in school - it's usually serious. I mean, whoever studied Shel Silverstein or Dr. Seuss in high school - or even college? : / I think it would help if teachers included more fun poetry in the mix.

And yes, try to make a haiku - that would be great! : D
