If you knew that you were able to go back in time, and come back safely, would you go back to the Victorian era with the right kind of technology to start a Steampunk age? Or would you stay in this time and not try it, because you don't want to mess with history?
Short topic is short.

Of course I wouldn't! Didn't we all learn anything from The Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury? Sure, I'd be tempted, but the risks of that power source leading to something like the completion of the Final Solution is too great.

It might work and be really neat and all, but chances are it wouldn't...Unfortunately.

I never read that book ^^ Although that is a big risk.

You mean, you don't think I'm not already trying to do so? XD Shooooooot. That's really hard. I mean there is the whole thing that history would be completely changed and the biggest problem that people have is that history would be messed up and the future would be worse, but I think the future isn't the greatest right now anyways? It might be better though and who knows we might even have a better future? Plus I don't think I could turn down living in Victorian London. I definitely would a. because its an awesome hypothetical question and imaging it makes me be happy and b. because the world would end regardless, so might as well as try to get some steampunk. I probably would end up messing up my own existence though and some how making it so I'm not born on accident though.... DX

Tl;dr: Of course I would.

Edit: though thinking about it... Knowledge in the wrong hands and used the wrong way is worse than ignorance.

Sounds like a love idea but BTC do you think we could manage it one day?

Absolutely not. First of all is the obvious danger of screwing up the future, and even if it didn't, there would be minor changes that I may regret bringing about. And whether the future is better or worse, the difference when I come back would still be horrific. Supposing I came back and my family and friends (assuming they still exist) were different. I'd be stuck being around complete strangers and eventually lose my mind. All behind a joy ride.

And let's forget about me and my problems. Let's be real here, do you honestly expect to give people new technology and disaster not ensue? People now can barely handle advanced technology.

Eh, tough call. I'd worry about the whole grandfather paradox. I might not exist anymore if I changed history, so then how could I have ever done it in the first place?

Who cares about meddling? That's no-one's indivdual responsibility, as so eloquently (and recently!) put to us by the Doctor.

No, what I'd be concerned about would be traveling to a strange place in general. No matter what survives to tell us about the place, our socieity's changed, our attitudes are different. It's a truly dangerous adventure, as there's no way to really know what to expect.

Now, with that in mind, if I did have to go back in time; I wouldn't go as anything less than a fabulously wealthy 30-year old white man with up-to-date immunizations and a can of mace.

Currently, I don't even have the mace.

I would be to afraid of eliminating my own birth, but I'd love to go back in time to observe if there was little risk involved.

how do we not know that someone hasn't already gone back in time and changed things for this future?

perhaps our world was like the steam punk age and someone went and changed it for the better... and all of us who are into steam punk still have memories from that time that never really left us for some reason...

just a thought

No, because it would mean several equally awesome things such as, Jazz, start of Metal music, 60s/70s/80s/90s stuff, etc, etc. wouldn't exactly exist.
Though going to an alternate and or parallel universe/world? Hell yes.

Ahh A wonderful piece of literature, however i would have to admit that i would go back and start a steampunk era. I know its a big risk, but the rewards are too large to pass on, But thats jsut my opinion

My theory, it's a cyclic idea, in which you'd eliminate your own presence, yet not. Because you wouldn't exist to cause the change, the change would simply not happen and you'd be stuck in an infinite loop of existing normally, going back in time and trying to force a change, and then simply not existing.

Anyway, part of the reason I wouldn't go back and introduce steam-tech is because there wouldn't be internet, music and art would be drastically different, and socially, things would likely be far more anti-GBLT than they are now.

Plus, you know, without going this far with technology, the human race would have never learned how much we can mess up one planet. That's a costly, but ever-so-valuable lesson.

I hope you have fun erasing my post style, though.
John Stalvern waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were demons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Cernel Joson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway. John was a space marine for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the spaceships and he said to dad "I want to be on the ships daddy." Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS" There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the space station base of the UAC he knew there were demons. "This is Joson" the radio crackered. "You must fight the demons!" So John gotted his palsma rifle and blew up the wall. "HE GOING TO KILL US" said the demons "I will shoot at him" said the cyberdemon and he fired the rocket missiles. John plasmaed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill. "No! I must kill the demons" he shouted The radio said "No, John. You are the demons" And then John was a zombie.
