Obviously I've been reading the introduction thread (welcome!) and I got to wondering... why is a raven like a writing desk? I've never heard the answer so now I want to know! If you have a theory or idea or are somehow in-the-know please share!

My favourite is "they both have quills", but there are a few answers to it.
Edit - Also "Poe wrote on both". ^_^

'Poe wrote on both' is my favorite of the ones I've heard. ^_^
I think I read somewhere that it didn't have any definite answer, but that leaves it open to interpertation... which is probably the point.
However, I did find this Lewis Carroll quote from this website, which kinda made me chuckle:
"Enquiries have been so often addressed to me, as to whether any answer to the Hatter's Riddle can be imagined, that I may as well put on record here what seems to me to be a fairly appropriate answer, viz: 'Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front!' This, however, is merely an afterthought; the Riddle, as originally invented, had no answer at all."

Quite right, milady-- I read that Mr. Carroll actually got rather tired of people asking the answer...
although my favorite, similar to the one you said, is "The notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes."

Haha, poor guy probably got heckled for many aspects of the things he wrote, haha. ^_^;; Such is the price those who write nonsense pay, I suppose. The fact that there are so many invented answers must have made him smile though... I know it would if it were me, lol. ^_^

well the reason for the nonsense was because he was on acid at the time so..... but he's still awesome! "The notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes." niceee oh and the official answer is that "never" was actually spelt "nevar" to make it a pun nevar=raven backwards
I actually only recently found the answer, though my friend and i were plagued by it for many a day. biggrin

No he wasn't, it wasn't even invented back then, now if you had said opium, that would of made more sense... XD
But still...I prefer to think of this 'nonsense' as his amazing imagination. ^_^

The popular answer to the riddle was: Death.
Wow.
That's quite morbid. I was quite surprised when I heard of it, but as others have stated; life is a riddle with no answer, as Mr. Charles wished it to be.

Azure Caterpillar No he wasn't, it wasn't even invented back then, now if you had said opium, that would of made more sense... XD But still...I prefer to think of this 'nonsense' as his amazing imagination. ^_^ well no you're right, not acid, but it is noted that he was on drugs of some sort. and those ideas had to be somewhere in his imagination, so perhaps being on drugs when writing it simply let him write what was already in his imagination

There's never been any proof that Carroll was on opium or anything else, it's all rumor. While reading AiW I don't get the sense that he was anyway, of course that's just my opinion.

Although there are w few logical answers to this amazing riddle, my favourite thing is to answer with a similar, riddling thought.
The most simple one is "My dear, why is a raven NOT like a writing desk?"
My personal favourite is to say something like "The same reason a ____ is like a _____" example: "The same reason a puffin is like a pencil case" whee

They both have legs! And also, the ink you've spilled all over the writing desk is the exact shade of a raven's plumage.

Ooh, I saw this a long time ago, searching for Alice websites. One is "because there's a B in both and an N in neither". but my favorite is "Because Poe wrote on both" The truth is, it wasn't supposed to have an answer, but Lewis Carrol invented one...guess he got sick of being asked, lol rolleyes
