Hollywood Sailor Sightings! Penelope Cruz Bears Striking Resemblance to... Sailor Pluto?!click here for comparisonPedro Almodovar's Los Abrazos Rotos (or better known in English as Broken Embraces) is making waves around the world, and just recently closed the New York Film Festival. An Italian fan named Federica Bernasconi was reading the November issue of Ciak, and noticed something familiar in a still from the film. More specifically, the dress that the film's star, Penelope Cruz is wearing. Sailor Pluto fans might recognize the dress too! The Guardian of Time was drawn wearing a dress that seems to have been re-created in this film almost perfectly! All Penelope is missing are those crystal earrings, and that champagne flute for an extra touch of class! One article had the nerve to say that "Cosplay Mania" is starting to infect the cinema! All fearful symmetry aside, there's another facet to this interesting choice of costume; it is rumored that costume designer Sonia Grande may be a fan of Sailor Moon. Was this a coincidence or could this have been planned? While reading the comments to this artcle i found a link that lead me to this picture: click here for image From what i can make out in the small caption in the corner its a chanel dress from the designer Lagerfeld. I couldnt find any proof of it though XD
Your thoughts?

Wowwwwww. That is indeed the exact same dress. Unfortunate, that a designer would be a fan and duplicate the dress instead of coming up with her own design. Tsk tsk
There is no way the designer can deny that it is the exact same dress. Strange how Penelope looks a tad like Setsuna already. “Guardian of the Gate of Death, I’m searching for the New World”

Hate to be the naysayer, but are we sure that it isn't a designer dress that Takeuchi-san borrowed to put on her own character? She does that a lot, you know.

Agreeing with Green here. Naoko DOEs do that. *Points to Black Lady.* And she admits she got that pose for Black Lady from a perfume ad.
<<; I'm betting the same thing with Pluto's dress... (and..all outfits in the Materials. Well..maybe not all but a lot of them.)

I remember reading in one of the Art Books that Princess Serenity's dress was based off of a wedding dress.
crying
Where is that dress now, and why have they stopped making it? *cry*

Ooo, I didn't know that. That's a good possibility, too, then. =/ If we knew when that dress was made, we could determine whether or not this is true.

Do we know what artbook that Setsuna picture was published in and when?

Well, I looked it up real quick and found that picture of Setsuna in an artbook published in 1996. If anyone could find that dress, we could solve this mystery!

Yeah I also considered that possibly she stole the dress idea, but no the dress was designed after 1996.
Also, the movie that the shot is taken from isn't coming out until 2011.
On another note, if you look at the text Chariklo posted "One article had the nerve to say that "Cosplay Mania" is starting to infect the cinema! All fearful symmetry aside, there's another facet to this interesting choice of costume; it is rumored that costume designer Sonia Grande may be a fan of Sailor Moon. Apparently its even been pointed out TO the designer. They make it sound like she became a designer sometime after sailor moon.

 That is eerie.
If the designer is a fan of Sailor Moon, it's possible that she "borrowed" the idea or even possible that she asked permission from Naoko herself! Who knows!
It looks like we've got a mystery to solve! Get the Scooby snacks!

The dress in the second photo is from another designer who likely 'designed' it before the one for the movie XD hes been designing well before the artbooks were published as well. so to solve this mystery i think we need to find out when he designed this dress rather than the woman that used it for the movieSailor Chariklo While reading the comments to this artcle i found a link that lead me to this picture: click here for imageFrom what i can make out in the small caption in the corner its a chanel dress from the designer Lagerfeld. I've noticed that she also uses a lot of references from the art nouveau movement. I was able to get a hold of a mirror that was an almost exact replica of neptunes mirror, mind you it was the manga version but it does exsist. it comes from the 1920's. although it was also popular in the 70's as well. I also see the similarities of the pictures done by alphonse mucha and the picture of king endymion queen serenity and lady pluto that nariana has in her signature. it's his picture of the zodiac lady in particular. I love her take on this beautiful art style.

That is crazy! Pretty though. Though, I wouldn't have used such harsh yellow gold for the chains and necklace.
