Huge wings shaped like lion ears, ash black parted by a river of shimmering blue. Grendel stared at them with the butterfly trapped under his paw, antennas quivering. The butterfly was almost big enough to eat. He ripped off one of the beautiful wings and chewed on it. Grimacing he spat it out again. “Yuck!”
Grendel sat up, taking his paw off the half-winged butterfly, raked his tongue between his teeth and made awful faces as he tried to get the sour taste out of his mouth. It wasn’t really sour. To be specific, it tasted more like the toe nails. Paper thin toenails that get stuck to the roof of your mouth and cause a lot of annoyance. He stuck his paw in his mouth and finally succeeded in pulling out the pieces, which he wiped off on the grass when the butterfly caught his attention again.
Now the butterfly was flopping in the grass, franticly flapping its one clumsy wing. Grendel caught it on his paw and tossed it up in the air. Then he did it again, smiling and laughing quietly to himself. The butterfly turned through the air, tumbled and crash landed on the grass again where it flopped and rolled around like a fish out of water.
Moral: Butterflies are best left uneaten.

Lulu knew she wouldn't get through to Grendel. He was so much like his father already, that she barely even tried to keep him innocent. It wasn't worth her effort. She kept to the girls's side and kept them safe from their fathers evil mind and evil ways. She was smart. She was not his to toy with, no matter how hard he thought he did. She had watched Grendel from not far away, toying with the poor creature of beauty. She felt her fur rising on end as he laughed and had fun at this game, this killing game. It sickened her. She grimmaced, watching him rip off its beautiful wing. But she smiled at his displeasure at the taste. GOOD. Perhaps he'd leave it alone now. Then, he went back to torturing the poor thing and she made a noise in the back of her throat, her purple eyes half lidded and sick. He was so cruel and so young. It was terrible. It was at these times she wished her mother was here.

Grendel knew Lulu was watching. He could feel her eyes on him, feel her girlish disgust. More important was the attention he received. When Lulu made her pained squeak, Grendel could no longer keep his back turned to her. He picked the butterfly up in his teeth, using its good wing, and flung it high into the air so that it landed near Lulu’s paws.

She hated him. She hated that Soro had any boys. They should have all been girls so he could just leave them alone. She cast an eye over to where the girls were sleeping, peaceful and sound. Safe. She turned her head back just in time to see a flash of blue come streaking at her and land at her paws. It was the poor butterfly. She wrinkled her nose, taking her paw away from it for a moment before her face softened. She brought her paw around the poor creature, her head cocking. She shook her head, her face stiffening. She then took a swing and smacked the bug into the ground soundly with her paw. Quick and clean and dead. No playing. No torture. She couldn't deal with that. A small smile tempted to crawl on her face, but she dared not. She simply swept the remains of the smushed bug to the side and lay down again.

Grendel’s eyes popped. He rushed to the butterfly’s side with the urgency of a dear friend but none of the heart. “Hey! W-what are you doing?!”
He stared at the butterfly’s unmoving remains, the pieces of his broken toy. His ears slid back. “Aww Lesa, you weren’t supposed to kill it. You were just supposed to get scared.”
He used the name Lesa because it was the name his father used and because it was the only name he knew. He wasn’t sure where she came from either. When he asked his father about it, Soro told him that Lesa belonged to him just like Lorelei, his mother. Maybe one day he could have a female of his own.

Lulu felt bad for killing it but what could she do, sit and watch the cub slowly kill it. She couldn't. She had a sense of humanity, and couldn't. She knew that it was dead and it was better off that way. She looked to grendel and blinked.
"It was going to die anyways. What is the difference between a few more moments of life." She said simply, looking at him sternly. There it was, that horrid name. Lesa. She hated it. Her name was Lulu. It was LULU. She sighed at his words.
"It was only a butterfly Grendel... if you want to scare me... use something scary..." she said, with a smile. She couldn't help but be friendly to him at this point. "That was a pretty butterfly... next time try a snake or a scorpion!" She said with a wink.

“Cause I wasn’t done playing with it,” Grendel muttered, looking bitter and sullen. His father was right. Girls always ruined everything.
Like he could even find scorpions around here. His father said they all lived in the desert. Grendel wanted to see a real scorpion. He could care less about snakes. He snorted, “Yeah right, you just want me to get bit. Since you ruined my fun we should play a new game instead.”

Lulu sighed.. Games always meant she had to listen to him... great. She stood up slowly, her purple eyes half lidded again. She stood at attention, waiting for his first commands. She hated it here. She hated that she didn't know her little brother anymore. Or her parents either. She lifted her chin and waitied for him to give her 'orders'.

Grendel smiled, happy to see Lulu following orders. Father always told him that a woman’s place is under a male. Of course, he still felt sore with her for killing his toy. She needed to be taught a lesson.
“We’re going to play hunter and hunted. I’m the hunter and you’re the hunted.” He poked her with his paw. “You can be a zebra, cause you’re black and white. Go wait in the tall grass behind the dens. While you’re waiting you gotta chew on daisies and stuff to make it more realistic. Then… when you least expect it… I’m gonna pounce on you, rawr!” He rose up on his hind legs and waved his paws in the air.

Lulu sighed again, at least he wasn't going to demand much out of her at that moment. She stood up and walked back to the dens, into the tall grass. No problem with getting away from everyone else. She sat down in the grass and was sure as hell not going to eat it. She pushed the tufts around with her paws, crouching down so she was staring at the strands. Let him do what he wants... She thought, rolling her eyes. She then silently waited for her attacker.

Minutes passed. Eventually something shuffled in the grass. The air behind the dens was calm and still and blew no scents toward Lulu’s nose. At first it seemed the noise might be Grendel, but as the minutes ticked by the shuffling lost its significance. Maybe it was just a mouse.
Grendel, the mighty hunter, creeps through the grass. He is the Night. He is the Shadow. He is… a master of disguise!
The Prey suspects nothing. As he draws ever closer she feels a cold chill running down her spine. Something… evil… approaches. She doesn’t know… what it is… or where… it is coming from. Her heart pounds with fear. She tries to run… but… the hunter’s very presence causes her legs to turn to stone. Her voice catches in her throat. She can’t even… scream!
The hunter is even closer now. Closer… closer… dun-dun… dun-dun… dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-DUNDUNDUNDUNDUN!
Suddenly a dark shape wearing a skull flew from the grass and landed on Lulu’s back. Tiny black claws pierced her shoulders and drew blood. He was wearing one of the skulls from his father’s den, a juvinile herbivore skull that rattled around and fit him poorly. When he landed on her back the skull shifted and obscured his view but he could feel his way enough to bite into the back of her neck.

Lulu was getting horridly bored. She started to get irriated and decided to lay down until he came. She flicked the heads off a few flowers, watching them fling across the ground. She sighed, She ignored the sounds of the grass moving. She ignored everything really. She was going to get up and find him in a short amount of time when suddenly, she felt someone on her back and she yowled. Just like Soro had leapt upon her mother, lulu felt her back burn with his claws. She squealed, spinning to get him off her.

Grendel’s laughter slashed the air. Lulu bucked hard and sent him flying. He thought himself superior to her as a male but overlooked their difference in size. Flying, tumbling through the air, he bounced and rolled as he hit the ground, leaving the skull behind. For a moment he lay still. Breathing heavily, trying to gain his bearings. Tears stung his eyes. He stumbled up clumsy, sniffling and gulping back tears. Except for a few minor bruises he wasn’t badly injured.

Lulu turned to glare at the boy with her own stinging eyes. "Grendel... that wasn't appreciated!" She said, wrinkling up her nose and trying to get to her back to clean it. She coudlnt reach it and turned to look back at him, catching the look in his eyes. She paused, her face softening. "Grendel? Are you okay?"

Grendel glared at her with eyes on fire. He looked most like his father when he was angry. He rubbed his eyes with the back of his paw and took a deep breath. He rose silently and walked up to Lulu. When they stood face to face he struck her across the cheek as hard as he could. “You cheated! You were supposed to die!”
