I've come across people saying "G-d" or "G*d" a lot. I'm wondering two things: who exactly does this and why? Does anyone know? It's rather interesting, because I only recall seeing it this year.

I think it's born out of the same mindset that prevented Jews from uttering the word YHWH - respect for the name.

I agree with the above post. It's been around for much longer than a year.

At my school it doesnt mean god, it means God-Damn, like the curse, some people (Christians) dont like saying it so they say G-D...

So apologies if I'm wrong, but I've heard that it's both out of respect for the name and to protect againts anyone defiling or erasing it because it's wrong to erase His name, but it's not wrong if you didn't write it out in the first place.

Really? Interesting. This is the first year that I've noticed it.

XD
Wow, this is SUCH contradiction WHICH I will explain.

: Yes...I have noticed this flying around lately.
Long ago, it was only once in a blue moon that I saw something like this.
However, it has been dramatically increasing lately.
Not sure why.

It is silly when people, especially Christians, think they need to censor a name of someone or something.
Why does a Christian have to censor the name of the creator he/she believes in?

Censorship just PLAINLY pisses me off the most considering things don't NEED to be censored and shouldn't be censored. Censoring has caused the worse political fights and bullshits since day one.

Continuing, I find that if you need to say G*d instead of God, then there is a serious problem.
You don't hear me saying B*g B*ng because I think that actually saying such a thing might " offend " someone.
Stop with this retarded censoring and let me hear B*ddha and not Buddha.
If Gos existed, he would RATHER want to hear you say his name, not some bleep noise.

I know that a couple of Jewish kids in my class write G-d, and they explained that if you wrote "God" on a piece of paper and then threw it away, it's as if you're rejecting God or something.

So yeah. They censor it out of respect.

Out of the respect of a word, really. I mean, I'm not too sure on how religious people think so I can't say. However, the case you listed is not always the problem. There is also the internet and other public places.

It's part of Judaism.
You can't defile the name of God. You can prevent that by not ever actually writing "God".
Just like how they substitute HaShem in place of His real name.

(EDIT: This part has nothing to do with what I quoted. I was refering to your earlier point. Just thought I should clarify that.)
It has nothing to do with not offending people.

I never really could understand defacing someone with a simple gesture as such so it is complicated. I understand that people do it out of respect but I don't see how it is sensible.
