ill tell u why cuz ppl are delusional. they think that Metallica was steering away from their old stuff and came up with something new. So all in all they hate change but obviously change is great. If they didnt like then they arent real fans, cuz a real fan would have gave the change a chance and loved it

Same thing I thought. I mean really not every song of Metallica's is going to sound like Enter Sandman which is the Metllica song everyone likes.

Personally, it's a great album but not their best. And not everyone thinks it's bad, it's just not the greatest album they came out with. I think the Black album, Kill 'em all, and Ride the Lightening are among their best.

I think that it's a decent album, but I think Metallica shouldn't have made it. It didn't live up to the high standard I put out for one of my all time favorite metal bands.

I'll explain it in a aesthetic way. People "don't like" St. Anger because of the experimentation they did on the album not to mention how long it took to complete. In Some Kind of Monster during like the middle of the recording James checks into rehab for alcoholism leaving the band on kind of a cliffhanger not knowing if Metallica would survive as a band or even release the album. Another thing is that they choose to be completely sober for the entire recording of the album which threw fans off because of the fact that the album was more of a collaboration rather than like the old days where Lars writes his drum riffs, Kirk writes his solos, James his lyrics/vocals, and Jason his bass lines. On St, Anger they each gave the others feedback about what they would write to sort of "iron out" the rough edges which is something Metallica hadn't done up to that point. Not to mention the fact that there was no rivalry between Lars and James for control over the band like in the old days which is what fans where used to. The album basically blindsided all their fans in such an impactful way that the fans didn't know how to react to it. Also the other thing was that Robert was brought in to fill Jason's shoes but this time they didn't treat him like a n00b like they did when they first brought in Jason when Cliff died (R.I.P). There was absolutely no tension on the record, but rather an uneasy calm which really disappointed the fans. Lastly was the dramatic change in sound compared to albums like Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets. They choose to experiment with more styles and also in the movie Kirk brought up the subject of solos where not each song had to have a solo in it which was their mentality in the past. Also compared to some of the older songs, the songs on St. Anger where a bit slower and moderately paced than something like Jump in The Fire or Battery. But at the heart of it all they took a risk in exposing more of their own feelings and souls on the album rather than just fast paced, in your face metal which fans had come to expect of them. For example if you were to do a progression line graph of Metallica from Kill 'Em All up to Load the line would have been relatively steady until Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger which showed drastic changes in their recording, vocal styling, writing approach as well as delivery. It's because of those reasons people had a hard time and still have a hard time accepting the fact that in their eyes, Metallica could write a piece of trash like St. Anger.
