User ImageName: B'shir (formerly Bashir)
Age: 21
Gender: male
Sexual Orientation: heterosexual
Craft: none
Rank: wingleader

Appearance: Although he and his family have been residents of High Reaches for several generations, Bashir's Igen heritage is plainly written in his face - and the rest of him. His hair is a very dark brown that is nearly black and tends to look a little reddish in certain kinds of light and tends to curl when short or wet, and his eyes are an even darker shade of brown that look nearly black in nearly all lights. He has a long, slightly aquiline nose over a reasonably well-formed mouth, though his lips are perhaps a little thin and not given much to smiling. His cheekbones are high but not overly prominent. Naturally, his skin is a golden brown that seems at odds with High Reaches climate. In terms of physique, he is not particularly tall - only about five feet ten inches - but he's got some decent muscles on him from training rigorously under his father and grandfather's critical eyes.

Personality: B'shir is a very driven, serious young man. His first priority is Impressing a dragon. His family would prefer that he Impress a bronze, but he would be happy with any dragon that chose him. The fact that he is driven translates unflatteringly into stubbornness. Once he sets his mind on something, very few things can sway him from his path, even when he's wrong, he will cling to an idea until he is forced to abandon it. He's much the same with people: once he decides how he feels about a person, it's going to be incredibly difficult to change his opinion. Fortunately, he isn't given to making snap decisions, and so a bad first impression will not ruin his view of another person for all time.

And, although he is serious much of the time, B'shir does have a dry sense of humor that occasionally comes out when he's relaxing with friends. Those who are less familiar with him may not realize this, though, because he has a very flat affect and doesn't smile when he cracks jokes or when he's amused. B'shir is most comfortable around his family and friends, who are usually male. Raised by a sexist family, B'shir's opinion of females is somewhat low, even those who manage to Impress gold dragons, and so he's not likely to befriend any female who isn't extraordinary in some way, and really it had better be more than one. Women are to be protected and sheltered. Aside from his hangups with women, B'shir is actually outgoing and likes people.

B'shir is a firm believer in the benefits of rank and seniority. He will not, however, follow orders blindly. If he thinks the orders are stupid he has an unfortunate habit of questioning them. Not arguing, per se, but questioning. It's a fine point that he makes on a fairly regular basis because he is quick-witted and an independent thinker. He just happens to believe that authority should be obeyed when it's correct and that a person who puts in the time deserves the respect that comes with it, working on the assumption he will be treated with similar respect if he ever attains any sort of rank or authority.

When it comes to taking risks, B'shir doesn't. Not really. He's not afraid of anything High Reaches Weyr can throw at him, though he has a healthy respect for the fouler-tempered dragons. Growing up with Rath made it easier for him to deal with other dragons. He is not someone who can be dared to do stupid things, though he won't rat out others who do them unless there's a possibility people or dragons will be hurt in the process. He doesn't like to see anything in pain, though he's fine slaughtering beasts as needed and butchering them. He just doesn't like to see them suffer.

Other: B'shir is literate and already knows the rudiments of riding dragons and caring for them.

B'shir spends his mornings training with his grandfather, A'ram, and his dragon, Rath. Mostly he's not assigned chores during this time of day, getting them done either in the afternoons or before he goes to train.

B'shir's face is not expressive. He can make expressions, but because he has to think about it, they tend to come a fraction too late and they rarely look convincing. Most of the time he doesn't bother, and does most of his emoting with his voice.

B'shir has returned from Ghenza at this point and has recently been promoted to the position of wingleader.

User ImageBashir's grandfather left his family in Igen Hold for reasons he won't explain to anyone (though rumor has it there was a lover's quarrel involved), traveling North to the High Reaches, a place as distant and alien as he could be. He was Searched by a High Reaches dragonrider. At his fourth hatching he Impressed brown Rath and became A'ram. Following the traditions of family-oriented Igen, A'ram acknowledged the son he had with a failed candidate who decided to stay on at the Weyr, Bashir's father. Musil, Bashir's father, failed to Impress a dragon, though he stood at every hatching that occurred between the time he turned thirteen and the time he turned twenty one. When it became obvious he wouldn't Impress he turned his attention to making a family. To his disappointment, he had two daughters before he finally had a son, Bashir.

With the hopes of his family resting on him to Impress, Bashir was raised with the idea that he had to become a dragonrider. Nothing less would be satisfactory or acceptable. When he was young this was fine because it meant he got to spend a great deal of time with his grandfather and Rath, but as he got older there was more pressure on him to excel. His grandfather made him practice flying on Wereth and executing flight drills. By the time he was fourteen he knew as much about being a dragonrider as a weyrling who had been training for a turn. He just didn't have a dragon yet.

He continued to fail to Impress turn after turn, his family began to make it clear how very not okay it was that he hadn't Impressed. Rather than bowing to the pressure, he worked harder. Bashir got into the business of looking out for newly Searched candidates when he was sixteen, much to his family's ire. They don't think he ought to be helping others to Impress when he had yet to do so. It became a source of familial tension and the cause of Bashir finally deciding to move into candidate's quarters, rather than living with his father. Since then, he and his family have been at odds but he hasn't given up training, but only because he likes Rath and the feeling is mutual.

When he Impressed Sakneth in his twentieth turn, B'shir was the family's golden boy once more and it became imperative that he and Sakneth attend practice sessions with A'ram and Rath, even though the bronze and the brown disliked each other heartily. When Sakneth was a little over six months old plague broke out at High Reaches and so the entire clutch was sent to another Weyr, isolated Ghenza, where B'shir works as a laborer in farmcraft to earn his keep. Sakneth hates it there.

Sakneth is inspired by the song "Nice Guys Finish Last" by Cobra Starship and colored by Chibi Sheepcat.
Sakneth? He's a typical bronze. Almost.

On the matter of physical stature, he's just as standard. If he's any bigger than the others, it's so slight that most people won't note the difference. The size of his ego is where he unmistakably surpasses most of his peers. If there's one thing that drives him, it's his pride. He's got more than enough to sustain him and an abundance of leftovers to share with his rider, who will quickly be set straight if he ever dares doubt either of them.

Sakneth is bronze with a silver tongue. Within seconds of meeting them, he can ordinarily tell what someone wants to hear and be on their good side if he really aims for it. That isn't to say he doesn't think before he opens his big mouth; he just makes snap decisions, and instinctively brilliant ones. The full extent of his manipulative prowess is known only by his rider and those few who see through his facade. Sakneth knows they're great, so what anyone else thinks doesn't matter to him. His goal is to have whatever he wants, not work on his public image. In his not-so-humble opinion, there's nothing wrong with this behavior. All he's doing is playing the game of life.

Once he's reviewed another dragon enough to judge them, that opinion is set in stone and carving in something new is a wearisome task indeed. Sounds harsh? Good. He knows nice guys finish last. Believe it or not, Sakneth fancies himself quite the lady-killer. Not many women do, however. He treats them like a game to be bested, and seems convinced he's got the rule book and all the cheat codes memorized. They want a bad boy, he'll tell his rider, and go so far as to encourage him to defile them with his words. Never his fists. Sakneth hates seeing anything in pain, but he doesn't understand the emotion called sympathy and so ignores it quite well. (All the while, he's drawn to people who do, and he doesn't know why that is. Could there be a good dragon underneath it all?)

Other males are either his apprentices, underlings or enemies. There is no in between. They'll get along until the first sign they might be trying to do something Sakneth doesn't like. Male or female, anyone who questions his authority will be subject to a temper tantrum. (Except golds, of course. Hello, ladies. You're looking so lovely today! How may he help you?) Just because he doesn't care about your opinion does not mean you can tell him what to do. If he feels like it, then he will do so then and only then. He very much despises being told to do things by equal and lesser colors.

Yes, that's right. Lesser colors. He's a bronze, so you browns, blues and greens learn your place on the food chain. It's below him, in case you're not smart enough to figure that out. He can't really blame you considering you're, you know... you. The one part of his reputation he does care about is maintaining an alpha male image, especially when it comes to that accursed Teharth. When it comes time for a queen to rise, he will chase her and he will catch her and no one will say otherwise! And if he needs to fly a green just to prove he's top dog, then he will. That silly brown needs to be reminded at every given turn who the big man on campus is.

Why Bashir?
Life is a b***h, Bashir. And so is Sakneth, so you best be ready.

Bashir might not want Sakneth as his dragon, but that’s just too sharding bad, because he’s picked him so he doesn’t have a choice. His intention is not to bully the young man, however. He has legit reasons for his decision. First off, he knows a person like Bashir will just make Teharth angry. How funny!

He likes Bashir’s view on women quite a bit. The boy needs some work there, but nothing a little tough love can’t fix. His has the potential to be what Sakneth wants him to be, and he’ll do his best to make that dream a reality.

Bashir believes in ranks, but not enough to follow orders like a deadglow. He’ll need that with a bronze like Sakneth, who doesn’t think any of the other bronzes have any right to tell him what to do. And, although it didn’t necessarily influence his choice, Sakneth doesn’t mind his family. Boy could learn a thing or two from a certain someone in this bronze’s opinion!

They may not be the best of friends, but together, they will be close to unstoppable.

Dragonriders of Pern Shop
There was a feeling of appreciation and warmth in the air, especially for those who knew Rafferty. The Weyrleader smiled from where he was watching, shaking his head. All he could think was: Unbelievable. This was a clutch of dreams, he decided. But soon, it would seem more like one of nightmares.

The Seaside Egg gave a jerk. Then another. After the third, the shell broke open and a bronze stumbled out, screeching at the top of his lungs. Hissing, snarling and snapping, he turned to look at the Sunset Egg. Outraged by the mere sight of it, he whipped his tail around and sent his unhatched clutchmate in a chaotic roll toward the male candidates. The Blinding Red Egg narrowly avoided being crushed, forced off to the side.

D'astel's eyes went wide. That strong already?!

This didn't look good at all.

Dragonriders of Pern Shop
The bronze thumped his tail against the ground, screeching again. Some of the more skitish adult dragons even backed up, and many people covered their ears the sound was so horrible. The other two eggs had been disturbed, but had not moved, worrying many, and among those numbers the Weyrwoman. Had...

No, she couldn't think things like that. If there was someone to be worried for, it was the candidates, not the dragons.

Hearing Jaylin, Sakneth turned toward him, hissing viciously. Perhaps he'd have made a move to go after the boy, if not for another catching his eye. What did that one think he was doing?! Screaming for all to hear yet again, the bronze ran right into Panata, dragging his claws up the boys side.

How dare he! How DARE he!

Princess_Feylin
Bashir had watched the Impressions up until this point with a feeling of contentedness. Although he would have loved to Impress any of the dragons that had hatched so far, he was content to wait until the right one was born. He could imagine A'ram didn't share his sentiments, but when he was on the sands he didn't have to think about his grandfather. His grandfather couldn't make the dragons choose him any more than Bashir could. He stood even less of a chance of doing so, in fact.

However, when the more violent dragonets hatched Bashir became instantly wary. He'd heard speculation that there would be violence at this hatching, but he'd hoped that the rumors would be discredited. He didn't want anyone to be seriously hurt. Some injuries were always common, but that one pair seemed completely out of control. Especially that bronze! Bashir wondered if Dorath would step in and chastise her son. When she didn't do so immediately, Bashir moved toward Panata - cautiously - to make sure the young man was all right.

To Jaylin he muttered, "You're not too bright, are you?"

Marushii
Jaylin glanced at Bashir, frowning. "What the Shards else am I supposed to do, stand around and wait? At least I'm doing something while doing it!" He'd like to think he was distracting the enraged Bronze to allow the other Candidates to check in on the one that was slashed.

Or at least make the dragon stop and think. Knowing Jaylin's luck, he probably made the situation even worse. At least he was ready to run.

Princess_Feylin
"He'll either find his bondmate or he won't. If we upset him, the chances that he won't increase a great deal," Bashir replied in a voice that was surprisingly soft and calm, considering the situation. "Just a thought."

That sort of attitude wasn't going to win him any friends, but from Bashir's point of view, Jaylin was simply agitating the bronze dragonet, and it hardly needed that. It was obviously agitated enough without the assistance. Not to mention.

Marushii
"Oh? And will he claw through the Candidates one by one until he tires and picks from those still standing?" Jaylin asked scornfully, "Just because someone just so happens to be stronger than everyone else doesn't mean they have to rub it in everyone's faces."

He shook his head and ran his hand through his hair. "I've seen this played again and again in the wrong crowd of the 'brats. Whether he does or doesn't... Tch! Anyone can see that he's strong. Hitting an egg and attacking a Candidate doesn't prove much. I don't get what he has to prove or what's goin' on between him and the egg," he nodded towards the sunset egg, then shrugged. "Maybe if I knew more I'd be more forgiving. But until then..."

Dragonriders of Pern Shop
Perhaps the most impatient of adult dragons present was the great Kentoth himself. This son was not his, not really. But the public thought he was, and to see him behave this way... He wasn't sure how to feel. Should he be proud "his" offspring could be so strong and intimidating so early on, or disgusted with this mess?

Let him go, D'astel told his dragon. He felt their pain, both physical and emotional, but every candidate knew the risk when they stepped out onto the sands.

That risk just doubled. The Sunset Egg had finally had enough. The entrance of the brown was no more or less fierce than the bronze. He kicked his shell away, snarling, seeking out someone, but not His. Not yet.

There!

One loud cry and a good twenty plus feet of running, the brown had reached the bronze and tackled him without reserve. The pair broke out into a full blown fight, and no one was spared from the sounds unless they were completely deaf.

It was then the first bronze emerged fully from his shell. The once relaxed creature looked annoyed, if not angry, standing in front of the queen egg with a protective determination. Behind him, the Blinding Red Egg began to rock.

Princess_Feylin
"He probably won't, if no one gets in his way. And if he does, who would want to volunteer to be victimized?" Bashir kept his tone reasonable. He also kept his eyes trained on the bronze, and not on Jaylin. Jaylin might be annoyed at him, but he was also a lot less likely to do him physical harm than the bronze was.

"It's also not our role to teach the dragonets the error of their ways. They'll discover that soon enough." Bashir had been standing at hatchings for about six turns. He, too, knew how badly they could play out. He refrained from mentioning it mostly because he didn't care to divert enough of his attention from the bronze's movements to have a full-on argument with Jaylin.

"Do whatever you want. It's your hide. But I think now would be a very bad time to intervene." The last part was directed toward Dashias, whose movement toward the bronze he'd just noticed.

Naree
Dashias ignored the girl who tried to grab at him. He nodded an acknowledgement to Bashir and stopped when the brown from the sunset egg finally hatched and launched himself at his bigger bronze clutchmate. If the two dragonets focused on each other and not finding theirs, then they would both go between.

Not good.

He stayed still, wondering if Dorath would bring her children under control. It was not his place as a mere human to stop sharp teeth and talons from attacking each other. Really, the girl was overreacting in his mind. Dashias moved further away and behind the trio. Should he call out, like a parent reprimending his child or should he sit and wait?

"Hey there! Stop it!" It slipped off his tongue and out before he could stiop himself. So this would be his fate, eh? Harper instincts took over. He took a firm stance, feet planted on either side and let his voice broadcast. At least, if he got injured it would give the two bronzes and the brown a chance to draw their attention somewhere else and Impress. "What do you think you are doing? Fighting like that? Don't you know you need to go find yours out there... How would he feel if you got injured and couldn't go to him."

His legs shook with fright and with the blind courage of stupidity. Dashias remembered what the Candidate Master had told them about standing still, not doing anything to upset the Hatchlings. But honestly, how could anyone just stand there and let this happen?

Princess_Feylin
"You're right," Bashir agreed with Jaylin. "It is stupid. I've never seen dragonets do this."

And then his attention was momentarily diverted. In his mind, Bashir called Dashias all sorts of nasty names, but what he actually did was sigh. The dragonets' attention wasn't on him, and as long as he skirted their brawl, he'd probably be all right. Dashias, however, had never been at a hatching, and had probably never seen any of the pandemonium that could break forth. He looked very much like he was tempted to do something stupid, and Bashir would be disappointed if that happened. He liked Dashias.
-----

A'ram was going to kill his grandson. If one of the dragons didn't do it for him.

Dragonriders of Pern Shop
The battling dragons seemed more in a rush to Impress than the heroic bronze shielding the gold from harm. Their struggle continued, and if anything, got more violent. Splotches of greens dragons blood joined the red from the humans who had been injured in the sands, and neither showed signs of stopping.

The fight moved toward Dashias, and the raging bronze was knocked into him by his opponent. With a screech (yes, another!), he dug his claws into the boy and then pushed himself away, charging for the brown again. He hit him head on, sending him flying back. Back toward the clutch.

The Tye Dye Egg shook once, twice, then a green appeared with a loud cry. Her sound was not of fear or anger, but perhaps it was of warning. She looked around, then joined the more mild mannered of the bronzes in front of her queen.

The rivals neared the clutch, only to find themselves temporarily distracted from one another. The other bronze and the green screamed at them, shouting to go find theirs, or at least move away from the gold egg.

Off into the distance, a roar, that of an adult, rang out and each hatchling froze. It was scary. But whose was it?

Princess_Feylin
Bashir swore aloud now, and colorfully, as he whirled around to see to Dashias. He knew he should have put himself between the ex-harper and the dragonets. It had been his first inclination, and he'd decided against it. At this point, the dragonets had forced his hand. He wanted to Impress badly, but there would be other hatchings, and he felt more strongly obliged to make sure that his friend was all right.

"Dashias, you're an idiot," he said good-naturedly. "Please tell me you're an idiot that's going to be all right, though."

A dragon's furious cry made his blood run cold and every instinct he had told him that he was in the presence of many large carnivores.

Dragonriders of Pern Shop
When the echo of the roar faded away, so did the caution that it had prompted. The bronze and brown were at it again, but this time, not for long. From over the Weyrbowl appeared a dragon of brown color. D'astel squinted his eyes, then broke into a fit of laughter. It sounded so inappropriate and made those around him stare, but only because they didn't know what he did.

Halteth! Of all dragons!

Not alone, either, he noted, and laughed harder. Talis was on her bonded's back, observing the hatching from up above with disapproving eyes. The crowd made all sorts of sounds, all at once. Whispers, shouts, cheers of approval, screams of the exact opposite.

"WHAT IS THAT GIRL DOING?!" K'ban shouted over all of them. It was bad enough there was a female brownrider at all, but who was she to invade on a hatching like this?!

Halteth was not to be detered by any of them. GO! shouted the brown, staring down at the two who had been fighting as if he'd swoop down and eat them alive if they disobeyed. He need not repeat himself.

The bronze gave a final snarl at the brown then looked to what was left of the boys.

BASHIR! COME! I WILL NOT WAIT ANY LONGER FOR YOU! STEP UP AND CLAIM YOUR SAKNETH! NOW!

Confrontation

The healers in the infirmary had given B'shir a polite reminder that he was going through oil very quickly, and pointed out that it really wasn't necessary to oil a dragon all over whenever he complained of itchiness. B'shir nodded politely and thought somewhat uncharitably that they didn't have to listen to Sakneth complaining inside their skulls if he just tried to oil the itchy patch. Few, if any, of them had probably ever had a dragon speak to them directly. They thought he was letting his dragon push him around. Maybe he was. He really had no choice but to love Sakneth, but that didn't mean he had to like him all the time.

When they left the infirmary Sakneth began to complain that he was hungry. B'shir sighed and told him that he could eat at dinner time, like everyone else, but that was the wrong tactic to take with Sakneth. The bronze abruptly stopped walking and sat back on his haunches so that he could look B'shir in the eye. His eyes were orange. B'shir met his dragon's gaze unflinchingly and steeled his will. What followed wasn't particularly pleasant for either of the pair, as Sakneth tried to assert his perceived authority over B'shir, and B'shir simply dug his heels in, metaphorically speaking.

I'm not Rath! Sakneth howled when it became apparent that he had chosen a human more stubborn than he was, who would not give in when he issued ultimatums. The bronze actually made an eerie noise of unhappiness at this discovery. He is only an ancient brown who's to stupid to be anything but well-behaved.

B'shir strove not to flinch physically or mentally. Sakneth had a point. B'shir had been expecting his dragon to behave like Rath, even after being confronted with undeniable evidence that Sakneth was a very different dragon. He forced himself to maintain his stony demeanor as he asked in a low voice, "Do you regret your choice in me?"

Sakneth, completely locked out of B'shir's mind for a moment by a force of will that was exhausting the young human, panicked. His eyes whirled a miserable shade of grey. Like B'shir, he had no choice but to love his bondmate, but the human infuriated him much of the time with his mildness. He was bonded to a great dragon - Sakneth - and he acted like he would have been happier with a well-behaved green. It really hurt Sakneth's feelings.

Fluttering nearby, Shibra was equally distressed, though she couldn't do much more than bombard B'shir with her fear and panic. She didn't like that she was unable to touch his mind and knew better than to look to Sakneth for reassurance. The bronze dragonet simply wasn't good at that sort of thing, and he was far too upset to be any help, even if he was.

No, Sakneth said. I don't regret you. Please let me into your mind again. Let me see what you're thinking.

It was incredibly difficult for B'shir to continue to block Sakneth, who was flinging himself at the barriers B'shir had constructed. If he hadn't so much experience with Rath, he wouldn't have been able to do it at all, but that was the lesser difficulty. The greater difficulty was that he hated to cause Sakneth and Shibra to suffer like this, but it was the only way he could see to make his dragon understand that he would not be bullied. It might even make a lasting impression, though B'shir doubted it. Dragon memories were what they were.

"All right," he answered, incredibly glad to drop the shields he'd erected. It wasn't natural for a dragonrider to separate his mind from his dragon's, and thus it wasn't easy either. Sakneth's awareness filled his mind and for a moment B'shir was overwhelmed with the onslaught of his dragon's distress and contrition. Neither would last long, particularly not with B'shir reassuring him that he wouldn't rather have Rath as his bondmate, or any other dragon in the Weyr. At the same time he was sending feelings of love and warmth to Shibra, trying to calm her as she clung like a limpet to his collar.

I really am hungry, Sakneth said with uncharacteristic meekness.

"Then let's find you something to eat."

Six Month Update

Although B'shir his by no means a feminist, having a dragon who is so clearly misogynistic has actually made him more accepting of females, as he feels he must compensate for his dragon's sometimes vicious thoughts on the subject of females and their uses. Even though no one else is privy to his dragon's thoughts, B'shir still feels obligated to atone for them. It also annoys Sakneth when B'shir shows any sort of preference to a female that he doesn't approve of.

B'shir has come to accept that Sakneth is correct about their position in the Weyr because of the dragon's bronze hide. He doesn't flinch from authority positions, like when their lessons are broken into smaller groups to practice formation drills. He's learned to extend his confidence in his own abilities into confidence as a leader at need, though he is still an unimaginative leader and doesn't perform as well when asked to deal with unexpected scenarios. His solution, of course, is to practice harder and spend a lot of time trying unsuccessfully to force himself to be creative. It almost goes without saying that B'shir and Sakneth attend every lesson: B'shir feels duty-bound to do so.

Sakneth remains a misogynist, but as he's grown older he's come to the conclusion that there is at least one purpose for females: making babies. Thus, he has very little respect for green dragons in particular, however he only speaks out in criticism when some other criticism that isn't based on their color is warranted. In other words, B'shir has convinced him that it's not in his best interest to cut greens down to size. Now he voices his harsh, anti-green remarks to B'shir only.

Sakneth approves of his rider's acceptance of their superiority, even though he doesn't feel B'shir exercises it nearly enough. He's decided that baby steps are good enough for now, and makes every effort to be exemplary in lessons to cover up for his rider's shortcomings. When broken up for drills, Sakneth is commanding and confident even when he's one hundred percent mistaken. His excuse is that the people following him should have questioned anything they thought was a bad decision, though he hates to have his ideas brought into question. It almost goes without saying that B'shir and Sakneth attend every lesson: Sakneth likes to show off.

Something interesting about the way drills go for them is that B'shir, who is not naturally good with people, is able to take advantage of Sakneth's silver tongue and deliver the compliments Sakneth might have said if he chose to lead through encouraging. Both he and Sakneth are capable of being highly critical, but it's fallen to Sakneth to play the bad cop, as it were, and he's all right with that because he feels anyone can make up a compliment, but it takes a real man who's not afraid of anything to tell people things they don't want to hear. Sometimes B'shir has to actually shut his dragon up mentally to keep him from being too critical, though these occurrences are growing less common as Sakneth is learning to tell for himself when he should stop.

Although it would seem to an outsider that B'shir and Sakneth have learned to work together, the fact of the matter is that it remains a power struggle. B'shir doesn't trust his dragon not to do something unforgivable and Sakneth doesn't trust B'shir not to do something stupid. Most of the time B'shir is able to impose his will over Sakneth's, but there are occasions where B'shir loses that struggle. Both rider and dragon are aware, however, that it would look bad for both of them if they were seen to be struggling for dominance, and so no matter who wins the other goes along with it until they can assert their own dominance once more, or in another area.
