Get to know your public... that was what Luci had said at that first banquet and while Sharath only knew she was displeased with the Weyrwoman because of that night, Amelia remembered that day in vivid detail. It was the moments where her life had changed tracks completely and irrevocably. Going from a Journeyman Excavator spending her days in the tunnels of the Weyr to becoming an up-coming official of the Weyr was... stunning. Not only did people actually say hello on a regular basis, they seemed to tense up on occasion when she approached... It bothered her, sometimes, and Sharath would coil about the future Weyrwoman as best she could.

Sharath... Sharath too was a confusing mishmash of delight and frustration. On one hand, the little gold was a caring, bold and honest creature... on the other hand she was so very prone to outbursts of superiority and selfishness that it made Amelia's head spin. Never had she thought she would Impress a dragon - that was for the Candidates - and now, well now she was never without company and never without a friend nearby.

She smiled as she sat with Sharath, leaning back against the young gold as they both perched on one of the high outcrops above the Weyrbowl and soaked in the sun and watched the wings wheel about over head. Ever since J'lin had shown her to properly oil Sharath's hide, Amelia was quite diligent in keeping her lifemate's hide well taken care of. As a result, her hide often shone a rich, buttery gold that the dragonet seemed to take quite a bit of pride in. Nobody would miss her or mistake her importance if her colours flashed so beautifully.

"Nn... Sharath, do you suppose anyone's upset that I Impressed you?" Amelia asked thoughtfully, "I'm not exactly anyone important and people only began saying hello and... acting with deference when you came to me. You're so important, you're a gold after all, and I can't help but wonder what would have happened if I hadn't gone to the Hatching."

Sharath shifted, rumbling with concern and disapproval, If they are upset, they are ignorant and beneath your notice, Mine. I do not know if they are being respectful just because of me... they should not. You are a good person, Amelia, and strong. If they do not see that, they are blind as well as ignorant. I am important, yes, but Mine is just as important. She curled her tail around the other's feet, laying it across her lower legs and ruffled her wings, If you had not been there, Mine, I would not have chosen another. There is no second-best for me....

It went without saying that Sharath would have gone Between had Amelia not been there and the excavator shivered at that, unwilling to think of the other perishing. It wasn't that she was a gold, it was her strength of person that Amelia admired even as she was frustrated with it - now that Sharath was with her, it was growing hard to imagine what it would be like to be without.

Banishing the dark thoughts and pensive expression, Amelia as up and cuddled Sharath's head in her lap, stroking the eyeridges and headknobs. "You're a confident one, Sharath. I think we'll go places - I rather doubt you'll allow anything less." Amusement danced in her voice and Sharath nodded, eyes whirling beautiful hues of blue and green.

"You know," B'shir remarked to Sakneth as they made their way to the infirmary, "You really don't need to be oiled as often as you have been. You're not growing that fast."

The bronze, who had been growing quickly, turned to look at his bondmate with an affronted gaze. Just because he liked to be oiled right before bed and just after waking up didn't mean he was excessive. His hide was bronze. He was meant to shine and gleam, and being oiled frequently helped him to do that. He would have oiled his own hide if he could, but he couldn't, and it seemed to him a small thing to ask of his bondmate. B'shir was just being perverse.

It doesn't take a lot of time to get more oil from the infirmary, Sakneth argued.

"No. We just have to cross the weyrbowl and then wend our way through some more tunnels and...You're not even listening to me." B'shir sighed as he realized that his dragon's attention was completely focused on Sharath, who lounged high over their heads. Presumably with her rider.

We should visit with them, Sakneth said.

"And how do you propose we get up there?" B'shir asked. "You can't fly, the last time I checked, and I'm not sure I know how to get to that ledge from another approach. Besides, if you want to be oiled tonight we have to pick up more oil. You're out. Again."

Fine. After we pick up the oil, can we come back this way? Maybe they will have moved somewhere we can get to them by then. Sakneth was clearly sulking, though at the same time he seemed to be taking an optimistic approach to the situation. B'shir figured the dragon considered the two situations separate: Oil and Gold. B'shir shrugged. Maybe they were.

"If you like. But don't get your hopes up," B'shir replied as they stepped into the Weyr.

For a time they remained perched on Amelia's favourite ledge, basking in sun and warmth simply enjoying one another's company. It was a beautiful day and the rare opportunity for Amelia to simply rest and relax away from family, duty, and learning. With such a hectic schedule as she now had - moments of such contemplative peace were greatly enjoyed.

As with everything, however, the rest had to come to a close as Amelia's stomach growled frightening loud and made Sharath start, her gaze fixed on her rider's stomach, I felt that Amelia! Amusement coloured the gold's voice and she tossed her head with a laugh, rising to stand beside Hers. She'd grown quite a bit over the past weeks and now stood should to mid-chest of Amelia.

It amazed the girl how quickly and how big Sharath was growing. Granted, she'd seen Dorath but... well, Dorath was her bonded and she didn't spend any great amount of time with that gold. Sharath made Amelia inwardly preen and outwardly proud - she was growing without issue, her hide was in excellent condition and she was going to be so very big and impressive.

Catching Amelia's train of though, Sharath whuffled proudly and stood tall and proud, mood bouyed up even more by the approval of Hers. She knew she could rely on the other to be frank, honest, and fresh in her opinions - that she could be a Green still be the source of such pride. Amelia cared not for the dragonet's colour and was not bound by the preconceptions the Weyr liked to instill in its Candidates. They were a great team as far as Sharath was concerned, truly great.

When they finally made their way down through the tunnels that wound and twisted through the rock, the pair came out in the Weyrbowl just outside a small service tunnel meant for the labourers of the Weyr. "Food time, I think Sharath. I wonder what's cooked today..." Turning towards the kitchens, she stretched long and lean like a cat, her back popping in several places, unused to the time spent still and sitting. Clad in basic coveralls and a tunic with rolled up sleeves, had Sharath not be alongside her, one would never guess her to be a dragon rider.

B'shir, if we more slowly, Sharath and her human could catch up with us, Sakneth informed his human.

"And why would they want to do that?" B'shir asked. It wasn't as though he'd had much cause or chance to interact with the newest goldrider. She would take her lessons with Dorath and the Weyrwoman while he continued to take lessons with D'astel.

Because I am magnificent and you're not bad either, Sakneth was quick to reply. They were passing the kitchens. Could you see if there's anything for me to eat while we're here?

B'shir shrugged. "All right. But you're the one who insists on being oiled twice daily. If we don't make it to the infirmary before chores, you'll have to forgo being oiled tonight, or make do with only being oiled where your hide actually needs it, if it does at all. Which I doubt."

That's fine, Sakneth assured his human.

B'shir poked his head around the entrance to the kitchen to see who was on duty. He was familiar with all of the regular kitchen workers, but the candidates who worked the kitchens were another matter. He tried to keep abreast of who came and went, but the candidate population was on in constant flux and even when he'd been a candidate he'd only paid attention to those who brought themselves to his attention. He'd been too busy training with Rath. Now he was too busy training with Sakneth.

"Stay outside," he told Sakneth. "You're getting too big to follow me around in there, and I'd hate for something to happen to you."

What he really meant by that was that he he'd hate for Sakneth to cause anything to happen to him. The dragon was getting large, and so he didn't maneuver so well in the narrower space of the kitchen. He also tended to put his nose - literally - where it didn't belong. B'shir had had his hands smacked with kitchen implements often enough in his youth to know that the seasoned workers had no difficulty doing the same to young dragons who got grabby. Sakneth always seemed inclined to grabbiness.

All right. But bring me the best of what food you find for me. And something for yourself, too.

They soon caught up to B'shir and Sakneth, the pair pausing at the Kitchen entrance to peer curiously at the bronze. Why was he left out here? Had his rider told him to stay? Amelia smiled to the dragon, offering a small wave, "Hallo."

Sharath spoke more, though, Greetings... why are you in the hall? Does Yours not want you with him...? It was obviously the gold found such a thing rather odd as she craned her neck to see around Amelia and into the kitchen cavern.

"Sharath... I'm hungry, I'll get us some food. You coming?" Amelia asked, eyeing her dragon, "Or you can stay here if you like."

I will stay here, Mine. I wish to speak to him. Bring me something tasty, alright? Sharath replied, her gaze shifting to focus on Amelia as her rider nodded a disappeared into the kitchens as well. Returning her attention to Sakneth she tilted her head slightly, I trust you're well?
PostPosted: Sun Nov 01, 2009 5:52 pm

Sakneth glanced at Amelia. He wouldn't dismiss her out of hand, though she was both female and human, but he had not yet seen her do anything worthy of his respect. For now he would be polite to her simply because his clutchmate had chosen her and B'shir said he ought to be polite to those humans golds Impressed to. The bronze didn't quite understand it, but he would go along with it. If nothing else, it would probably go over better with Sharath if he at least attempted to be polite to her human.

B'shir says I'm too large to maneuver easily in there, Sakneth said. He was a little proud of this. He knew he would never be the largest bronze in the Weyr, even after he finished growing, but B'shir had appealed to his vanity in citing his size as an excuse, and Sakneth was happy to accept it.

I am well. You look well, he said in response to Sharath's question. I saw you earlier today. You were with your human.

Inside the kitchen, B'shir had no difficulties conveying his need to the workers. They were used to weyrlings coming in to request food for their bonds. It helped, of course, that his mother was working. She had been thrilled to see him and begun heaping meat into a bowl for Sakneth before he even had to ask, all the while chattering about how proud she was of him for Impressing. B'shir bit his tongue and said nothing, though he had heard all this before and was tired of hearing it from his mother.

"Thank you," he said just a little shortly. "Sakneth's pretty hungry, so I'd better take this to him."

He was just leaving when he saw Amelia come in. He moved so that he would be out of her way, greeting her with a casual, "Good afternoon."

Sharath blinked and looked into the dining area a bit skeptically, Are you certain that is why...? I can move around in there. People shuffle out of the way for me. She puffed a little at that, though it never occured to her that they might move not because they respected her but because they didn't want to deal with her outburst in the middle of a meal if they didn't have to. Thankfully, however, Sharath was good natured about the whole thing when they did visit even if people's memories of the hatching did not fade as fast as a dragon's.

You saw me earlier...? Oh. We were watching the others soar and sunbathe. The tone of her mental voice almost seemed to ask if he liked what he saw, baiting the bronze into some sort of pleasant remark. How have you been, Sakneth? I do not get to see the others very much because Mine and I take lessons with Luci. There was a bit of an edge as she spoke Luci's name but it was quick to pass and hard to notice as she tilted her head, curious about the goings on of her peers.

Amelia greeted B'shir much the same way he had her, with a casual 'hello' and a wave, "Getting something for your dragon? Sharath's asked for something to eat too, anything particularly nice for them available today? She wants something akin to a treat." It was an odd question to ask but B'shir was obviously carrying dragon food and why not ask someone who'd just been there? Besides, they were peers and she really did need to get to know them better.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 10, 2009 8:07 am

Of course people move out of your way. You're a queen, Sakneth said, a little startled that she thought everyone received the same treatment. Personally, Sakneth felt he deserved that sort of treatment, but B'shir refused to force the issue. It was incredibly frustrating sometimes.

B'shir nodded. "Yes. Sakneth's decided to put his vanity on hold for a snack. And what you see is what we get, though my mother might be able to come up with something special for Sharath. She likes to spoil dragons, particularly when their riders won't let her spoil them."

He pointed with his chin to the woman who was his mother. There was some family resemblance between them, but it was B'shir Igen heritage that most people noticed, with his dark coloring and curly hair, so they were sometimes surprised to learn that his mother was a small, mousy woman with unremarkable brown eyes and dark blonde hair that was greying somewhat.

"Her name's Nisha. She'll probably fuss over you." It didn't occur to him to be ashamed that his mother worked in the kitchens, or that a goldrider would be meeting her in that capacity. He and his mother weren't close or anything, but he had never been ashamed of her. Mostly he didn't think of her at all, especially now that he was living in the weyrling barracks.

I can't wait until I can fly, Sakneth said feelingly. I will be the best at it. B'shir is already very good at it, but he's had longer to practice, and he doesn't actually have to fly. He just has to not fall off. There was a sense that he was laughing at B'shir and humans in general as he said this.

But I've been well. B'shir cares for me well and Teharth has learned to keep his distance, so I don't have to deal with his insolence most of the time. What are lessons with Luci like? I take lessons with an ancient brown that I have to be nice to because his rider's B'shir's grandfather. That's how B'shir got good a flying.

Of course. But you're a dragon... and you're hungry too, Sakneth. They should move out of the way. She snorted and glanced again at those gathered in the kitchen's commons, only to have her attention drawn back to the bronze at the sudden confession, Flying? Yes... I am excited to be allowed into the sky as well. Yours already knows to fly? That is impressive.

The gold's eyes whirled green and blue, and her lips curled up into a draconic grin, Mine must learn yet.... but I think Mine dreams of the skies too. Our lessons with Luci consist mostly of Luci telling Amelia what her duties are and how to better care for me... weyrling things. And things to expect when we finally become Weyrwoman and Senior Queen. Passion was plain in her mental voice as she spoke, shuffling her feet and mantling her wings a little. Her goals were obvious and the determination to see that goal through was unlimited.

Amelia smiled at B'shir, "Oh? Well, I don't think spoiling Sharath is particularly wise. Though you need good food to grow well, right?" She frowned in the direction where her dragon was conversing with the bronze and from the whirling, bright colours of her eyes, she was in a good mood. "Nisha? Alright. Thank-you!"

Turning away from the bronzerider, Amelia started off towards B'shir's mother - catching her eye. That his mother was a kitchen worker didn't register with Amelia, she saw only another person and saw no ranks dividing them.
PostPosted: Sun Nov 22, 2009 8:27 am

B'shir does well enough at getting me whatever I want, Sakneth replied. There's not much need for me to go in there and stir everyone up. I mean, it could be a little embarrassing to have everyone fuss over me just because my hide's metallic.

Which was not true at all. He would love to have everyone fuss over him just because he was a bronze. But he had learned from his time spent with B'shir and his family that humility, or a charade of humility, could be more effective than his natural arrogance when it came to dealing with others. Ordinarily he wouldn't bother, but Sharath was a gold, and that meant she was the only other dragon besides their mother who was his equal. He would rather be liked among his peers, since there were so few of them.

Sakneth wasn't sure how pleased he was that Sharath was impressed by his rider. He loved his rider, sure, but there was no reason for Sharath to care one way or the other about him. B'shir was only a human, after all. It's really not that impressive. He has harnesses to help him stay on, and it's not like he has to do any of the real work. Not like we will, when we're allowed to fly. You'll probably be very good at it.

The bronze heard his human's voice and was tempted to sneak a peek into the kitchens, but he didn't want to actually turn his attention away from Sharath. It wasn't likely, with her attending separate lessons, that he would have too many opportunities to converse with the gold until they were much older. He knew he should take advantage of this time to make a favorable impression. Which reminded him...

B'shir, he said sharply, you must do what you can to make Sharath's like you. I would like to see Sharath again, and that is more likely to happen if her human likes you.

Borrowing some of B'shir's memories to augment his own, more limited recall, Sakneth asked, Didn't yours do lots underground before you claimed her? What if she turns out to be afraid of heights?

B'shir's expression didn't change as he listened to his dragon's demands, but he was amused by them. He would have been pleasant to Amelia anyway because she was a human being and a goldrider, but he could oblige his dragon and make an effort to make a good impression. Not that he anticipated much success in that endeavor. People tended to be put off by his unsmiling countenance. His gaze followed Amelia as she interacted with his mother and he wasn't surprised to see that Nisha recognized Amelia immediately and began hunting up treats for Sharath.

At one point Nisha caught his eye when she didn't think Amelia was looking and gave him a questioning look that he had no idea how to interpret. Considering how limited her interests were - family, gossip, and family gossip - she was probably trying to figure out if there was any connection between himself and Amelia. He gave her one of his blankest stares. There was no way he was going to give her any encouragement in manufacturing some sort of rumor that there was anything going on between himself and the Weyr's newest goldrider.

Sakneth listened to Sharath intently, and then asked, And what should you expect, when you finally become Weyrwoman and Senior Queen?

Sharath frowned, surprised another would not want the attention, Really? If I walked in there everyone would know me and my rank and see their future queen and pay their respects. It is good when people do that... and Dorath's has said to get to know our people, Amelia liked that advice. She arched her neck proudly at his compliment as her eyes whirled blues and greens, happy for his words, I will be. There is no other way, I must stay ahead of the bronze and brown dragons.

Her words were strong, confident, and gave a strong impression of her views of a Flight, however limited they were right now. Sharath was determined not be caught so easily by any dragon, only the one she favoured most would be graced with that. And her small size lent itself to greater maneuverability in addition to her stamina that would ensure her choice would win.

Sharath snorted at Sakneth's question, eyeing him, She is not. She yearns to fly as I do. It was odd how the gold always spoke with confidence, was always sure of herself. She had goals and she would achieve them, woe to those who thought she would not.

Amelia missed that look Nisha had shot B'shir and it was a good thing too, for it would have been an awkward question to answer. She had no love right now, no important other person - besides Sharath that was - and it suited her fine for now. Her dragon was love and company and support... and demanding enough to fill her time between lessons almost completely.

Perhaps later she would find someone to love in addition to Sharath... but that was a grey area for her. Was she allowed a lover despite her rank? She almost felt as if that would reflect badly on her.

With a sigh, she dismissed the thought and paused as she passed B'shir, "You don't have to wait..." She smiled though, a silent thanks for the gesture nonetheless and ignorant of Sakneth's request.

Change where change is needed, tradition where tradition is needed. Sharath replied easily, still confident in herself, And a strong weyr, together and steadfast. I will lead and I will be good at it. Keeping to her dreams, however, would not be as easy as she thought and still rough around the edges in her ability to lead, Sharath had a long way to go before she proved to be worthy of her words - though, of course, she already thought she was.
PostPosted: Sun Nov 22, 2009 11:41 am

Of course they would. And they would do the same for me. But then they wouldn't get their work done and people might go hungry. Sakneth couldn't care less if the majority of the humans in the Weyr didn't get their dinners, but B'shir got grouchy if he wasn't fed regularly, so it was in the bronze's best interest to see that B'shir got fed. There was also the fact that Sakneth couldn't guarantee that everyone in the kitchen would react the way he wanted them to, and his ego wouldn't care for that sort of bruising.

Sakneth had only a very vague idea of what a mating Flight entailed. He knew what usual flights were like, and he knew that he was expected to stay in a formation when he flew, and so Sharath's confident statement was somewhat confusing to him. Perhaps that was a queen's place in formation. Except they didn't fight Thread. That much he knew for certain. B'shir had been very careful not to let any thoughts about mating Flights or what followed filter through to his dragon. He would have been surprised to learn how effective he'd been at keeping his dragon in the dark.

If that is what you must do in flight, I'm sure you will do it, Sakneth said, trying not to sound too ignorant. And I hope you are right. I can't imagine how awful it would be to bond to someone who's afraid of heights.

B'shir edged out of Amelia's way so that she could pass by and then followed her out of the kitchen carrying Sakneth's snack. He'd caught his smile, and from the sense of satisfaction he got from his dragon the bronze had been dividing his attention between his conversation and B'shir. Sakneth was pleased that Amelia smiled. His understanding of the nuances of human expressions was limited with B'shir as his best example, but he did know that smiles were good things.

Say something to her, Sakneth commanded. And then added hastily, Something pleasant.

Thanks for telling me that last bit, because I was planning on calling her ugly and then insulting her father, B'shir replied sarcastically. From the tone of Sakneth's feelings, B'shir got the impression his dragon didn't trust him not to do just that.

"It's no trouble," B'shir replied. "Besides, Sakneth told me to. He wants to spend more time with Sharath."

Sakneth snaked his head around, aghast at his human's declaration. He didn't catch any of what Sharath said about her lessons. He was horrified that B'shir would say something like that. That wasn't at all what he was supposed to say.

B'shir! he howled mentally, though only in B'shir's mind.

Sharath rumbled with amusement at that, You are bronze, Sakneth, not Gold. They would go hungry for me. Actually... that was an interesting thought. If both Sakneth and Sharath wandered into the Kitchen Commons, who would they pay more attention to? Obviously her, she believe, because she was gold.

She turned back to him, idle thoughts of competition subsiding at the compliment, I will. I am right, Sakneth. Mine is not afraid of heights... she will love them and we will soar. As soon as Dorath lets me... they say we cannot fly yet. It is obvious I can.... you can too.

Amelia nodded, though she paused almost in tandem with Sharath, and they both looked to the bronze dragonet. The goldrider seemed amused, one brow arched high upon her forehead as she chuckled softly and Sharath sniffed, tilting her head as though the thought that this might all be some game to gain favour had not occurred to her - he had seemed honest in his approach. Now that it had, however, irritation whirled in her eyes, Why are you speaking to me, Sakneth? It was a baited question.

"Hmn... he's taken a liking to her?" She asked cautiously, Sharath's thoughts also flickering across her own. Though it wasn't nearly as baited a question as the one Sharath had asked of the bronze.
PostPosted: Wed Dec 09, 2009 10:42 am

Sakneth wasn't sure how to respond to Sharath's confident statement that the people in the kitchen would go hungry for her. He didn't doubt it, but he was also reasonably certain that they would go hungry for any dragon if it came down to it. Which showed a lack of discernment on their part, he felt. Of course Sharath was important enough to warrant that, and he was, but he wasn't at all sure that the blues, greens, and browns of the Weyr were worth that sort of sacrifice. Particularly not Teharth. They could eat him and feast for days.

The regard of both gold and rider was not easy for Sakneth to ignore, but he made himself do it. He was far too proud to admit that he was discomfited by their dual stare. When Sharath asked suspiciously why he was speaking to her, he gave serious thought to biting his human. This was all B'shir's fault. That stupid human knew nothing about females. Nothing. And now he was going to ruin everything.

"Something like that," B'shir agreed. "But mostly he's too proud to let on."

Sakneth was still not sure he didn't want to bite B'shir, but the human's response might act as a saving grace. Now he just had to make sure to answer Sharath in a way that wouldn't get her hackles up, so to speak. Not a problem for someone as good with women as he was.

I'm speaking to you because I want to. As far as he was concerned, that was an explanation and a compliment all rolled into one. It wasn't as though he made a habit of speaking to people who didn't interest him or that he considered beneath him. If he wanted to speak to a person, they had best feel flattered by his attention. Even a gold.

Amelia laughed softly as she returned her attention to B'shir, satisfied with his answer even if she wondered if the prejudice that humans carried translated over to dragons. Sharath had made it painfully clear she hated when people tried to use her because she gold - adoration, respect, blind obedience? She could easily, and willingly, enjoy those things. But, as soon as you tried to capitalize on her stature, she suspected every action you took.

For B'shir and Sakneth's sake she rather hoped that wasn't the case. Sharath had few friends and a pleasant encounter with a clutch mate would help Amelia believed. "Does he flirt with all the ladies?" She quipped, amused.

Sharath's focus did not waver as she regarded the bronze with a critical eye, waiting a moment to savour his words before she decide whether or not she trusted them. After a moment of silence, she snorted and tossed her head, You would do best to want to talk to me, Sakneth. She didn't seem flattered but she seemed to be appeased by the answer and ruffled her wings as she spoke next, Have you spoken with any of the other Weyrlings? I do not see them often now.
