the best way to work on pronunciation if you aren't taking a formal class or have a tutor is watch shows or movies in Japanese. Or even listen to music, though I think that tv shows (or pod casts) would be more helpful (they tend to elongate a lot of things in music just like we do in English ^^). I know on AJATT there is a link to some stories in Japanese that also have the audio with it... so you can read and follow along.

I am currently enrolled in a Japanese class, and pronunciation is key. If you make a syllable/consonant too long, you can change the words meaning....

Ex using Hiragana:
とく。toku (so?)
とおく。 tooku (Far away)

I mainly have pronunciation down, except for (of course) the R lol. I can get it sometimes, it seems. What's even harder is an Ry. x_x

Maybe I should just stick to rolling my Rs like some people do. xD

I find the pronunciation fairly easy... but then again English is not my first language so I have a slightly more extended availability to other forms of pronouncing things. when I listen to Japanese audio samples,I find some of the syllables to sound very similar to Spanish sounds. especially the "R". One thing I recommend for you is to get a set of audio samples to follow and practice with. Right now, I'm using one called Instant Immersion Japanese. its pretty good but you have to buy it to have access to it. If money is a problem, you can probably find a copy of it at a half price books store for half price or at a local library for free. 3nodding

There are more than a few in this guild that know a decent amount of Japanese, myself included. If those who want to learn are so inclined, send a tell of find us on skype. there has been previous talk about a skype study session and I would be more than happy to host one or two a week if there is enough people willing to study together.
