Despair. Yes, that was what it was. That feeling eating away at Kurosage, a mother of four pups. Was she really qualified to be their mother? She was alone, with no mate. She had found a safe place to give birth to them, Piper was a great alpha... but she had nearly lost her own youngest! Teita! Teita was almost pupnapped, right near her home!
And what happened next? Her son, her Satoru! He was nowhere to be found. Where was he? He just disappeared! Her son had been near, and then had left. And Satoru hadn't been back in so long. Could the crazy she-wolf have come back? Did he wander away to be taken by another wolf? A two-legger? From the other, nefarious packs of wolves? Could it have been from the one pack, the one whispers of the forests and winds? The one of the shadows and of brothers?
But what could Kuro do? She had tried to track his scent. It was long lost. Nothing. No tracks. He had just disappeared. No one had seen him, not since she last saw him, worried over the near pupnapping of his own sister.
Kuro laid down in the den, where her pups had used to be all the time. She laid her head on her paws, tilted so that her one of her ears touched a foreleg. She whined and howled her grief, her pain not hard to notice. And what could Teita do? Watching her mother filled with grief and anguish. What could Teita do, full of guilt. Her brother had disappeared while here she was safe and sound. She had been near taken from her home, her mother, her brothers and sister. But Sato was actually gone! Her brother, no where to be found. Teita loved both of her brothers, just a bit more than she could love Agrona, who was such an angry puppy. Teita could only feel the survivor's guilt that swallowed her feelings. Why was it that she was here? Why was it that her brother was not? Teita turned, trying to take comfort in her mother's warmth. Teita just didn't know how to stay strong. How could she grow to make her mother and her family look worthy to have been taken in by Piper when her family had been hurt so? A young pup, being almost taken away. Another, gone. Who knew what happened to him. Teita tried to crawl closer and closer. She shut her eyes, trying to hide from the aching pain, whining.

Xavierie tucked himself closer to mother's side, pressed up against Teita's hindquarters, his muzzle resting on his sister and his eyes closing. Images swirled around in his mind; images of that crazy blue peacock who tried to steal Teita away. He'd kept himself close to her sense; he could still tell that being held in the jaws of danger had scared her more than she'd like to admit. It had scared them all.
And now this.
Satoru was missing. He'd been gone for a few days now. Mother had gone after him and come back empty pawwed. Surprise anger climbed through the crevices of Xavi's mind. He was angry at himself, for not following Sato that day. Angry at that she-wolf for trying to take Teita... And angry at Mother, for not having a male, a father-figure, to protect them. Surely a father could've stopped Sato from disappearing... Sorrow wasn't far behind the anger but the pup didn't let it vocalize. He just sighed, breathing in deep and loudly, letting it out to blow against Teita's fur.
Damn and double damn... But at least he had his sisters, even if Sato was gone, right? He curled into Mother more.

Kuro didn't know how to deal with this anguish. She gave a whimper, hugging and licking her pups as they curled into her.
Could this have been prevented, having a mate? Could such a male have dealt with her weakness, stopping from the attempt for Teita's life? The disappearance of Satoru?
Was all of this her fault? Was she such a bad mother that Gaia wanted to take her pups from her?
She gave another whimper, was it time to look for a male, one to take up the absence she just couldn't fill?
Teita frowned, feeling the distress and the swarm of emotions filling her family. The guilt, the anger, the sadness. Could she have been just that stronger?
If she had had a father, would this have been prevented? If one came to be, could he protect them? Could he protect their family? Could he help them prove their worth?
She turned from her mother, feeling the need for the comfort and closeness she had always felt for Xavi. They at least still had each other... at least.
"Xavi, what can we do?" The raspy whisper.

Agrona was angry, no not angry for that was her usual state. She was furious, livid with rage, her body shook with it. Her brother was gone, really gone, and her mother was sad. She HATED it she hated it all, why did it happen? Why was HER brother gone, he was HER brother he wasn't supposed to be gone. They were a family and that wasn't supposed to ever change. She snarled then at her siblings, because the pup didn't know how to show her inner sadness, her inner confusion, she just growled at them and snapped her fangs against her brothers flank.
"We shouldn't have gone outside! We should have stayed in the den! The den was safe!" She glared at her siblings her eyes glowing fiercely against her stark black coat. Why did they have to go out into the hot horrible sunlight? Why did they bring such trouble?
She arched against her mother trying to soothe her anger everything was covered in that strange red haze when proper reason faded from her mind. She would have to force others to understand, obviously.

Xavi turned to Teita, lifting his big head, ears quriking forwards. What do they do? The answer wasn't simple and he didn't really know it. But he couldn't let her down. "I'll find a way to fix this," he promised albeit a little bitterly. He glanced up, ears pinning at Agrona. He lunged to his feet in with an uncharactaristic-quickness. "We can't hide in the den forever. There'll come a day when we must leave it! One day, this den will be our downfall," he snapped back, turning away from Mother and his siblings. "Stay here. I'll find...a way to fix this..." The words were bit out, harsh, as he ambled through the mouth of the cave and began to wander in the darkness of the night. It was nearly dawn and the air smelled crisp, of autumn leaves and treefrogs in the nearby forest. Gomorrah was their home. It was safe... He thought of his lost brother and of Teita's near-kidnapping and he frowned. It wasn't safe...
They needed a protector...
So it was now that he set out to find the alpha, Piper. He needed an outside opinion and he was going to get it. However, a few paces away, he froze. His muzzle wrinkled at the new, musty male scent. His back bristled and the usually calm puppy glanced back towards his den and then towards the woods, where the smell was coming from. "Come out from the shadows, coward!" he hissed.

Kurosage sighed against her remaining treasures. She couldn't even bring herself to call to Xavi as he left. Was she really this pathetic? How could she be so weak? Why was she like this?
But if Kuro was true to herself, her pups were those who became Kuro's saving grace. If she couldn't do well for herself, she would do everything for her pups. Losing one so precious to her, hurt.
She huffed some more, burrowing with her daughters, eyes shut tight.Teita frowned, listening to Agrona. Watching her brother Xavi leave. How was he going to make things right? She turned back to her snarling sister. She was just so... angry. "But we won't ever grow without leaving the den! Mama can't be proud of us if we can't do things!" Teita growled back at her sister. But could Agrona really have a point? Was it her fault that the she-wolf nearly took her away? Should she have never left? Was it Satoru's fault for going out? Was his disappearing his fault? The PACK lands were safe! They were supposed to be. Why would being out in the pack lands so wrong? Teita shook her head and growled. But it wasn't Agrona's fault either. She was her sister and was thus family. It wasn't her fault... not Agrona's fault that Satoru was gone who knew where. Teita whined, and just nudged her head against Agrona, trying to say sorry for yelling and growling at her own family. She turned to face the opening of the den. Things wouldn't happen again like before. She wouldn't let Xavi be unheard if he needed help. The red furred wolf prowled through the forest. The bright golden eyes weren't missing much. He wasn't particularly looking for anyone or anything but anything was fine. Though he was cautious. He didn't want to have crossed the scent markers he noticed as the borders of a packland but he'd already been around. Passing through here seemed to be a better way than to go around. Reaumer was pretty sure he could go around unnoticed. He tucked his head and body closer to the ground, tail closer to his hind legs.
He paused as he closed in near more wolf scents. That wasn't such a good idea. Reaumer didn't know the way this pack of wolves acted. Were they the murderous type? Those who weren't good to the young, to teach and discipline them? Or were they uncaring? Was that noise?
Reaumer tried to make no noise but it sounded like he was caught.
"I'm not a coward. I'm just trying to move through," Reaumer corrected. It was a young pup to catch him. What interesting fur. Reaumer had to stifle his smile. Intriguing. Such a bright color, and the pup's eyes. What was he doing out so?
Reaumer tried to show he didn't mean harm. He lowered his head and smiled. "My name is Reaumer, young pup. I don't mean to hide but I'm just trying to move through. I don't mean you or yours any harm."
Reaumer sat on his haunches, still ready to dart as fast as he could if the pup wanted to do something. "How come a young one like you is out here alone? You shouldn't be alone, you might be hurt. There are packs of evil around. I've heard of some whose pups have disappeared."

Young Xavierie wasn't quite sure what he was expecting, but not a young male's voice to float through the air and pipe into his shiny yellow ears. Said ears flattened, body tensing. So there was another wolf out here. He took his nose to the air and sniffed. Sniffed again. Not pack. Not from Gomorrah. He gave a small sigh, sitting with a plop on his haunches. "I suppose... I'm Xavierie. Xavi. Reaumer..." He tried out the name. It was foreign on his tongue.
"We've lost pups," he admitted, even though that made Piper and Hurricane, the alphas, sound weak and unwilling to protect them. He huffed. "I'm looking for something..." He paused, uncertain. Should he go on? Perhaps this wolf might be able to help. "A...protector...of sorts. You see, my sister was nearly stolen away from here. My brother disappeared. My mother is sad..." His ears twitched up. Wait a moment... A grin rose upon his face. Could this stranger be their saving grace? "How quick are you on your feet?"

The red head tilted, a bit confused Reaumer was. He moved closer to the young pup, slowly and not too slow but not too quick. He didn't want to startle the shiny pup.
"Xaviere," Reaumer sounded out. "... I think Xavi is easier to say." Reaumer gave the young pup a smile. The both had pretty interesting names didn't they?
He lost his smile at the news of lost pups however. What had happened so? Was there some plot? Something going wrong. Was this why the young Xavi was alone? Reaumer would have thought the father or mother would have been watching Xavi, as young as he was. Not yet a teen but not a newborn Xavi would still have much to learn... he still needed to be protected, as other pups his age should.
Reaumer asked gently, "Lost pups... So you've lost your brother and your sister was nearly stolen.. How did your brother get lost? What was his name? Your sisters?"
Reaumer could tell the young pup was conflicted. Xavi had just lost a brother, family. Treasure. And he was hurting and didn't have the support he should have. Was this also why he was not with his mother and father?
Though he wasn't quite sure what the young pup's grin and question was for. "I.. am quite quick I believe...." Reaumer trailed off. He didn't know what the pup was up to.
"Though I must ask Xavi. Why are you not with your mother. You say she is sad... how come you are not with her and your father?" Reaumer asked.

He watched him, his own head tilting curiously. What an odd red wolf... He didn't move, didn't flinch as the bigger wolf sidled up to him. For a moment, he had a small bout of panic, realizing he wasn't covered in mud, his shine showing to the world...but this wolf didn't seem to mind. Plus it was dark out...right? He huffed again.
"Lost brother, yes... His name was Satoru..." He paused, feeling off. Was... As if Sato was dead. He shivered. "His name -is- Satoru. Sato. We don't know where he went, he just disappeared. Mother's worried sick... My sisters are Teita and Agrona; Agrona's a hardass..." Gone were the days of being a bumbling happy pup; Xavi was nearly six months old and had a foul mouth.
Quick. Quick meant he could learn to protect them. A smile showed on his face for a moment and he ambled to his paws. "Good. Come with me," he barked out, then padded back towards the den. Over his shoulder, he spoke, "I'm looking for someone to protect us. I think you're that wolf. Mom! Mom!" He looked into the den and gave a bark, tail wiggling a little. "Agrona. Teita. Come look..."

Reaumer coughed, what a mouth this puppy had. Though he didn't have the squeeky clean mouth so he couldn't complain.
"Satoru... huh? Xavi, Teita, Agrona, and Satoru," Reaumer nodded. Four pups, half of them had been involved in such a way that the family was traumatized it sounded like.
Reaumer wasn't quite sure why Xavi's mother wasn't here. Why wasn't she supporting her pups? She could be worried and still take care of Xavi and his sisters... He turned his head when Xavi yelled out. Maybe he could tell Xavi's mother what he thought.
Kuro paused, and quickly shot up. Xavi was calling for her. What was wrong? Was it Sato? Oh Sato! The black and orange wolf nudged Teita and Agrona aside, pacing out of the den for Xavi.
"Xavi! Xavi, is it Sato?"
But it wasn't. Xavi was next to this strange red furred wolf. "Who... who are you?" Kuro asked. What was this stranger doing with her son?
Teita groaned as her mother shot up at Xavi's voice. She pounced onto her four paws, to run outside following her mother. Was it Sato? Maybe Xavi fixed it by finding Satoru!
Teita stopped, however, seeing the stranger. Her ears perched up, "Yah what are you doing with my brother?" Teita was a bit suspicious. Who was he? But... Xavi said he would fix things.. it wasn't Satoru but... it was a male adult wolf. Was he... could he be their help? Protector? Was that what Xavi wanted?
"Is... is he a protector for us Xavi?" She grinned.
... Confusion. Reaumer turned from black and orange she wolf to the young pup to Xavi. He assumed the she wolf was their mother and that the young pup was either Teita or Agrona. But.. what was this about being a protector? He had... just wanted to move through the lands. But now that the mother was out..
"You're Xavi's mother correct?" Reaumer asked. He continued, "Well I think you're doing a crap job of being supportive. Xavi was out here alone, and someone, maybe those who took Sato, could have stolen him too! You are in your den, moping being pathetic! Where is your mate anyways? How come he's not here to support you?"
Teita bristled. He could be nice but he just insulted mother by calling her a pathetic wolf! "Hey... mother's not been so great but.. but don't call her that!"
Kuro paused, bristling and snarling at him. Pathetic?... She was raising her family by herself. How could... she...
"I!... I!..." Kuro snarled, "I don't have a mate. Their father is nowhere to be found!"
Reaumer blinked and sighed, looking apologetic. "I am sorry then miss. But you shouldn't have allowed him outside. He could've been hurt. Could you have helped him, acting as you were?"

Xavi wavered beside the big red wolf, watching as his mother and shiny-pelted sister sprang to his words. His heart fell... No... He couldn't save Sato now... He was long gone, not even leaving a scent behind. Believe me, he'd followed it as far as he could. So he stood there, uncertain. Had he made a good choice?
Until Reaumer began to talk. He gazed up at the male, brows furrowing. Steal? Him? He snorted. "Listen here, pal! I'm not gonna get stolen by some rogue." But he wasn't heard, his voice covered by Teita's complaint. His ears flattened at his mother's snarl. She wasn't pathetic...she was just...sad?
"Excuse me, but listen up. I'm a big boy. I'm not gonna get stolen." He shot a glance at Mother, worried she would freak out again. "Mom..." He coughed. "This is Reaumer. He's going to protect us." He shot the red wolf a small, secretive smile. "Aren't you?" Even though Kuro didn't seem to like the stranger just yet, he was certain that in a few weeks or maybe months, they could be close. A couple? Now who was the matchmaker...

Agrona was beyond furious now, her stupid brother had brought a stranger, some male to insult their mother? He didn't look like a protector he looked pathetic, and who did he think he was sticking his nose in their den. It was THEIRS not his!
She launched herself then furiously her dark form like a middle with only a flash of white fangs. She was going to grab onto him and not let go! Her eyes glowed with ferocity and if she had unlocked her jaw from the stranger she might have yelled at her brother, but she was too busy trying to inflict harm on the male who had dared intrude on their moment.

Kurosage wanted to react. React and instinct worked wonders for a wolf but... he was right. Wasn't he? She hadn't gone to follow her baby, and she didn't know the answer to his question. Kuro didn't know if she would have been able to go out fast enough to save Xavi if he had needed it, he was still young. She didn't know if this Reaumer was completely correct but.. maybe if he knew how to do things, he should stay.
"Maybe he is right..." She mumbled.
She snapped back again, seeing Agrona leap at the stranger, angry as she always was.
Reaumer was quick on his paws like he had told Xavi, giving a small smile. He kind of liked the spunk and attitude the kids had. None of them were bad pups, just reeling from the trauma of losing a loved one.
... and maybe not having the support and pillar of strength of having a father.
He wasn't quite quick enough to dodge the other she wolf's lunge as she caught his tail in her jaws. He snarled, gave a small growl and decided she was a bit too unhappy for his tastes. "You!" Reaumer continued to twist his body and used his paw to catch her tail and force it against the ground. He made sure the nails weren't out and he caught her head in his jaws, not forcefully but to remind her she was still just a pup.
Reaumer paused, looking at Xavi, Kuro and the other sister. Was the one he had in his jaws Agrona or Teita?
Teita didn't catch her sister in time, all she had been able to say was "Yes this Reaumer stranger could be their protector" to Xavi, when Agrona had lunged at him. She WAS angry. Teita wasn't sure if maybe Reaumer would run. But maybe if Reaumer stayed... he was, would be a great protector. ... Maybe he could be their father?
"Agrona!" She yelped. She actually thought she'd like him. He look so cool, reacting to how Agrona had his tail in her jaws. Maybe she could forgive him for insulting her mother.
Teita paused though, was that just her imagination? Mother had agreed? "Mother, you think so too?" Teita looked at her mother's face.
Teita hoped she had. She might actually really like this guy.
Kuro was amazed at how Reaumer had reacted to Reaumer's lunge. She admitted it. She nearly flinched seeing him with Agrona's head in his jaws but... she could see it wasn't too harmful to Agrona.
"Agrona..." Kuro sighed. She didn't understand the constant anger Agrona felt. She turned to Reaumer and said, "Please let go of her. Thank you.. you were right. I shouldn't have let my grief for one completely decimate the safety of my other treasures."
She turned to the young treasure she felt she had let down. "Agrona, he didn't insult me. He showed me how pathetic I was acting."
But Kuro had one thought in her mind. "If you think you can be so supportive hotstuff. Why don't you show me?"

This all happened in a blur. Xavi didn't flinch, but he didn't step backwards either, watching it with wide green eyes as Agrona latched onto the stranger's tail. Reaumer successfully blocked her and Xavi's ears pricked up. Reau had been right: he was quick on his paws. A lazy grin rose on the yellow pup's face and he made his way to Teita's side, nudging her face. "See?" he asked, tail wagging. "He's perfect. Look at Mom. He's gonna have her eating outta his open paw!" And them... They would get a dad. For once in their young lives. He glanced back up at Reaumer, grinning down at Agrona. Not teasingly or mockingly, but knowingly. "You've gotta stay, you know," he chirped.

Agrona snarled and growled thrashing with fury, she would kill him! Just wait once she was old enough his coat would be a different shade of red, darkened by the wet stains...She leapt back away her fangs bared at him and puppy snarls ripping from her throat. How dare he, this was unacceptable! He couldn't stay!
Her eyes narrowed on him before she turned to glare at her siblings and then slowly to her mother. Her mother was going to let him stay? Slowly the snarls subsided her chest heaving, she wouldn't fight her mother. Her mother and her alpha were perhaps the only two wolves in the world Agrona refused to fight. She loved them, felt loyalty for them...but now. Why was her mother bringing in this stranger? Now the den was soiled too...she would find her own safe spot...and wait...wait. She finally turned her vicious glare back onto Reaumer she was too small still...but in her mind she sized him up. She wouldn't be small forever...and if he tried to get close again...Her lips lifted again towards him in a silent snarl.
With that she stalked out of the den growling as the sun warmed her dark fur. She wasn't going to watch that stranger invade her safe place, no she would make a new safe place.
