Salvia divinorum, Diviner's Sage, Seer's Sage, whatever you want to call it. Have any of you had experience with using salvia, either in recreational or spiritual pursuits? I'm considering experimenting with salvia as an aid to out of body experience or astral projection, but I'm doing lots of research about the topic before I commit to it. So thoughts, opinions, experiences, why I shouldn't do it, etc. would be much appreciated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvia_divinorum

I can honestly say I have never heard of this before! It sounds a bit off to me but is highly interesting.
It sounds very much like getting high in order to talk to the spirits. Pretty much all plants used like this are highly dangerous and the chances of something going wrong are very high. It's the same when using any drug.
I would warn against using it.

Dangerous for what reasons? As far as psychoactive substances go, from what I've read, salvia is relatively safe as far as physical side effects.

Using any sort of herb or plant can have side effects and does not have the same effect on everyone all the time. For example you could use it once and everything goes to plan, no side effects and you are able to project. The next time you try it thought it could get wrong and leave you feeling very ill. In small doses everything is relatively safe but our bodies build up defences against things and each time you would need a higher dosage to get the results you want. This can easily lead to overdoses and worst side effects. Drugs can also build up in our systems and cause problems much later in life.

It is a powerful hallucinagen, but isn't scientifically considered a narcotic because it hasn't been proven to be addictive or terribly harmful (like opiates). However, just because it might not be toxic DOES NOT MEAN that you should use Salvia Divinorum. If the acquisition, possession, and use of Salvia Divinorum is legal in your state, I would strictly advise minors NOT to use it. First time users should only partake of Diviner's Sage with an "expert" or even with someone who is a member of a spiritual organization who use this regularly in their rituals. I do believe that anyone who uses Salvia Divinorum legally should have someone sober to supervise. Please, if you do use it, do so responsibly.

Well, scientists might feel differently in another ten years. For right now, it's best to utilize this substance responsibly.

The main point of this thread was to discover if anyone else had experience with it in order to help me make my decision. For the record, salvia divinorum is not illegal in my state (yet) and I'm not a minor. As I'm only looking for an aid to kind of jumpstart my experience, I'm also working with binaural beats, which I consider to be a better method than resorting to salvia. I'd rather not resort to a substance at all.

I have never tried Salvia but was the "sober" person who stood over two friends who were trying to raise their conscienceness. One wanted to try to contact her spirit guide, the other wanted to contact ghosts! Both parties had different results... the first (who wanted to contact ghosts) was so excited over a wrinkled paper bag, he claimed it was "holy" and he wanted to show it to God. The second person (who wanted to contacxt her Spirit Gide) had no luck with anything. She told him he was crazy and remained serious through it all. The time from smoking it till they were back to themselves was approximately 15 minutes with no real results for any of our tests.

O.o....that makes it sound like the salvia that my brother got was fake. I never used it and I don't think I ever will.

Use of S. Divinorum is illegal in my state, therefore I haven't tried it.. probably wouldn't outside of observing ceremonial uses.

I have used it as it is legal where I live and you can pick it up at certain tobacco shops.
One thing you have to remember is that you have to be in a place where you're comfortable, and I mean completely. How you feel about the place will have an effect on the experience. You also have to be relaxed, think good thoughts, and make sure you have someone you trust watch over you to make sure you don't hurt yourself or break furniture.
You do smoke it, so it can cause the usual damage that smoking anything does. It really is not as toxic, and I have no dependence/craving for it since I did it.
You also have to realize that some people will not react to it as strongly as others. I'd take one hit and be gone for a good 5 minutes. That same stuff didn't even make one of my friends feel dizzy. People also have completely different reactions to it. I felt several different physical sensations (like the feeling of a cool breeze over my skin) while my sister actually cannot stand the way it makes her feel because it makes her skin hurt.
Start out with a lower strength to see how it affects you. If you get nothing, up the strength slightly. Slightly.
My experience was fun, though. I was my first time on a pretty low strength.
I couldn't see myself using it for a spiritual purpose as I could not really concentrate on anything hard enough to stop laughing my a** off. I laughed....... A LOT. The things I saw were really neat though. But afterwards you feel pretty good, and you will sleep very well that night. Oh yes. That was the best sleep I've had in a while.

Smoking isn't the only way to use salvia. I had actually planned on using the traditional method that the natives use. In the event I decided to use it, I was going to get basic dried leaves, no "x" anything strength, and then chew a quid of it per the instructions I got from the salvia user's guidelines or whatever that document is floating around. But I've moved away from this interest since then. I feel I should pursue other methods first.
