Silas moved through the falling snow easily, the sky was overcast and gray as it usually was and he was out patrolling again. Not that he had a specific territory of the north that was his, but it never hurt to patrol the area around his den, which was only a small cave in the side of a small cliff but it was better then nothing. Especially when the sky opened like it was today and put down an even thicker layering of snow over the lands.
The male helix was barely shivering in the cold, well use to it by now. He had lived in the north for most of his life so the weather rarely affected him. A lone bird flew overhead, battling the wind which brought with it thickening snow. Silas lifted his head, his dark colours easy to see in the white landscape. He snapped his jaws at the bird without real interest to catch it, watching it squawk and fly away. A dark chuckle formed in his throat as he continued his patrol.

Ashy plunged into a heap of snow, hoping that it was a snowdrift instead of another rock. The snow had always brought out her puppy-ish side. She didn't mind the cold; it was nice to be away from warmth for a while. So focused in covering her pelt with the cold snow, she didn't care much to pick up scents, even though she was in another alliance's territory. She loved snow, and hardly ever got to see it! Suddenly, a bird broke the silence as it flew, rather close to the ground, past her. The young female Helix flicked her tail up and ran swiftly after it; with every intent to eat it. Though it was more of an OCD thing, she was determined to get that bird! Emerging from the trees into a small clearing, she was oblivious to the other Helix in the area; that bird who she thought would make a good addition to her stomach held all of her attention. Then it flew higher, and though Ashy jumped for, it escaped her hungry jaws. Falling back to the snow-covered ground gracelessly and in a heap, she looked around to see a black and red wolf wandering around. Oh no... she didn't like others.

It was the squwak of the bird flying back towards him that caught his attention first, glancing over almost lazily to see what had sent it fluttering like it was. He tensed instantly at the sight of the other helix, a young adolescent but she could still be dangerous. Watching her leap, and miss, the bird, falling into a graceless heap in the snow, he snorted. She obviously wasn't that experienced with hunting birds, so she musten be from the northern territory. Food was scarce in the north and the helixes which inhabited it had to be strong hunters, else they'd starve.

Silas moved towards the other helix, eyes narrowed in caution. He paused not far from the other adolescent, eyeing her thoroughly. He growled as he spotted something.
What do you think you're doing?” He snarled, red eyes flashing dangerously. He looked threatening with the colours of his eyes and fur. His next statement ruined the scary factor however, “your fur is getting soaked! You will get sick if you continue to lie there in the snow. Get up!” He scowled at her, seemingly frustrated at her inability to stay dry in the snowy. His fur was slightly damp as well, but only because of the falling snow.

With her muzzle covered in snow after her game of chase, she instantly sensed another, stronger, and mistrustful presence about the area around her. Hackles rising, she dropped following the bird with her eyes and looked around. She hadn't been hungry, but was inclined to catch it; it didn't mater much that she didn't; she was skilled enough on land should she need food. This place didn't seem very abundant in that, however, though it did have snow; a wonder she loved very much! That's when she spotted the black and red helix coming her way, and she got to her feet swiftly, while staying respectfully low. She felt threatened, as he was glaring at her, before he growled, but she didn't want a fight. If he had attacked, she'd probably have to run, however, but her lips were peeled back and hackles pricked faintly; belly just a few inches from the ground, and tail pinned close to her.
"I was just trying to catch it...." She started gently, backing up a step. She wasn't much for having others in close quarters with her. His red eyes reminded her of those that tortured her as a pup, and her lips fell back over her teeth, ears pulling back. Then, he scolded her with familiar words, so she untensed a small bit and did as told. That's what...mother had always said. That brought back warm memories. "Sorry...I don't get to see snow a lot." She would have shook her fur dry, but was fearful of spraying him with droplets and further upsetting him on what must have been his territory. It was true, though; her fur was fairly soaked.

Silas watched her with his blood red eyes as she seemed to take notice of him, dropping into a defensive position that assured him that she thought of him as a threat. This thought made him scowl more, inwardly annoyed at his appearance which always seemed to scare people. Watching as she backed up a step, a respective if not submissive movement, he evened the score by taking his own step back to make sure she didn't feel as crowded by him. Inclining his head as she obeyed him and stood up, he took in her soaked fur with obvious distaste.
That much is obvious,” he replied firmly but without anger, “you were worse then a pup seeing their first snow fall. I assume by that, that you are only visiting the snowlands?”
He gave her a blank look when she didn't move.
“Are you going to shake yourself dry or do you want to get sick?” He may have sounded a little cold but in his mind, this was him being mothery. His black fur was starting to glisten with the falling snow, which would make it almost impossible to stay dry.

Picking up the scowl growing when she'd submitted, one of her ears swiveled subtly in slight confusion. Usually others felt triumphant when she'd done so, not disdainful. She was grateful when he stepped back; feeling a little more at ease with him not as far into her bubble. The more he spoke, the more offended she began to feel, and the further Ashy's ears pulled back. She thought he was angry with her; after all, she had seemed to have intruded, and was now being scolded, rather harshly in her opinion. Not as harshly as she would have been had she not escaped, but....Shaking her head, Ashy was able to free herself from the momentary fearful memories. In truth, she was more embarrassed to be found by another - thus revealing her playful nature. At the insults (as she took them) her only response was a small eye-twitch, before agreeing with, "I'm from the East, but I wanted to see snow again." She caught his meaning with the blank look and nodded, surprised that's what he wanted for her to do. Bounding back a few feet so she wouldn't hit him with it, Ashy shook her entire body; mist warmed with her body heat spraying everywhere. When she had finished, the younger wolf trotted over to him, a little further away than where she had been standing before; a comfortable distance for her.

Silas watched in as he spoke, taking in her expression and body language. She was defensive again, and he was getting frustrated, not at her but at himself. He was not a kind helix but he was not deliberately cruel either and she seemed to be getting almost angry at him. He didn't see his words as particularly offensive or cruel, more as simple statements of facts.
Tilting his head to the side, a slightly childish gesture proving that although he was older then her, he was still only an adolescent.
“The East? Ah, I have traveled there myself. Beautiful bamboo forests, I must admit,” he mused, caught in a memory of being back in the warmer climate.
Watching as she moved backwards to not hit him with the flying off casts of snow and water, he himself shook off slightly to rid the snow from his back. His was only a tiny movement, barely noticeable except for the flakes which shot off of him. Momentarily surprised when she trotted back towards him, though not as close as before, he eyed her.
Do you have a travel companion? The North can be a dangerous place for strangers, many helixes are rife with desperation here.”

She noticed the greater tenseness in the air, but she really couldn't help being on her guard. Everyone that had gotten close to her always ended up betraying her, or worse. And she'd been beaten so much before, that paranoia was just a part of her nature; fear etched into her brain. Although she was mostly on edge, Ashy was a hot-headed helix, and took simple things in the worst way possible. She had thought he was an adult at first, not used to seeing other helixes at all, until his body language suggested otherwise, and she was thankful for that. Ashy nodded in response, smiling slightly at the compliment; if only about her residence.
Taking note of the surprise in his face when she'd trotted back, she flicked an ear absently in confusion. The confusion soon turned to agitation once more; even though she was speaking with him, the young helix didn't like being inspected. "I've never needed one." She replied calmly, sounding a bit too sure of her own ability. She'd never thought to be approached by anyone was it was; and liked to think that if something did ever happen, she was tough enough to handle herself. The casual conversation and self-confidence caused her to ease up; still respectful, but no longer on the defensive...visibly. She wondered what he had meant by 'desperation' but decided against asking stupid questions. "Thanks. I'll keep that in mind," she stated, but showed no signs of leaving right that moment; hoping he'd elaborate, or tell her more information on how to survive. Ashy was reluctant to have another with her on her wanderings; she couldn't be herself if someone else was watching, to scold her for her behavior.

Silas watched the young helix smile at his faint compliment, despite it was nothing to do with her personally, rather the lands she had chosen as her home. She was a strange creature, he decided, she went from tense to more relaxed, and back to tense in only a few moments. It made him curious, why was she so defensive? Knowing it was outright rude to ask, he ignored his curiosity for the moment. “You may not have needed one before, but in the North you need to watch your back, a companion is the easiest way.” Of course, it wasn't absolutely needed, as Silas himself had never traveled with companions, older then his pups of course but the female didn't know that. Silas had fought hard to become a resident in the north, each and every scar marring his body was proof of his residence. He was rarely bothered now, most knew to avoid him.
You are new to the area and those who live here dislike strangers and visitors,” he said, flicking his tail as he glanced around. There was no fear of a helix approaching them where they were though, as it was inside Silas' territory. “There is barely enough food for long term residence, let alone helixes who are simply passing through.” He eyed her again, eyes glancing at bold scars which crossed her back. He didn't let his gaze linger though, returning to her face as though he barely noticed them. “Try not to cross into the territory of a helix you don't know.

Ashy knew she was being too defensive, but she had a bad feeling about being around another creature for too long. All of them had always betrayed her, or outright left...not to mention being beaten, for absolutely nothing at any given time. In truth, she had once had someone to travel with, but lost him a long time ago....Heck, she couldn't even remember what he looked like. She liked to think she was independent enough not to need him anymore, though - if she wasn't she'd already be dead. "I'm already watching my back." She replied, a blurred image of her father scenting her permanent territory flashing through her mind. A shiver ran itself along her spine, and she felt herself grow cold. In reality, this was due to her soggy fur, but she wasn't aware of it. "But, thanks for the advice." the young, ash-freckled helix looked off to the side as if she was going to go off somewhere, before Silas spoke again. "I see....but I don't eat much. I'm usually always on the move - they shouldn't mind me. I'll probably be out already by sunrise...." She mused, hoping she'd have the energy, and focus, to keep moving for the rest of the day."Will do...speaking of...Sorry." It had just occurred to her, that he was so lax because he knew nothing could get him here; it was his territory, and she should have smelt it before going in hot pursuit of that bird. Lowering her tail so that it was somewhat underneath her and bowing her head, pulling her ears back as well, she showed submission for intruding. "I should be on my way.." with that, Ashy turned to leave, glancing back every so often to make sure he was not going to strike...

Silas eyed the younger helix with an interested eye, she seemed eager to leave and he doubted whether he would bother to stop her. If she wanted to be somewhere else, it was not up to him to make her hang around longer. She seemed out of sorts, as if she was lost in memories. “You are welcome,” he replied when she thanked him, but he had a feeling she would not take heed of his advice. She was a loner, that much was plainly obvious. At least he had warned her though, whether she paid attention to it was up to her.
He scoffed when she apologize, becoming submissive because of her position on his territory. “You are welcome on my land, as is any helix who does not pose a threat to myself or those who seek sanctuary,” he said, and it was true. He had never turned away a helix and he never intended too. “If you want to leave, do not let me stop you, but know you are welcome here if you need it,” he said, waiting for her to make her decision. If she left, he would continue on his way, if she stayed then he would probably still continue on his way, only he would have a companion as well.

Ashy knew that the longer she stayed here, the closer she'd be to being exposed, and the more helixes she'd potentially endanger because of it. She also had no idea where he was, or how to avoid him. So far staying on the move had proved useful - the world was big...at least, she hoped so. Ashy was still just a pup in mind - forced to grow up to fast. She missed her Fa, but....didn't know what happened to him. As her mind traveled through her thoughts and reveled in her memories more quickly than she could dwell on one of them, she looked up at him while he scoffed. Slowly straightening her posture, Ashy looked at him with her tipped head completely horizontal - so much that an ear flopped over with it. Every other Helix she'd met was territorial - but he...He's a weird one, all right. She decided. The word sanctuary caught her ears, and the young helix perked up her ears, wondering if he really was that accepting. Such kindness...she'd never seen it before - especially not to her. Ashy was baffled, to say the least as she just continued to give him an empty stare. Say something! she urged herself, "Umm...Thank you? No one's actually offered that before..." it was clear she didn't know how to react. "I actually would like to take a rest for the night." She offered him up a small smile "Plus, the snow's wonderful. Thank you for letting me stay, ...um..." She searched for a name, but couldn't place one. After a moment of thought, she looked at him hopefully - would he give her something to call him?

Silas watched in faint amusement as her head tipped until it was almost completely horizontal, resting the urge to laugh a little. It was a strange sight to see, and it usually wasn't seen on anyone older then a pup but it suited her. Despite she wasn't that much younger then he was.
Shifting a little in curiosity when he only received a blank stare in return of his words. Had he insulted her? But no, she didn't seem insulted. Merely...utterly confused. He was curious, what was so confusing about his words? He had simply been honest. She was welcomed, despite being defensive, she showed no signs of true aggressiveness.
“Most helixes won't offer sanctuary any longer,” he said, sounding a little disgusted, “yet there are many who need it.” he shook his head in annoyance before glancing back at her. “Of course, you are welcome for the night.” He was a little surprised to see the small smile on her face, but returned it with one of his own, the smile looking out of place on his face. “Silas,” he said, when she paused. “I am called Silas, and you are?” He said, realising they hadn't exchanged names.

PostPosted: Tue Oct 27, 2009 12:46 pm

Noticing finally that she was looking at him sideways when his form registered skewed in her brain, she looked back at him normally, and nodded her head, noting that she'd listened to what he had said. "Most Helixes won't share their land, even for a short time...so I'm pretty baffled." Ashy admitted as she trotted gently forward to follow him, a faint chuckle to hide her scorn at those who had tried to attack her for merely passing through.
"Silas." Ashy repeated, for memory. "I'm Ashy." A soft glare made itself apparent on her face, should the new helix decide to make fun of that. Others had in the past, and she was not about to deal with another - even if she knew she'd be out-matched in every respect. The glare soon dissipated as she remembered the kindness that he had paid her on this very first meeting. She couldn't understand his kindness - how did he know she wouldn't betray him, or bring him harm? He said himself food is scarce, and that goes hand in hand with land. Not that she intended to cause a ruckus, but...It was all so confusing.

Silas snorted, unable to help himself. “Most helixes are idiots,” he retorted without thinking, before pausing. That could be an insult to her, so he added, “it is foolish to be greedy in a land like this. It will only result in horrors for those who live here.” He began to walk once more, not fast enough that he could be running away but he was leading her. He needed to check his boundaries, then he would walk her to the den.
He nodded when she repeated his name, before repeating hers, “Ashy.” It was an odd name. Glancing back at her, disregarding the glare on her face. It did suit her, in a way. “It is a nice name.” He said simply. It was said flatly and simply. From anyone else, it would have been counted as a compliment. From Silas, it just sounded like he was declaring a fact.
Silas turned into his territory once he reached the edge of his boundaries. There had been no other helixes scent near his borders, other then Ashy's. Good. He disliked multiple guests, they always made too much nose.
I'll walk you to the den,” Silas said, slowing his pace so that Ashy could walk beside him if she wanted. “It will be warmer there.” Giving her a sideways look, a slight twist formed a tiny smirk, “and more snow to play in.”
