Has anyone had any really bad experiences with clients? (No name dropping please) What did you learn from your experience? Any advice on how to avoid such situations/ handle them with the least amount of headache possible?
I don't have any... serious stories myself, but recently I came across one bizarre art request (posted in Art Discussion xp ). This guy (let's call him Bob) was asking for avatar art. Here's the weird part: 1) Bob specifically asks the artist not put their own signature on the image, and 2) instead of the artist's signature, the artist must put "by Bob" somewhere on the image.
What... the... hell? burning_eyes

rice saysthat sounds a bit iffy, a question you should ask before hand is what is the picture being used for? i have couple of commissioners always asking to create a oc for them and their free use afterwards. but none of them ever asked to put their names on it. you should ask why should the art have by bob on the image? this is another reason when people work for companies they should really read their contracts more because a lot of companies can take your work or creation and claim it as their own because of the contract stating they own everything you do (basically owning your soul).
all the commissioners i had was great, not picky and always give me artistic freedom. if you're taking commissions you should always ask questions like you would in a interview for a job. <333

I agree with !2ice. <3
I think most commission horror stories come from not asking enough questions before hand or not spelling out things clearly for your commissioner.
=3
I haven't had anything but good experiences on Gaia as far as commissions (unless you count all the begging for free art or random, weird offers for full body, color avatar art for like...3k or something.) XD But...I don't really do many Gaia commissions either just here and there when I want to buy something expensive. ^_^

Rice: It's not just iffy, it's plain stupid if you ask me. XD No way in hell I'd draw anything for that guy. I'm pretty sure he wants to show it off to his friends saying "look what I drew!" Or even worse, use it to lure commissioners.
Angela: oh man, I totally know what you mean about people begging for free art or offering unreasonably low. X_x

I only have one gripe.
I was making these chibis and asking that people make up cute, interesting poses cause I had a lot of fun drawing them. They were only 1k, so I got a different group of commissioners than I would with higher prices.
Generally, they were great, but one guy started picking out things that were "wrong" after I posted his picture.
a quote where I blew off some steam to some friends:KotokoPlum this is the picture I made him.
o1. full moon. okay I can take that. I switch it and voila.
o2. legs are crossed. (okay, your pose wasn't even close to "awesome". I took artistic license.) o3. swords are supposed to be on opposite hands (they are on the ground.) o4. should be looking up at the moon. (THE ********? HE IS.)
this is all for what? 5k. I do not curse often at all. like, never ever. but this just gets me.
-needed to vent-
I just blew up at him and told him to cancel the trade and leave me alone.
he ended up apologizing, but I was still kinda pissed at him.
andandand... BY BOB

I always ask, and show the "skecth" and ask for.... mmm complainigs and so. raraely there are things to correct but still.
mm just once P: I was doing like an sketch and after been so close to finish it - he/she told me that the oc - was a guy not a girl.
O_O I was like REAAAALLY? XD, now for SURE I ask for background story and personality descripcion ^_^ and more stuff. P:

Really, i haven't had any really bad experiences with commissions b4~ but Auctions on the other hand...I really don't like it when ppl bid just to get the freebies and bail out at the end~ It actually happened to 2 or 3 of my auctionsD=
But other than that its the begging for art thing that isn't too pleasant*x*

I am not an artist, but I have had one REALLY bad experience commissioning an artist. I ordered from his shop, and the samples he had up were REALLY good. When I got my art, which cost me almost 200k, it was NOTHING like the samples that were displayed. When I asked about it, he said that the samples he had up were of the favorite pieces he's done, not what he was selling. When I told him I wasn't paying for it, he started making things up about me, trying to threaten me. For example, he said he has heard of me in the art forums a lot, and that I am known for scamming artists all the time, which is COMPLETELY untrue. He even went as far as to tell me " It was your decision to commission me at my set price, and you should have known the risks in it. ". After this, I got a moderator involved, and she posted in the shop saying that the samples need to match what is being sold. After she left, all of the artists in the shop started bashing on me, and I was blacklisted. neutral
This is the piece I ended up getting: http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/oo_orange_oo/07wBG.png
After that happened, I had no motivation or want to commission another artist for a long time. It took about three months before I trusted artists enough to order from them [no offense to you artists out there]. It just bugs the crap out of me too to know that my name is on a blacklist in the R&C, because I stopped an artist from scamming me.

I had a few bad ones. Mostly on Gaia. This person wanted the style I gave as the example. When I showed that person their outline of that same type of style... they decide it's not worth the gold. After that.. the person cancels the trade! I basically just wasted my time drawing them the outline, and just dealing with them in general.
Plus, it's annoying when people are telling me what they want to order, and type in poor grammar (chat speak) or with a lot of spelling errors. Spelling errors as in you don't even know what it says.

So glad they brought the "My guilds" link back. (If it has been around since the last header and footer change then i had no idea where it was. x.x )
I've learned that i can't take on to much at one time and i have to work fast to get the art done. If i don't finish it in a reasonable amount of time then its free. I don't have any bad stories to tell since i usually am the commissioner.
rofl @ KotokoPlum's drawing by Bob That bob story is just crazy though. xd Its so unbeleivable for someone to ask for art and request that "by (their name)" be put on it. I recently commissioned an artist and they gave me a version of the picture without anything on it so i asked for a version that had text saying "Commission for AmaiNeiko by (Artists name here)" That way if i used it as a reference someone can't see it as easily and put "by (their name)" on it and steal it as their own work. (they probably still could but not as easily sweatdrop )
That really sucks Ezra. sad

rice says@erza if thats the case the artist need to put that up front saying its different than the samples posted like a slightly simpler piece, if not thats his fault for the inconsistency of his work. i've seen that a lot on gaia and i don't know how artists get away with that halfass s**t.... if i made something i know its halfed a** i would make a new one that i'm proud of... i did that a lot hahaha alot of people know if i don't like a commission i did for them i do another one just to make it up for the half a** piece.
as for the artists blacklisting thats bs those artists need to mind their own business and doesn't deserve to be artists at all if they can't even see through that bs.

@!2ice~ Yeah, the whole thing really sucked. Nothing was ever resolved either. I still get upset if I go back to the thread and re-read everything, or go through my savebox to look through certain messages. It was a year ago, but it still sucked.

i've had a disappearing client once but he showed up about 4 months later ^^; so i'm not sure if that counts... i usually just make people pay ahead of time and wait for it... dunno if that's how u guys do it, but i'd love some tips on how to run the process.
