it is a bit of a change, I won't lie.... but if you practice a little bit you can totally get the hang of it. Pretty much it will change how your lips feel against the mouth piece and how you buzz, so it will be strange at first. Just don't get discouraged. biggrin

Ahh braces. I remember going through this in middle school. I played trumpet too. For me, getting used to playing with braces was not that hard to adjust too. When you first start I would recommend putting wax on the upper part of your braces when you play. Don't get too used to playing with wax though cause you may not always have it. It's just a crutch so you don't end up cutting your lips too badly. Also, when you get your braces tightened (I got mine done once a month) talk to your band director and tell him you won't be playing your best that day because quite honestly it smarts when you get em tightened and try to play. Don't worry your BD will understand. In the case of playing, you'll hopefully adjust rather quickly to playing with them, it would help if you're a practicer. The most difficult part for me when I had braces was getting them off and then playing. It was really hard to adjust back to before the braces because I got so used to the spacing (teeth, braces, mouthpiece). And to this day I still play with a weird embrochure because I didn't take the time to relearn with a good embrochure. But it hasnt really affected me as a player because I'm a lead trumpet in marching band and play 1st in jazz and symphonic.
Hope that helped! biggrin

The mouthpiece is bigger and less painful.

I know what you're gonna go through, i've been there. like Lycan of the flame said practice the position of the mouth piece against your lips. Your range of notes will be shorten like when you first played trumpet remember when you could barley hit most of the notes, well thats what your gonna go through. What i did was play long tones, that helped me alot in a couple weeks i played like i did b4 braces. good luck

Oh, the fun of braces. =)
Yeah, I actually found it a little harder to play with wax on mine, because it felt like I had food stuck in my teeth. After a week or so your lips will get used to the braces, and then it's not really too difficult. You'll go through the same change again when you have to get them off, though. neutral
Good luck!

If you're marching, DO NOT PLAY BARITONE. It's ungodly heavy. So, the mouthpiece size of a baritone isn't really that much better for braces, I play trombone and it hurts like a ******** to play without wax. (Probably because I'm on 1st so I get to play high F's and such.) Tuba, however, is comfortable with braces (at least for me) so if you could get away with playing tuba or sousa you'd be set.

Please don't do that next time you correct someone, thank you. Some schools don't use baritones either. The heaviest instrument that my school uses is the sousaphone. As for playing trumpet with braces, I found this thread helpful since I'm getting braces once all of my permanent teeth are in. I'm not that young, just behind on losing my teeth. Anyway, those who've posted advice on playing trumpet with braces, thank you smile

When I had braces, it didn't really affect my playing...but I played clarinet. razz
Don't worry, though, I've had friends play trumpet/brass with braces on. It takes some definite getting used to, and you'll probably have to put in some extra practice time, but it shouldn't affect your sound in the long run.

Braces with the trumpet suck. But you will get used to it. You lips with grow caleses of a sort. But for me, I found that my lips got a lot stronger because of my braces.
