User ImageMawu had not taken her mate leaving very well. Koi had offered her as much comfort as she could and Liza had tried his best to make her smile, but the only thing that came close to making her happy was her cubs. She hadn't felt much in the mood to wander outside the den area, so she was laying in the little glen where her children were born in, her black form on its side, breathing quietly. The cubs were starting to be old enough to be on their own, as long as they stayed around the clan area. Mawu wasn't really strict about it now, especially her dark daughter. She seemed to have itchy feet.

User ImageFour little paws scurried into the den. Kissy scampered into the den, sweet smells burning her nose as she lollopped to her mother, carrying a bouquet of beautiful flowers in her tiny mouth, petals sprinkling on the ground. Some blue, some gold, some speckled with red. She hopped up on her back legs and urgently nudged her mother’s backside with her front paws. “MMMMM! MMMM!” she mumbled urgently, afraid to let her flowers drop.

It was a strange time in the young lioness’s life. She sometimes wished her father would just go away and live with the other males, where he belonged. He was a bother, made her sisters angry, and at the time she thought no one would miss him, least of all herself. Now that he was gone she wished he would come back. Her mother was so unhappy without him. Kissy felt unhappy, too. And yet she hated him, hated him more than ever. If Vestip ever came back she couldn’t be sure if she’d feel relieved or furious.

Mawu was busy trying to just make her brain a blank slate, as dark as the sky and as her pelt. She was not aware of her dark daughter approaching. When she felt he tapping on her rump, she sort of ignored it until her little one murmered to her. She lifted her head, her lilac eyes half lidded. She looked down to her flowery daughter who seemed to be adamant about not losing one petal. She smiled, her eyes showing her compassion for her cubs. "Hello baby... what have you got there?" She asked, her voice quiet and collected. Mawu was sad, perhaps because she had actually loved that fool of a male, and told him just before he left. She felt guilty about it and it had started a chain of reaction in her mind. "Where on earth did you find those pretty flowers darling?" She asked, sitting up to look at her lovely green eyes baby.

Kissy’s green eyes brightened. “MMMM-mmm-mm-MMM-MMMMM! MMM-mmm… mmm…” Her little eyebrows crinkled and her tail bristled. Before she could get a hold of herself she was bucked by a sharp sneeze. “Achoo!”

She opened her mouth and the flowers blasted out. They landed in a heap at her mother’s feet, some landing on her paws. Kissy sneezed again and sniffed, trying to get herself under control, but her sniffing only inhaled more of the pollen covering her nose. “I… I…” She stiffened, one paw lifted into the air, and her tail involuntarily curled into a Q. “Achoo! Ah-ah achoo!”

Mawu could not help but giggle as her daughters nose burst forth a sneeze and all the lovely flowers scattered everywhere. She smiled, looking down at the petals on her dark paws. If only she could be as bright as those petals. Her heart dropped slightly at this thought, but she could not help but smile again as another fit of sneezing commenced. "Ooh, sweety... sweet Kissy-come here!" She said, wrapping her paws around her daughter and pulling her over to start to clean the specks of pollen off from her dark muzzle.

“Maaaaw!” Kissy complained but did not struggle as her mother pulled her into her arms. When Mawu finished she pawed at her mother’s grey muzzle and gently nibbled her cheeks, then purring licked them. “Do you like your flowers, Mama?”

Mawu loved her cubs so dearly. Even if they had been Vestips cubs and that reminded her that-she was alone again. She looked down to the lovely winged sweety and smiled, rubbing her cheek against her daughters own black ones. "Of course darling I do... they are so lovely and bright.. just like grandma and grandpa!" She said, her lilac eyes soft and serene. "You must have had to look pretty hard to find them?!"

Kissy grinned. She knew she should be humble, but she felt so happy to have made Mama smile that she decided, maybe this time, the gods wouldn’t care if she acted proud. “It wasn’t that hard. I’m good at finding pretty things. The hard part was finding the extra pretty ones.”

Mawu smiled down at her little darling and could not help but feel her heart swell at the sight of her. She nodded, knowing all to well how hard it was to find the pretty ones, without losing them. She felt her heart drop for a moment, sadness seeping into her veins. She had to keep her focus on her child. "Well I am grateful that you thought of me and found them" She bent her nose and pressed it against the lose petals.

She lifted her head, with pretty speckles of the flowers against her dark nose. She made an 'uh oh' face and crossed her eyes. "Oh no!"

Seeing her mother’s silly face, Kissy giggled madly. She had a manic laugh, the kind of laugh that loves itself so much that it leaps and dances and cartwheels through the air, squawking and melodious, the kind of laugh that made grown-ups flinch and cubs snicker. But mothers love this laugh, because they know a secret that turns laughter into music. All laughter sounds as a melody to a mother who sees her baby smile.

“Funny face!” Kissy squealed, reaching up to brush the flowers from her mama’s nose. She looked her in the eyes with a big grin. “How’d you do that? I wanna make silly faces, too!”

She tried to cross her eyes. Her bright green eyes moved, her nose twitched and made all sorts of silly faces, but no matter what she tried she couldn’t get her eyes to cross.

Mawu chuckled at her cubs response to her actions. There was something about being a mother that caught in Mawu's throat and tasted sweet, like rain water. She dipped her head and shook the remaining petals from her nose. "Well, first you make all the faces you can into one. Happy faces and sad faces and every face in between. You then mix them up and there you go!"

She screwed up her eyes and stuck out her tongue, making noises all the while. She chuckled at her daughters attempt at making a face and poked her nose with her own. "Keep trying sweetling. You will figure it out!"

“How can… how can I tell if I’m doing it if I can’t see my own face?” She tried again. After a few tries she grew bored and gave up. She curled up against her mother’s chest. “Mama, are you happy now?”

Mawu looked down at her cub and with a beaming grin lifted her a bit and brought her even closer to her chest, nestling her head over her softly. She was content with her cubs, content with her life but not content with the absence of Vestip... why was she so connected to him? She did say she loved him but-did she even mean it?

She looked down at her cub and smiling. "As long as my babies are with me... yes." She said softly

“I’ll stay with you, mama. And I’ll make sure I bring our family lots of honor so when we come back we’ll all look just like gramma Koi,” Kissy purred. She had no intention of leaving her pride and family like her father.

Mawu smiled down at her cub and sighed, content to lay with her and smell her fur and breath in the jungle air. She pressed her cheek against her cubs fur, feeling the coolness of it. Her purple eyes blinked off into the distance, not really seeing anything. She smiled softly, before a yawn cracked her muzzle.

"Want to sleep with me sweety?" She asked, pressing against her a bit more. She adjusted her body, her tail curling around her back paws.

Kissy didn’t like to take naps. She found it hard to sleep most of the time and would much rather be out exploring in the dark. The darkness frightened her a little bit, which was exactly why she wanted to explore. Maybe when she was older.

But she had spent all afternoon running all over her clan and picking up flowers for Mawu. Her mother’s warmth made her want to relax and curl up in her fur. The mention of sleep left a sour taste in her mouth. If she wanted to move she would have politely declined. Mawu’s yawn proved contagious. “Alright. I am a little tired.”

Mawu smiled and nuzzled her cub. She knew that little Kissy was a bit of a busy body and didn't like to snuggle down with the others and take a good sleep. She smiled down at the cub, so grateful that she had not just birthed only those of higher rank... these black cubs were a bane and a beauty. She smiled, nuzzling herself against her.

"Good. Mommy wants to sleep with you against her chest.... just for a little while..." She said softly before starting to fall asleep.
