Amie yawned widely, her back resting against the stone wall. The sun was just setting, and darkness was beginning to fill the street. Street lamps flashed as they came to life, filling the empty darkness with pinpricks of yellow light. Amelia couldn't help but sigh as her stomach growled hungrily. Time to look for something good to eat.
She stepped back onto the sidewalk, her board strapped to her back, and out of the way while she moved. Following her nose led her to a 24 hour hotdog and hamburger joint. It smelled delirious as well as delicious. Who couldn't like big, greasy burgers at night? Amie was particularly pleased as she settled outside after ordering a large meal with the bit of cash she had in her pocket. "Mmmmm...." It was the easy response for someone who was chowing with a mouthful of food.

Kristof had decided that tonight James was allowed to go out on his own. Everyone needed escape, he said, even the freaks. James had left, not quite knowing where to go, and simply wandered aimlessly in the dark, hugging himself. He got strange looks, of course. That wasn't new. He tried to avoid them.
He heard a female voice not far off, but staring at the pavement meant he couldn't see just who it was. It didn't matter. They would just stare like everyone else.
As he passed, he paused to snap a crumpled cola can into his mouth, crunching hard and swallowing almost painfully.

Amie looked up from her grease-ridden food at the sound of a metallic crunch. She saw the guy, probably not much older then she was. And he was eating... a can? That couldn't be good for the digestion. With little hesitation, she called out to him, "Yo! Come over here! Don't be eating cans, you don't know where they've been. I'll share my food of death if you want." She said with a slight cat grin.
She waved a fry at him, showing that she had the food. Heck, she had bought a three-course meal from the place. It tasted good, and she'd burn it off later skating.

At the first yelp, James jumped and shrank back into himself, eyes both rolling up to look at the cat-girl on the street. When the fry began to wave, though, his eyes followed it, ticking back and forth, back and forth. He approached slowly, cautiously, still holding himself.
Of course, he said nothing. There was nothing he could say that wouldn't make him sound either furiously retarded or near-mute, anyway! He simply shuffled closer, little by little. When he decided he was as close as he was going to get, he plopped down perhaps a foot and a half away, still eying the fry.

"Well, go ahead. It's made of potato and grease, it's not gonna bitecha." She said, flicking an ear. At the same time, her eyes looked him up and down. He was like her, a strange creature that would not normally exist. His eyes made her suspect... a chameleon. How cool! She scooted the paper plate toward him. "Here." She said, grinning slightly as she continued to munch on her burger.
Even though he seemed not to be the talking type, at least it was company.

James was not so savage when eating around other people, or at least people who were not Kristof. He picked up a fry awkwardly in chunky, misshapen fingers and popped it into his mouth. Potato and grease. Delicious! He would eat like this more often if he had a source of income!
He smiled at the girl unwittingly, and it was a strange, gruesome expression that showed off cracked teeth and bits of gooey tongue.

Amie laughed, and nodded. "See? Better then cans for sure, right?" She asked with a smile. She nudged the dish of fries closer to him with a movement of her tail while she focused upon finishing off the burger. As she snapped up the last bit of greased meat on a bun, she focused her attention upon the guy. "I'm Amie. We're not so different, are we?" She said with a motion of her hand.
Amie picked up a napkin and wiped the fur around her mouth free of slime and bits of food.

James continued to eat, his right eye focused on the plate. His left, however, slowly raised up to look at the girl. Not much different? He was a reptile, for God's sake! He gave a little shrug and, predictably, gave in to the urge to eat the empty, greasy plate when the fries were gone.
He smiled again, this time carefully. His lips didn't open, and his eyes fluttered away.

Amie stood up while the chameleon guy was busy and went back up to the counter to order more food for the two of them. She was still hungry, and the guy seemed hungry too. No harm, no foul. She ordered two more helpings of fries and some hamburgers. God, the prices at this place were amazing. She stuffed some fries in her mouth as she walked back over and sat next to the chameleon.
"Here's some more. It's no problem for me. What's your name, anyways?" She asked curiously. She didn't know many others who were strange looking like she was. It was kind of a relief.

James would have loved to have known sign language, but with 3 fingers, it really wasn't all that possible. Even then, so few people could understand it, what would be the use? When he spoke, his voice was rather muffled and made terrible slurping sounds, thanks to an ill-fitting tongue.
"James" came out more like "Jmmtsclh". He frowned at himself and once again drowned his sorrows in excessive amounts of food.

"Jimmy? James? Is it James? Oh, wonderful!" She exclaimed with a nod. Perhaps they could be friends! I mean, they certainly had things in common. They were animal-like, loved food, and seemed to enjoy a companionable silence. She was happy to say the least, at the fact she had someone to talk to, or rather she just talk, and he listen.
"It's a good name, you know."

James smacked his lips a little and licked them off. The food was good here. The plates, not so much, but it wasn't for the taste that he consumed them.
"Eimee," he said, trying to speak slowly, "itsch pitty name." It was hard to speak. So hard. He hated the way he sounded. In his head, he was a perfectly reasonable, logical, and intelligent being. When he spoke? Not so much.

It took a little effort to understand him, but once she got used to how he talked, it wasn't difficult. "Thank you, James." She said, quite happy with the compliment. She could understand the reason for it being so difficult for him to talk, what with having such a large tongue. But all in all, she found it interesting. "Do you live near here, or are you being like me and just wandering?" She wondered.
"I mean, not that it's a problem. I just wander around looking for good spots to laze or skate."

James chose to not respond immediately, and instead pointed down the street. He lived about 4 blocks down in a dim basement with another teenager who he sometimes thought was a full-grown man.
"Na' faw."

"Oh, you're lucky. I live on the other side of the city in a warehouse. Kinda rundown, but good enough." She said, popping another french fry into her mouth. She acted as if she had no care in the world. And this was true. She didn't care about much besides food, music and skating. Then again, she had no one to look after, nor anyone to look after her. It was her well-being and her world. She lived as she pleased. "Do you live alone, James? Or are you rooming with others..?" Her voice had taken on a slight distant tone, as if glimpsing into the past. She had been born this way. A cat creature with very little look at the law. She had no need of it, she lived by her own rules.
