Don't worry, it's normal to have difficulty with this kind of stuff this early in the season, and being a freshman and such. I've never had this problem (I've always been an extraordinary marcher and player) but just remember, every time your field commander's hands move, or every time the drumline clicks their sticks, that's a step. Usually, the problem is stepping off on the wrong foot. Step on your left, and if you're in 3/4 time, every other measure will feel wrong. Remember, even if the time changes, most of the time the beat stays the same, so just move your feet to that tempo.

Once you step off on your left, everything else is all about feeling the beat.
Really listen to the metronome, or someone clapping along, or count in your head as you march, it really helps.
When all else fails, ask your section leader or drum major to help. We're here to make things better. 3nodding

I stay on beat by feeling like my foot connects with the ground as the sound happens. If you happen to step off wrong, just fix it. I have a habit of counting my steps, even though I'm a vetran, it just keeps me doubly assured that I'm on step. Count them off by ones up until 8, or count only your left steps - you should have 4 between each yardline.
As for whether you are in the right place or wrong place... I've always been pretty good at knowing my spot. But when you get set in drill just figure out what formation you are in - a curve, or straight line, or whatever else - and adjust accordingly. Whichever side you dress to depends on your band.

There's always a few people who are "right-footed". It happens to a lot of people. Most (but not all) bands start on the left foot. You can practice that wherever you go. Whenever you start walking, make it on your left foot. Hopefully, you'll practice it enough it will become habit. As you're a freshman, and you haven't even started school yet (right?), you have every right to be confused. It usually takes partway through the season before freshmen really get the hang of things. Just hang in there, and as others have said, ask your section leader or the drum majors, if you don't get along with the section leader, if they'll help you out.

What circuits are you competing in, and what county is your school in? I probably wouldn't get to go against you, since my band is larger, but it's nice to know that marching band exists elsewhere in MD. xd
As for being confused...last year was horrible for me. When we first learned everything, I wanted to cry because I was so frustrated. Sometime by the second week of band camp and another time in october, things just started to click, and it was so much easier.

I'm a freshman too and I get confused. Thankfully, my BD has years of experience and puts the freshman by juniors and seniors so that they don't get confused as easily.
