In older day, young and older women wore corsets. There was no problem then, but nowadays, the age for a girl to wear a corset seems to be in slight debate. Some people think it doesn't mater what age you are and others say that a corset is meant for adults. I myself wear them and I'm 16. I think as long as your figure can hold one up and you are able to go the day having small breathing issues [that sounds really bad] then it should be perfectly fine.
Many people look at it as something sexual, but that's not necessarily the case at all.

I absolutely LOVE corsets! I'm 17 and wear them fairly often, as Ive only got 2 of them. They are a wee bit uncomfortable, but the lack of breath is worth it! Personally, I think that in any time period no one under about 14 should wear a real corset, as they've not yet matured enough to be able to handle them. ESPECIALLY since they've not yet finished growing, and a corset could cause problems/damage. I also think that no matter what your age, there is a certain point that corseting gets ridiculous.

There is NOTHING attractive about looking like THAT. lol

As much as I don't care what other people think of me, I can't stand being called a whore by people who do not even know me. Apparently you can only wear a corset if your a slut into bondage rolleyes and not to express your individuality or because you like the shape it gives you or the style of clothing you wear them with (Pirate, Victorian, etc.). People are dumb. ^-^

Yeah, I can see what you mean about the under 14 thing. I've thought about that, but at the same time, I think about myself. My body hasn't changed much since I was 13. I guess it might be different in other cases.

My mother tells me the same exact things. Whenever I look to by a corset, she always tells me that she doesn't want me walking around like a whore and so on. She even says something like that when I mention Lolita. which is another misunderstood fashion, might I add.

The lady in the picture looks like a doll O_o... That is ridiculous. Not only does it look weird and uncomfortable, but unhealthy too. Corsets are very beautiful and the results of one are nice too, but when ppl abuse them like that, that's just a big NO NO.

I like wearing corsets and bodices. What I don't like is people calling me "slut" or "whore" because I have fun wearing them.

I agree with waiting until you're a certain age before wearing them. I'd say wait until you're mostly done growing and are able to handle and wear them.

They can indeed be fun to wear and fun to accessorize. I'm working on making my own corsets right now.

I agree though, that woman just doesn't look right. She does look like a toy doll and with how tiny her waist is it isn't right. Not to sound disgusting but I'm afraid to ask what her body would look like without that corset on.

I'm interested in corsets. I like the way they look(they're great accessories!) I don't have any yet, but I'd like to get some.

I also agree with waiting til your older to avoide problems.

As for Corset Woman, I wonder how much she's damaged her internals doing that.

I personally don't like them flat out.

Same here. I remember in anatomy class learning about what organs were where and them being squished like that isn't good. A person needs a certain amount of calories in their diet so they don't go into starvation mode. If she eats very, very little she could be doing some bad damage to her body.

That's definately not good for your rib cage.

Wearing one for short periods of time shouldn't do any damage but long term...yow.

If you only wear them, like, lets say, 2 times a week, your organs have time to right themselves, though the cartlage connecting your ribs to your sternum may begin to fold, as has happened to me. I think it mostly depends on how far you take the corseting. That lady's ribs are destroyed forever. As for the eating, she has passed the point of the corset keeping her stomache flat- if you look at a side picture of her you can see that all her organd have shifted downward so much that she looks pregnant- so the corset is no longer restricting her whole torso, but rather just her ribs, so I dont think she has any problems with eating.

I cringe at the thought of what that lady looks like underneath the corset xp

While I don't mind traditional corsets, I think the faux ones are good in all cases. They don't cause health problems and they look just as attractive. However, if they are being used for form, there are bodices and such that are not so problematic as well.

I have a custom-made corset, and I find it quite comfortable to wear (I find that mass-produced/store-bought corsets give me blisters and the boning warps). It's great for when I'm dressing in period costume, but I don't wear it as a fashion statement anymore. I'm twiggy and flat-chested (A-cup), so the corset does almost nothing for my figure, and my boobs dissapear completely when I lace up! lol XD
Corsets do look amazing on women with fuller figures heart

However, I am personally against younger females wearing true corsets (anyone under 18 ). Even though teenage girls think that they've "stopped growing" by age 16, your body continues to grow until about age 25. I started wearing a true corset when I was 17, and even though it was custom fit to me and I didn't tight-lace, I do have some minor issues with my spine and ribs because of wearing it frequently.

Fake corsets or fashion bustiers are totally okay for everyday fashion or nightclubbing, depending on what you wear it with.

But keep in mind that the corset was originally an undergarment and can carry a bit of a risque/sexual/fetish flavour; if you're a minor and your parents take issue with you wearing your corset-like garment as a part of your outfit; do them a favour and stop wearing it, or work with them to arrange an outfit for it that they approve of.
(There are creeps out there; I met a few in my youth. Plus, for us average adults; seeing a "kid" in fetish wear is kinda icky.)

I think its all about the degree of lacing. I myself wear corsets often. I have been wearing them since I was 15 years old. Its all about how tigh you wear them. Lacing them in the "tight-lace" fashion is terribly , no matter what age. So if you lace it just untill it is snug and wear it for say only 3 hours at a time then it really isnt dangerous. Its when you "tight-lace" for more than 20 minuets. Tight-lancing is to get a corset much toosmall for you say 4 or more sizes small , and lace it untill it fits you. So dont be stupid about wearing one and they can actually e good for you. If happen to be large they are good to relieve the back pain associated with wearing a bra all the time. So in short I love them and wear them all the time.

A corset is an undergarment. Those who have issues with corset wearing are usually quick to point out that they make a person look like a promiscuous fetishist (though their usual words are slut/whore/freak, but those aren't nice words, are they?). If a corset is worn correctly, it will never be seen at all, because it will be worn under the clothing. Therefore, unless someone asks a corset wearer to bend over and pick something up, or in dance or fitness classes, no one will ever guess that's what they're wearing.

The other problem with corset wearing is the possible warping of rib bone and cartilage and the shifting of organs, along with spinal damage and breathing issues. This, too, can easily be corrected by wearing a properly fitting corset rather than tight-lacing. A proper corset should not shrink the waist by more than 4 inches at the very most, and 2 inches would be better. The main benefit of a corset is simply to smooth the existing shape, provide back and breast support, and do away with bra straps cutting into the shoulders -- not to create a whole new shape.

My corset-wearing credentials, if anyone needs to know: I don't wear corsets in daily life, but have worn them as part of historical costuming for theatrical productions. While wearing corsets I have been required to sing and dance energetically, and I didn't find myself having any problems with either breathing or flexibility, because the costumer knew what proper corset-fitting was all about.

I've worn one. It's more comfortable than one would think.

I really want to get one but what it comes down to is money. What would any of you say is the price of a good corset that won't wreak havoc on my internal organs too much?

I wear an underbust corset rather often... As I'm only an A cup, I don't think a regular corset could help me much, and I don't think I'd find it comfortable. I'd be willing to try, though.

Unfortunately, I'm not corset trained. I'm quite sure that young women actually used to alter their rib shape by use of corsets... As I have a large ribcage (I'm fairly certain it's due to genetics/my norwegian ancestors being mountain folk), I never really thought of wearing a laced corset due to the sheer discomfort and constriction of my undoubtedly large lungs.

I do love corsets though... And I would love to someday try wearing one. I just know I wouldn't be able to wear it for more than a couple of hours sweatdrop
