Okay, im an incoming freshman. My problem is that do you guys expect us to memorize ALL of the music we were given. I just find it very difficult because I have no idea how the music goes so i dont know where to start...i really need help..thanks
Oh, and i dont want to get into trouble just because i didnt memorize it..thanks im soo worried and freaked and im starting to get anxiety.

EDIT: What im talking about is by band camp, obviously for the shows and all i know i have to but i mean starting out, before i get into band camp. I start band camp on August 13. and im very freaked out because i only have one piece of musid memorized.
Oh my gosh, everybody thanks for helping. I talked to a friend who has friends who have been in band for a year. And my friend told me that I should try to play it and learn it and that its fine if i dont. I was just freaked because i was worried I'd get into trouble. So thanks everyone. :] 3nodding any more advice would be and is appreciated. :]

I know different bands have different stances on what music to memorize. Though normally the only stuff that needs to be memorized is the show music and any warmups. You may find the whole task a bit daunting, but it gets easier. I used to find that the easiest way to memorize the music would be to play it out a few times, then go section by section and try to play your part without looking at the score. Hope that helped

if you are confused about the rythm, look up the song on you tube and try to follow along with the music. or if ur band has a recording of it on thier website just check there. your best bet is youtube. lol, or do it the old fashion was and count it out. that can help with the memerization.

With my band, we usually need to have the music already given to us memorized. Have you tried playing it a lot? Like, as many times as possible, until you're sick of it? What really helps me memorize quickly is just play the song in my head over and over...even if I don't try to do that, I end up doing it subconsciously, anyway.

If you're still having trouble, try getting help from your section leader. They're there to help, anyway. :]

but the thing is i dont know how the music goes so i have no idea if im doing it right....

I promise it is easier than you think. I was so worried to memorize my music for band since we had to play it off one by one in front of everyone. All I did was play it over and over and over again and then slowly try to remember bits and pieces and then longer and longer. Try to memorize one bar, then maybe 2, then the phrase. It gets so much easier when you add the steps to it too, at least in my opnion.

We have to memorize all the stand tunes and our show. We don't have to have it memorized until the end of band camp, but I would have the show memorized by then if you can help it. I'm not sure about your band's policies, so you might want to see if you can get in contact with another member before bc starts.

As for memorizing them. You'll find that it is easyer than you fear. Just memorize them one measure at a time. Before you know it, with some diligence and patience, you will have it memorized. biggrin

It's really easy when you done memorizing your first piece of music. you just practice, play it again and again..and listen to a recording of the show music to help u, if u want to.
but, playing it again and again will help to memorize better. or say notes...
But, after your done memorizing ur first piece of music, u will have no problem memorizing music.:}

grab a writing utensil in another class and have the music with you,so when you have spare time you can practice,it happened me a lot freshman year.take the music section by section or have your section leader drill it into you.

Try asking your section leader, band director, or drum major(s) if you have any problems. They're there to help you, and they've been freshmen before so they understand your position. It's part of their job to help the ones that are confused!

Good luck with your season,

My band doesn't get the music over the summer to work on, so I don't have to have it memorized by band camp. The bad part about that is that we basically have to have it memorized in the first week of band camp. It's easist to take the music one measure at a time if you've never heard it before (or even if you have). Don't look at it as a huge piece of music, just in small pieces. If you can work on one section at a time without driving yourself crazy, then add a new piece to what you've already memorizerd, it usually helps.

I've found that memorizing a section, then playing it from memory (with the music turned around so you can't see it) really helps. If you've worked on a piece for a while, you'll know if you played it right or wrong. If it's right, turn the music back around and memorize another piece of it. If it was wrong, turn the music back and fix your mistake, then repeat this process.

Memorizing music gets much, much easier as the season goes on. If you're in another band (concert band, say), you'll find yourself memorizing the music just from running it so many times in a row. You'll do the same thing at band camp, and it's much easier to learn it with everyone else than by yourself. With the band, you can see how your part fits in the song, and it's a lot easier than trying to figure it out on your own.

Good luck to you!

We would only require music to be memorized when we started marching and playing that song. So the first tune was the end of band camp and the others sometime during the school year. If you said a large part of the band doesn't have music yet, I would think that means you are not expected to memorize it yet. You should definitely be able to play it, to the best of your abilities, because that will help a lot. If you can't find a recording, it might help to hear it played during band camp. I find that once I can sing my part, I memorize it almost instantly. So try to learn your part, and then when the rest of the band joins you, you'll be able to memorize it quickly.

You should check with some older band members and ask when music should be memorized. Check if they have found a recording, too.
