Well, I can, it's that I can't get myself to do so.

I think it's psychological 'cause I can practice when my parents aren't home.
But as soon as they come in the door, I immediately stop and can't start again.
Like...I'm afraid to make noise. Or to sound like I'm not perfect yet.
I don't know.

'cause all my life my mom has freaked out if I've ever made a sound. (IE: I'm downstairs, she's upstairs, I drop something, she flips out "WHAT WAS THAT?!")
So now my subconcious associates making loud noises with being accused/yelled at.

How do I get over this so I can practice again? There's about a month to band camp and I have music I need to memorize, and I can't count on weekends when my parents have a slight possibility of going out for a walk or something.
(Please don't just say 'just do it' or the like. I've already tried to just...practice while my mom is home, and it doesn't work. Even if she's outside.)

EDIT: I'm a percussionist. If I don't practice, my muscles forget how to do things. Which makes everything even worse. Because then I feel bad for not practicing but I still can't practice to make things better. x_x

Oh my dear.

I have this issue as well.
Though mine is a bit diffrent; my parent's hating band that is.

My solution was to play while they were gone {As you've been doing} and if possible to play outside.
Since yer a percussionist, perhaps play on yer pad in yer yard?
It won't disterb ze neighbor's. {Unless it's one of those hard pad's}
Also practicing at a friend's house is a good idea.
It can help you both improve, by human's natural drive to get better. |}

Those are my two options to ya.
I also would practice after school fer awhile, since I couldn't play at home.

I'll try to think of more things. Hope this helped somewhat. |O
Good luck. <33

I need to use my hard pad though because I can't hear my soft one to know if I'm playing right.
I don't care about my neighbors, lol. But my parents are nearly always outside. Oi.

That would be a good idea if any of the other percussionists actually liked me. They all think I'm either crazy, a b***h, too girly/wussy, etc.

I'd practice after school but I would be the only one who does and my mom picks me up from school so she'd be like 'WHY CAN'T YOU PRACTICE AT HOME? WE HAVE THAT BELL THING THAT YOU HAVEN'T USED IN AGES'
x_x

Thanks for trying, I just need to find a way to get over playing while my parents are home, lol.

well i play flute, but i have that same issue, and it's probably because of these two reasons: my parents don't like any sound produced by me, and 2. my mother has thrown and "dropped" my flute so many times and refuses to get it repaired (i don't have that kind of money) bleah. things are so hard >_<

gonk

I'm glad my parents don't hate band.

The only part of it my mom hates is that it takes up so much of my life from August to November XD

My parents actually like it when I practice but...I'm just being irrational x_x

    I have the same problem. Somehow I can get away with only practicing when nobody's home...

    Is it possible to practice in your band room or something? Some of our people have sectionals on monday nights, because that's when our director is there, so they can get into the band room.

Drum on something that doesn't make too much noise?
Practice rhythms with pencils on a table or something?

Just try to find a place in your house, shut the door, and ask your parents not to disturb you for a while.

My house is a quiet one too, but I got over it. Just get in the habit of practicing whenever you can and it'll be easier.
Practice helps make everything easier.

Try tapping beats with your palms on a table or somthing, with your mom around. I'd try to do little things in front of them, maybe even things that won't help you rplaying, just so you can get used to them listening. That's probably like no help at all, but it's all I can think of. sweatdrop

But I know what you mean. My mom works from 3:00 in the morning to like 4:00 or so in the afternoon. My stepdad leaves at 7:00 PM and gets home around 8:00 in the morning. So someone is almost always asleep. I had to get up with my mom so I could practice over the summer. xp

But I think you have a entirely differant problem. Does anyone in the band like you? I used to practice with people who play differant things all the time. Maybe that could help?

@Lilies: I can practice in the band room, but it'd just be weird. Nobody else in my band practices outside of class (or practice rooms/marching band/etc).

@Pie: Louder? lol. Everything is loud if you try to make it loud. If I had a snare drum I could probably make it sound about as loud as your sax. */shot*

@swordsman: I have nervous habits like that already, she wouldn't think anything of it. And it's not that they're not used to listening, it's just...I feel weird doing it while they can hear. It's like I don't want people knowing how I get better at what I'm doing. o.o
A lot of my friends are woodwinds, but the problem is our parts are usually either the exact same or totally different. It wouldn't help really at all.
Especially considering I only know where like...two people live out of my entire band. >>;

Talk to your director about it? Mine will stay afterschool sometimes to write drill or work on other school stuff (sometimes I get a little shock when I remember that he is still a regular teacher. lol.) and even if you don't have any percussionist friends of any winds you can practice with, if you tell him/her you would like to practice while they do paperwork I'm sure they can't deny the chance for you to improve.

Sometimes I'll go to a friend's house and we'll practice on our music together.

And since you're a precussionist you can just practice drumming on any surface that doesn't make too loud of a noise. ^_^

i don't know if your band director has a rule against it or anything, but i like to practice during lunch(during the school year). mostly because there aren't a lot of people in there during lunch, and it's just comfortable to practice in there. if you know any place like a park that not a lot of people go to, you could take your practice pad there and do your practicing..or if you don't mind people watching you while you practice just take your practice pad and sticks with you pretty much where ever you go and practice when you get the chance.

He only lets us practice during lunch if we've already eaten.
And the lines are so long that for me it takes too much of lunch to eat anyway.

Besides, I've figured out that I can practice on my soft pad when my mom goes outside. Don't know how I'll practice mallets but I'll work on that. c:

Thanks, guys! heart
