Welcome! This won't be stickied due to the low brass section, but I decided to create this anyways, for a more "indepth" discussion.
I myself am switching to the tuba in about 1/2 a month, and am wondering from veteran tuba players how the tuba is compared to other instruments...
Feel free to talk all you want!
Enjoy!

Don't worry it takes time and practice. After you get used to it (you know after running out of air. Getting dizzy and falling over sometimes) youll get used to the concusions if you play in marching season as well. all in all though The tuba section is always the best and Most fun! It takes persistance, Practice, Diligance. I wish you luck and remember. if your forced to memorize something and can't remember what the song is. Play the low E. XD Usually works for my section lol.
If you have a good ear youll find a notethat matches the song lol. Thats what the people in my section do! One year the year I joined the tuba section, We had 4 tubas. Me, and 3 others. I had just learned how to play tuba that week. I was section leader right away. For marching season I learned how to play extremeley loud but keeping my tone good. that was my junior year.
Now Im a second year tuba even took a year off for home schooling but missed it and came back anyways. I learned to play louder than the entire band bymyself to cover up the mistakes my section made (No matter how hard I tried to help them they didnt listen. They were mad that I made first chair and section leader so quickly.) and play loud so the entire band could here me because I kept the beat pretty well. The people behind me could see the field commander so I played out for them. We got a 1 at state and I got a funny remark from a judge. "That kid is good. though if the other members of his section don't start playing Im afraid his head might explode..Hes turning red...someone get that sousaphone some water!" Anyways you can do it. Its hard at first very easy after a while. Also Remember Treble Cleff = Every good boy does fine. (Lines bottom to top) E G B D F and Face (spaces) F A C E now bass cleff is : Good Boys Do Fine Always. G B D F A and All Cars Eat Gas A C E G Remember that and reading it should be good for you Good luck my friend!

Drakonis_Darkblade WOW Sorry It was such a long post...Thats the longest Ive ever done!! Heh! No problem! The last thing I'm worried about is reading notes, due to the fact that I'm a piano player of nearing 8 years. However, my school is an optional AJROTC program, with military uniforms and all, which has a spectacular marching band. And, if I joined up as a tuba, I'd probably end up playing the Susaphone as well (which I'm going to be, just not this year) My school only has only one tuba player other than me, and he's a senior as of this year. So you can see why my band teacher is pushing the Tuba on me. (Side note: My parents have no problem with this, as the band is loaning me a free tuba... heh) The low E eh? I'll keep that in mind! Thanks for the help!

yeah, the more air the better. when i started, i was getting headrushes while sitting down. also, the first thing i noticed, is that your endurance seems to nearly be forever. ive never once had to stop because i couldnt hit a note or an interval to rest. and if you are a guy, shave. when i dont shave and im playing in class, it gets really itchy and annoying. it also makes me break out around my mouth alot more

I get to do pep band on tuba now! YAY! The deal with that is when the band decides to play. The bass line has to play thwe loudest. Everyone has to play the loudest. I coverd the band in marching season all alone. I think this is going to be easy. blaugh

Gah. Where are my girl tubas at?! D: I want to complain with them about how biased band directors can be towards girl tubas. I swear, it's because I'm a girl that my band director doesn't take me seriously as a tuba. I'm sure if I was a kick-a** woodwind, I'd get more respect. x_x

I agree girl tubas are sometimes highly disrespected. I'll give you some good advice though Get ready for using a lot of air and if you over work yourself you will get light headed!! Also have fun with mouth positioning and stuff like that ^^ Its really a treat though make sure to warm up and get ready for some really really numb lips cuz its horrible!! Cold water=good

Yeah, people generally are biased against girl tubas. But I know a realy good girl tuba player. She went to state, so...
Pwn
Anyways, what they're saying: Lotsa Lotsa Air. If you march, you're going to have an indestructable shoulder (At least, you will once you get used to it)
The headrushes are kinda fun though, when you get playing really loud, really fast, the the BD stops you and you're like "woooooooaaaaaaaaaah.....Duuuude, Do it again!"
Heh, Fun times
