I love the Jewish attitude of celebrating life and finding joy in the ordinary and the everyday, therefore I love Jewish holidays. The serious ones are respectfully solemn, and the celebratory ones are much more fun than any Christian ones I've celebrated. whee

So, since there are so many celebrations and days of remembrance, and traditional observances, which one is your personal favorite, either in it's concept, or in how your family celebrates it?

Personally, my very favorite is Purim, without a doubt. There's something in it's attitude and it's intentions that's very indicative of Jewish culture as a whole. Plus, the food is great. ^^

I would like to take this time to quote some Jew in Drakyn's profile.

"Whenever anyone tries to genocide us out of existence, we make a holiday out of it."

That's so cool, though. I adore Jewish holidays. I love putting on my high heels and seeing how short I can get with a skirt and still wear it to the family dinner and I love the challah and the atmosphere and the secret longing to get out of Cousin Simmy's house as fast as possible. heart

My favourite, too, is Purim. It used to be only because of my love for hamentashin, but one of the touring rabbis who stopped at my house told us about Purim's significance as more than just a holiday for the children. He's got a bit of writing on it here. I think it's really cool how G-d is more hidden in these stories, talking about the courage of the Jews themselves then divine interference. 3nodding

Almost word-for-word why I like Purim so much. It's unlike any other holiday I'm aware of. Having lived in New Orleans (and loved it ^^) I've got a big soft spot for Mardi Gras, which is usually what people compare Purim to, but it's got a lot of other stuff going on behind it that's just as cool. And challah: heart

Coolest quote EVER.

Heh, I compare it to Gasparilla (Tampa's Mardi Gras... I guess it's like, Florida's Mardi Gras. Sure is the biggest thing of it's kind here... heart heart ), but same thing. I wish they'd bring it back to being towards older people, so we can do more than just wave groggers and pass out candy. x.x;

You're so lucky you get all seven days off for Passover- we only get around two.

crying That's beautiful. That's my new favourite hebrew phrase. xd

Honestly, that was my favorite for ages. My grampa used to make me haggle with him when I sold him the Matzoh, then he'd pay me in silver dollars, Susan B. Anthonies, and other not-quite-common coinage.

However, when I started school at Albany, I decided that Purim was great too. Hillel throws a costume ball in our big reception room, and allt he quads give out hamenta..bleh ( you know what I'm talking about ^^ wink and noise makers.

So there's a nice Hillel up there in Albany? That's good to know. Who'd you dress up as? whee

Purim gives me an excuse to make Hamantashen, so I'm partial to that. I had people begging for them last year.

You seem like quite the cook! In the other thread you were talking about making bagels, and now I hear of you baking hamantashen. Do you specialize in Jewish cuisine? :333
