Jigue shuffled along the pathway in silence, running a thumb across a unique, thick tablet. Small holes decorated the surface of the cardboard-like pages, punched through with an inkless pen to create a braille-esque notepad. He wanted to make sure he was heading toward the correct place, "reading" the address with his fingers over and over again, almost as if it were a nervous habit. However, he knew it would be next to impossible to wind up in the wrong area, as two others who had insisted upon tagging along stuck close to his side.

"So, you nervous?" chirped Xenophon, grinning with directionless amusement. "I've never met the guy. I wonder what he's like."

Jigue might have rolled his eyes, if he had found any point to the gesture. "It doesn't matter, it's just something I need to do. Which reminds me... was there any real reason you decided to come along?" He had actually meant his tone to be harsher than it came out, but he was never one to be very good at expressing annoyance unless it severely affected him.

Xen merely shrugged at the comment, "Hey, a guy's gotta meet his Alpha someday, right? It's the perfect opportunity!"

Jiki could feel the tenseness in the air, noticing that Jigue had refrained from answering Xenopnon's query on whether he was nervous or not. Although he hadn't needed to reply -- Xen probably would not have noticed either way -- Jiki knew that the ghost-marked cat was sometimes just too proud for his own good. Because of this, added to the fact that Xen was altogether too oblivious to Jigue's current short temper, he found himself feeling like he needed to interject into the conversation.

Easier said than done, the fox beta thought despairingly. It hadn't exactly gone all that well the last time he was caught in the middle of an argument between Jigue and another being, and he figured Jigue may still be bitter on account of that. Was he losing his touch, or was it just because he was dealing with others that weren't from his own tribe? There was always someone that seemed to be angry with a decision he had made...

Clearing his throat, he opted to go about it in a light-hearted manner; one that wasn't as commanding as it was friendly, "Alright, that's enough. We've all come for our own reasons. Xen, you don't have to keep questioning everything; you're just going to dig yourself into a hole that way." He received a mixed response. Jigue's ears flattened backward against his head, irritated but grateful that he didn't have to answer Xen's questions any longer.

Xenophon, on the other hand, looked a bit disappointed. He pouted slightly, a childish maneuver, before turning his attention to the fox beta instead. "What's the fun in a silent walk? It's boring when you're with people and can't even talk to them," he grumbled, asking questions once more despite the request not to.

However, Jiki couldn't help but laugh at the circumstance. At least he wasn't bugging Jigue about it anymore. "Some people just like to go over things in their head during situations such as this. It makes organizing thoughts easier, so you know exactly what it is you're going to say," he explained, noting the sigh that came from the energetic orange cat's mouth in response.

Hand tightening around the handle to his violin's carrying case spasmodically, Jigue interrupted the conversation by stating, "There's the place." The ground had long-since transitioned into concrete from the grassy path they had begun on, the restaurant dwarfing the buildings around it (granted, they weren't very large establishments to begin with).

Xenophon eyed Jigue, giving him a funny look. "...How did you do that!?"

Ignoring the question, Jigue stated a simple, "C'mon, we don't want to keep him waiting!"

(( I hope that's an okay place to leave off at! ))

Receiving a response to his ad* on the shop's bulletin board was heartening.

Even his recent talks with the Rat Beta had only tickled a cruel, faint glimmer of hope in the Cat Alpha. Who really cared about pack-related things anymore? Who wanted to trust something that could easily be guaranteed but only followed through with a great weakness unless everyone stood behind their pack? Who was willing to take that chance and invest such effort and faith in a concept made so flimsy by modern culture? That is, unless one was involved in organized crime, perhaps. Could he blame any them? No, never. Ignatius had never blamed anyone, not even other pack leaders save himself; how could he when he himself had been away for a whole year? It had not been his fault, but he still treated it as if it was. He was responsible, someone had to be.

But this, this was going to be a test of his faith in himself as much as others. He was good with the sales pitch, which had encouraged these cats to set up a meeting with him today, but leading and mediating others was never as simple as he liked others to believe. And he had no idea what these cats even needed from him, if nothing more than to touch base with one's alpha.

Beside him sat his son, Keahi. It had been a simple enough decision for the youth to come along. He was, after all, serving in David's absence, not as a beta but as a personal assistant. In some cases that might amount to the same thing, but never had the hybrid ever assumed a measure of power, instead he served merely as a voice, sounding board, and of course to provide support. Isn't that what a spouse is for? he wondered wryly. After all, that seemed to be some of the capacity he and Blythe were serving one another, among other things. He sighed and grinned lightly at his father.

Sandwiching the alpha and his son were Aponi Hateya and Inari, respectively. Inari was currently being clung to by a more recent, wide-eyed addition to the Nullspace, Lev. Aponi sat quietly waiting on the far end. The three foxes had accompanied in response to news that the Fox Beta, Jiki, would be there. Once the old gossip Inari had caught wind of this meeting, he had gone looking for the foxes in residence and finally managed to snag the other two, fully aware that there were others that were currently unavailable. He would be sure, of course, to make sure Jiki knew this and would arrange meetings later on.

This large group, soon to be joined by still more, had had no choice but to reserve a large booth against the back wall of the restaurant. Hopefully the restaurant's owner would not come to regret such a large group's presence, even though enough money had been exchanged to ensure any inconvenience was well-compensated.

Strike that. It's been made. ;D ))

The establishment had a pleasant temperature, something that was immediately evident once the trio had entered through the door. It was a nice change from the weather outside, which had been heating up throughout the weeks to an almost uncomfortable nature -- especially with Jigue's habit to wear long sleeves over his thick fur. Xenophon spread his arms out, as if he were taking in sun, when the cool air hit him, knocking a snicker out of Jiki despite trying to keep his composure.

As Jiki walked to the front to ask about the reserved seating, Xenophon nudged at Jigue with an elbow. "What do you think he'll be like?" Again, he was trying to strike up conversation.

Jigue sighed, but held back from snapping at the other cat. He needed more patience if he were to survive today, and luckily, the milder temperature seemed to be helping with that. "I don't know... and I don't think we should guess about it. What would be the point, if we're heading over right now, anyway?"

Just as Xenophon was about to reply to the question, Jiki came back as if on cue. "Come on, it's this way."

Instead of the reply he was aiming towards, Xen shook his head. "Man, you're good, Shorty..."

Weaving through the maze of tables and people, Jiki looked around the room for the box that the employee had mentioned: a back-wall, family-sized booth. Seemed to be a fitting description.

There weren't many, and even fewer with anthros occupying them. Jiki directed the blind Jigue with a light hand on his carrying case, a way he could do so without drawing attention or making it look like Jigue couldn't find his way around the crowded room.

The beta came up to the table with a slight wave, asking, "This wouldn't be the table w--" He cut himself short, noting that the booth was comprised solely of cat and fox residents (and, of course, Keahi's mix of both), as well as Iggy's mismatched wings symbolic to a pack leader. He smiled warmly, answering his own question, "Yep, this is the place. Hello, I am Jiki, fox beta. This is Jigue," he pulled Jigue carefully forward and into view, "and this is Xenophon." He waved his hand behind himself and stepped slightly aside as Xen flailed an arm happily in greeting. "Mind if we sit down?"

True, he knew that the empty space in the booth was for the three of them to sit, but it would be impolite not to request it just the same.

There was a small commotion at the door. Everyone was in a state of waiting and became aware of the new arrivals within a moment or two.

Lev, forever-nervous, jumped a little in place with a small, half-drowned squeak. He then made a conscious effort to relax, with unfortunate obviousness. Taking several deep breaths, he unwound himself from Inari's arm leaving behind tiny, unintentional claw-marks behind, and folded his shaking hands in his lap.

"They're here," one of the foxes said quietly without taking his eyes off the menu he was studying. Aponi did not need to look up. He had a way about him that hinted at precognition though anyone to assume such a thing would be wrong.

Keahi leaned with one arm over the back of the booth to look back at the door. "He's right."

"Of course he's right," Inari spoke with amusement while he watched Lev's valiant attempts to conquer the many fears he had been living with for untold years of his life. He was very proud of the little fox for even considering coming along, let along actually doing so, and his ever-present smile was genuine when Lev glanced up at him briefly.

Ignatius did not look up. It would be untoward for everyone to be staring. However, he did look up with a broad smile that needed no coaxing as the others arrived at the table. He spoke with a purr that accompanied his raspy voice pleasingly. "Welcome! Please do sit." And as the others decided how they were going to arrange themselves, he gestured to those in his company, introducing each in turn. "Jiki, your foxes are Aponi Hateya..."

The fox Ignatius had indicated bowed a head covered in long, luxuriant, black hair. He wore clothing in home-cured doeskin leather, including a vest that only partially concealed the tattoo-work on his torso. "Good day, Alpha," he said with reverence that Jiki was probably not used to.

"And over here are Inari..."

"Greetings! It's a pleasure to meet you," piped in Inari with another genuine grin. First estimates put Jiki at 'powerful but overall inexperienced leader,' which was a good sign. Time would tell, of course, whether Jiki would prove to be the Beta the foxes needed, or not.

"...and Lev."

Lev jumped again, far less noticeable than before, and stared up at Jiki with round eyes. Something about him exuded energies like Ignatius', but like the Cat, the Fox had a benevolent air about him. "Oh... um, hello..." He offered a small, shy smile to Jiki, eyes sliding back to his menu almost as quickly as they had locked in with the Beta's. What had he decided to order, again? In his nervousness, the answer eluded him. Quickly, he opened his menu and scanned it again, hardly seeing the words printed on the page. He had almost tossed his coffee right out of its cup in the process as it skidded a couple of inches across the table; following suit were his complimentary glass of ice water and Keahi's as well.

Inari leaned closer and murmured in his ear. "You were going to order..."

"Oh. Right." Sheepishly, the little fox folded the menu and handed it over so that it could be placed safely in the small stack that was forming at the end of the table. His ears were flattened to either side of his head. Inari lifted and offered Lev's coffee back to him and he concentrated on sipping at it; the caffeinated brew actually worked to calm the shakes a little.

Meanwhile, the firecat had continued on to finish the introductions with his gracious, hostlike manner. "And of course my son, the fox-cat Keahi, and myself, Ignatius Alpha of the Cats."

Keahi bobbed his head to everyone, his smile eerily similar to his father's. "Welcome, everyone. Feel free to order what you like. They haven't been around to take our orders yet, but the coffee's pretty good."

"The tea isn't too bad either," Inari commented, sipping at a cup with a little flag hanging down the side. Inside was a flowery herbal brew that he had thought would be appropriate for the meal.

"Well, it's a pleasure to meet everyone!" Jiki chimed, holding his hand out to shake everyone else's in return. With his other hand, he motioned quickly for Xenphon and Jigue to sit down, lightly pulling at the former's arm to direct him.

Xen quickly jumped into the booth, exhibiting an excess amount of excitement though not more than what Jiki or Jigue expected out of him. He drummed his hands on the table as he sat, smiling before the thought occurred to him to take a menu.

Jigue shook his head swiftly before he was pulled into the booth, jerking carefully away from Jiki's hand while gripping his violin case tightly. He felt more comfortable sitting on the end, where he didn't feel as though he were pinned. Once Jiki realized this, the fox beta slid in to sit next to Xen, and pulled Jigue to sit next from a different angle.

Upon mention that the orders hadn't been taken yet, Jiki thought it might be best to choose what to eat first, lest the waiter or waitress arrive soon. However, he was unsure whether or not they should eat as well before the meeting actually took place or not, and felt uneasy about asking a question about it. People were suppose to look up to a leader, right? Did asking questions determine any inadequacy on leadership qualities at all?

Grabbing a menu, he forced himself to relax and rationalize. He may still be uneasy about being the only active fox pack leader, but getting all worked up about the situation wouldn't help anything. Especially since there seemed to be a couple of nervous anthros here as well who would not benefit at all from this behavior.

Coming to a consensus, Jiki had another thought come to mind as he scanned through the menu: he'd look mighty demanding if he assumed what everyone had wanted, too. He smirked inwardly at the thought; there had been nothing to worry about to begin with. Taking his eyes from the text, he asked, "So, would it be more comfortable for us to have our conversation after we eat? Or should we get started before?"

Xenophon cocked his head slightly, totally unaware of what it was like to be shy. "I don't see why we couldn't talk while we eat."

"Because some people frown upon talking when someone's mouth is full," Jigue muttered under his breath before almost instantaneously flushing. He lowered his head slightly so that some of his strawberry-blonde hair may hide his reddened face from view. I really need to watch my tongue... I don't know what's gotten into me lately. I'm not usually so grouchy! Finding that it may be easier to hide his face behind a menu, he quickly grabbed for one and opened it up to hide.

Jiki glanced over out of the corner of his eye. With an inaudible sigh, he nudged Jigue and held his own menu to sit on top of the one the ghost-striped cat was holding. Carefully, as if he was just removing Jigue's menu from being in the way, he slipped it under the table, trying not to draw attention to the fact that the cat had been holding it upside-down. It was obvious that Jigue didn't want everyone knowing that he was blind, at least not yet. He understood that sympathy played a large role in Jigue's annoyance with the handicap.

Realizing what Jiki had done, Jigue pulled the menu closer, trying to hide his face further from view. He nodded, as if Jiki had pointed something interesting out to him on the paper.

Raising his head, Xen perked his ears up and asked anyone who would respond, "Hey, what's... 'kwee-chie'?" If nothing else, it helped to lessen any of the tension.

Each anthro met Jiki's handshake differently. Ignatius held the fox beta's hand firmly, testing for resolve; but he did not linger out of rudeness. Keahi's was also a firm shake, but weakened toward the end by curiosity and distraction with the others around him. Inari had already made his silent inquiry, what was left was an enthusiastic enough pumping of the other's arm. By contrast, Lev could hardly take hold, his hand shook so badly. It snaked back toward his lap after the briefest of contact, but not before almost dumping several glasses... again. Aponi's grasp was confident but warm; from him came reassurance, almost like an energy flowing from one fox to another.

Xenophon's nervous drumming set Lev on edge. That is, more so than before. He tried to ignore the cat and focused instead on Jigue. The subtle commotion between the fluffy cat and the fox beta was naturally not lost, and he was left wondering whether... no, Jigue was not nervous. If anything he was irritated, but not so upset that he would miss the fact that his menu was upside-down. Could he be... blind? He knew better than to stare however, as it often brings unwanted attention, and dropped his gaze.

The atmosphere was understandably tense. Half of the crowd was a stranger and a good portion of them were not outgoing people. Ignatius considered this as he considered Jiki's question. "Introductions have been made, but unfortunately that does not mean we all know each other. I think it might be best to share a meal first. Perhaps that will give everyone ample time to relax and perhaps get to know one another... at their leisure." He glanced back at Jiki for for approval.

Inari and Keahi were in agreement with the alpha. Lev hoped this suggestion would put him at ease. Aponi had no preference one way or another; like Inari, he would make his observations whether they ate or spoke. Interaction was interaction.

Next to Xenophon, Inari glanced over his shoulder. "Kwee-chie? Ahh. That's quiche," he commented, pronouncing it correctly. "Ever heard of it?"
