Okay, I wanted to be drum major my senior year. I'm entering my junior year now. I'm in the colorguard, have been all through high school. I was in band- playing clairnet- all middle school. And I still play piano and guitar all the time. And my BD knows that. In our band handbook, it says in order to be a drum major, you must have two years marching experince and be able to read music. I can do both, and I even told the BD that I'd rejoin the band class since I still have my clairnet. (I quit in 9th grade after I had an anxeity attack in the band room since I didn't go to summer band on account of guard camp and NO ONE bothered to teach me how to play higher notes on the clairner. Our middle school BD at that time STUNK. But since then, I've learned the notes.) But he told me no, just cause I quit band. I see his point, but who holds a better case?

I don't think it's exactly fair of him to have told you no. According to the handbook you meet the requirements. But still, you did quit band. That shows a lack of dedication, even if it is a minuscule amount. What happens if you have another anxiety attack and quit again? Those are the sorts of questions that would be running through his mind. Or maybe he just found other people who could do the job better. You have to take all of that into consideration.

Yes, yes, I have thought about that. I don't have any psycological issues that made me have the anxiety attack, it was just too much stress as a freshmen. That's the only attack like that I've ever had. But, we need drum majors, we only have one this year- the first time in two decades. And our BD knows I'd be dedicated because I work my butt of in color/winterguard. We're not one of those guards that practice only with the band. Tuesday I have a practice from 10 am- 6 pm. You have a have MAJOR dedication in our guard. We want a good guard. We don't want to have a guard for the sake of having one like some bands.

I see the band directors point. You quit band. Playing guitar doesn't really make anyone a good director. Also I know that colorguard is usually friends with the bandos but I think the band might want someone from band to be directing them while on the field, they might not think that is fair. Our drum majors go through a stiff interview and application process. I don't think he shouldve just told you no though. He should at least consider you for second in command or assistant if your band is in need of drum majors.
