So I figured it would be cool to talk about your fantasy characters in your writing. Do you tend to have many characters in your writings or just stick with a cast of main characters? Which one is your favorite character in your stories and what makes characters seem interesting in your writings?

I think this would be better in the Writer's Circle to be honest. I'll leave it until you know, or you can move it yourself if you like.
I use the odd random side character, but much of my cast are integral to the plot and are more main characters (though not the protagonist). I didn't want to focus on a single protagonist really, so I try and incorporate the important characters as much as the protagonist himself.

You know what? I think a lot of stories so far tend to focus on what happens to only one or a few characters and only in one area of a certain world. Just take LotR for example. We only see what happens to certain characters and only one continent. How about expanding that idea to other continents of the same world or even other worlds? Would it make the reader lose sight of things? I don't know but I think it could make things more interesting.
In one of my tales, the story line takes you from one set of characters to another and from time to time, it shifts focus to what's going on in another continent and other characters. I have the storyline focus at first on 4 main characters but then, one of them leaves the group for her own purposes and ends up visiting other countries and continents as well. Heck! That character gets to visit other worlds at some point so she's one of my favorites and, I don't tend to just attach myself to only one character btw... 3nodding

not to attach to a character is pretty good, i dont like to have a main hero or heroine in my stories but try to do something diffrent where all my characters are involved as each characters are heros or heroines in their own way.

I agree. I like stories that go in depth on the side characters as well as the main characters. Like, I don't know if you've heard of it, but in the manga Special A (which is super adorable and awesome!) there's a story behind every character for how they act and why.

Good to know you both approve of such tactics to attract readers. I do have at least one story where the plot focuses on a few specific characters but I don't know if they could be popular enough on their own.

Ah I do so love my characters, not to say I wouldn't kill them off if the plot required it. As an example of how much I enjoy chracterizing, I was origionally going to write a book or a few with a main plot line a something like five or six main characters of different races and personallities. My first chapter began with an elf druid, after finishing about half of this chapter I switched prjects to working on a backstory for every one of my characters, starting with her. Heh I now have much more writing on her alone than I have in my origional book idea.

In the story i finished, only one of the good main characters died, but i plan on having him appear in the second. About 6 bad guys died (One died twice) and many monsters died. When good guy died, it was pretty epic (in my opinion.)

I suppose there is something to be said for not being afraid to kill off a character if the plot is no longer gonna be interesting if it stays alive. I haven't done it myself many times but one of my main characters did die in one of my stories. 3nodding

So Mel, you're saying you would never kill any of your most beloved characters then? I am unsure whether or not I would do that to my most favorites but, maybe if I knew that the death of one of them is going to increase the interest rate of the story exponentially... yeah.

Did I actually say that? I know it is essential to kill off SOME very good characters, but I'd have a hard time doing it as I think many authors do.
