I've had in idea for my Steampunk character, but I need some cosmetic help. He's a mercenary, ex-Queen's Guard. I want him to reflect both sides.

But my main focus is more into the retrofuturism, so I'm going to sacrifice a bit of his victorian look for a more rugged, ex-military man.

If you haven't played or heard the game Killzone, it's about a war between humans and mutated humans that call themselves the Helghast. The Helghast are infamous for wearing breathing masks and googles that glow red.

First question is, should he wear a metal chestplate for protection, or not?

Second, should I use big pilot googles or smaller, welding googles?
User Image
Those look good or are they too big?

Secondly, I want to make a more steampunk version of this rifle:

Any suggestions as to how to make it steamier? I already thought of making the stock, grip etc in wood.

Lastly, headwear. What should he wear?
User Image
I like the hat a lot, what do y'all think?

Also, I don't plan on using brassy colors. I want a good contrast of dark colors with the cold gray color of metal.

A brimless hat similar to the one pictured and smaller goggles would definately be more accurate.

    Agreeing with Thani.

Actually, those goggles look swimming sized, too.

Have you thought of how to make the goggles glow?

But wait, are you talking about a character design or an actual costume?

I hope you have fun erasing my post style, though.

You are the demons" And then John was a zombie.

I used this tutorial when I wanted to wire some LED lights into a pair of goggles I made for a friend. You may need to enhance the light with some tin foil on the inside of the goggles - just a strip around the rim is generally enough.

I think the small goggles will look better for your purposes, but I really really like those big ones.

Both. I do want to make a costume, I think it'd be a fun project.

The gun should have the stock replaced with wood, and have some sort of ornate gold inlay. The thing at the back (I'm guessing it's an electromagnetic coil or something) should be replaced with a small steam canister, or a small boiler. Add some gears in places, and make them look like they have a use, and you should be set.

I, personally, like the things that they did with the shotgun in Bioshock.

No actually, the cylinder on the back contains normal, smokeless powder bullets. The weapons in Killzone fire conventional ammo. I had an idea of attaching a hose from the rifle to an external source, that might possibly contain steam or aether.

Oh. I stand corrected.
I've never played killzone, so I don't know what the weapons are like.

Actually, you could try to find an AK-47 that has had a few important parts removed and has been rendered useless, and modify that. I'm only putting that idea out there because it looks a hell of a lot like an AK, and it would cut out a lot of work.

EDIT:
yes, it is possible to find these, although if you plan on going to some sort of convention with this outfit then you might want to make one out of PVC pipes and stuff, because many cons don't allow metal weapons as props, no matter how much it detracts from your look.

Ironic that I have an airsoft AK-47 just waiting to be dismantled.

Plastic AK-47 is better and quicker than making your own from PVC and considerably cheaper than buying a real one that has been modified for non-combat use.

Actually most of the receiver is made of metal, and the rest of strong plastic.

I'd take into consideration first a few things:

1: what type of guard was he? was he a Grenadier? Was he a Welsh guard? or a Scots? or a Irish Guard

2: does he need to wear a mask?

3: what's his build type?

4: personality. He's ex-military/ex-queens guard. What are his motivations to make him make a complete 180% turn from complete loyalty to rebellion?

I'd like to take a wack at designing this guy, and see what I can do, but I'd need to understand the character a bit better before doing that.

He was a rifleman, he was actually renowned for his skill with rifles. The mask is something he built, which enhances his vision and well, you know the use of the gasmask. Also, it conceals his face, since it got badly scarred. The 180 turn was made when he lost his family to some guards, thanks to a conspiracy. He's not that tall, slightly muscular tan-ish complexion.

His current personality, he's serious, quiet, but straight to the point. He does have a weak spot for children, having had 3 before they were killed.

Any other questions?

So he served as a Grenadier then. okay...I can work with that.

two more things:

do you have any references on facial appearance? Any celebrities or whatnot you think would be the person to act his role?

how do you think he would achieve the glowing eye effect with the goggles?

I forgot to mention, this char is for an RP not set in our world. Steamfantasy FTW.

As his face...he looks like John Cusack.

But with a goatee and moustache, and his eyes should look tired.

As for the glowing effect on the goggles, I was going fer the 'Rule of Cool', though you can easily say Aether, SCIENCE!, MAGIC! or 'A Wizard did it'.
