Official MURDER! Guide for First-Time Role Players

"Murder sounds kind of fun, but I don't know how to role play."
That's no excuse! Read this handy guide! biggrin

There are many great resources on how to become a good role-player on the internet, on Gaia... You should totally seek those out!
But here's some really basic instructions that include everything you need to know to be a good enough role-player for MURDER!

On Making A Profile

The first step is to create a character. There are no specific rules on creating a character. But make them interesting! Make them like you! Make them nothing like you! Play the opposite gender! Play someone who's a lot older than you! A lot younger than you!

Imagine for them a past, a family, a back story. Give them a dream, hobbies, talents. Maybe you won't get to talk about all that in the game, but if you have it in your head, then it will come out in your character.

But don't be intimidated to come up with the best character. Often, in MURDER!, it's best just to get your profile in fast, especially if everyone's been waiting hours to get enough players.

You'll see a story and a profile skeleton like this:

The party is Eva Wilkerson’s 16th birthday bash, hosted in Lynch Hall, a beautiful, classical building, perfect for hosting large parties.
The guests: Her friends. No adults allowed!

Skeleton:
Username:
Name:
Age:
Gender:
Describe yourself in a sentence:
How you know Eva:
Picture:

The story requires that you are not an adult, and it also requires that you write in how you know Eva. This gives you permission to give you and Eva whatever sort of relationship you want. This game also requires that you post a picture. Try to find one on photobucket or google images.

Here's an example profile.
Username: Bella Belltastic
Name: Robin Harrow
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Describe yourself in a sentence: Robin rarely shows emotions, but tends to be overly sarcastic.
How you know Eva: Good friend from school.
Picture: User Image

Note how the profile is simple, but full of character, and she seems pretty interesting. biggrin
Something you should try to learn while playing MURDER! is how to create interesting characters as fast as you can. xd

On Role Playing

Role playing is just like writing a story. Try writing a few sentences about what your character is thinking, how they're feeling, and then have them say things and do things. Try to engage with the other characters!

Here's an example post:

Robin parked her truck behind a sleek black car and rolled her eyes. She could tell this wasnt going to be an enjoyable evening. Robin wasnt much for socializing, and if Eva wasn't a good friend, Robin would be at home right now lounging on the couch and watching "I Love Lucy" re-runs. She grabbed the gift from the passenger side and hopped out of her truck, walking up to the front door and giving it a hard knock.

"Nice place..."

Good post! biggrin See how she showed her character through her post? Good stuff.

Role Playing Etiquette

One thing to look out for in role playing is "Godmoding." That is when you play out someone else's character for them. It's really not cool. For example, if you want to have someone else's character say something so you can have a snazzy response, and so you make up what someone else says. Don't do it. It makes people unhappy. Only act out with your character.

Remember, if a character doesn't say something out loud, your character does not know that information. So, if someone posts "Jamie smiled at Gil, and said 'I really love you more than anything.' But she thought 'What an incompetent idiot, these people are easy to fool.'" you can't say "Gil glared at Jamie and said 'I'm on to your schemes! I hate you! I'm gonna go out with Lily!'" After all, Jamie hasn't given Gil any clue what she's really thinking. However, no one is going to be mad at you if you post "Gil was happy at the reassurance of Jamie's love, but something still made him wonder."

In MURDER! it's also kind of important to keep your posts on the short side, especially towards the end of the game as it gets more intense. A lot of people are posting a lot of the time, so you may discover that while you were writing your post, someone else posted before you. Try to keep your posts longer than a sentance and less than a chunky paragraph.

If anyone has any suggestions to make this section better, please tell me! (I'm sort of a new role player myself.)
But remember it's important to make it simple, so let's not bog the players down with rules. sweatdrop
