Ugh. I'm so tired of everyone calling percussion lazy. stare I mean like, in our percussion we have like, maybe 4 parts we can play in a song, and then 9 percussionists.
We can't ALL play some of us have to sit out.
and we can't put two on a part like other insturments. Then it'd just be too loud.
And yes, sometimes we miss our parts because we're talking, but it's mostly to the other percussionists who AREN'T playing

Here's an idea: DON'T TALK WHEN YOU HAVE A PART! stare just because there are a lot of rests in percussion parts, doesn't mean you get to chill and talk to your friends.

um, no its not. you have to be disciplined and keep count just like the rest of the band. your not special just because you don't use your mouth to play. In fact, percussion should be the ones paying the most attention, because if we don't, we slow the whole band down. stare

Talking during a song is not awesome. its sloppy. It shows a huge lack of discipline and reflects badly on you as a musician, and your entire band. Not only that, but its disrespectful to the people playing, and your conductor. In my band, you talk during practice or a performance, your but is in the fire, and if you do it again, your out. there is no screwing around like Jr. High kids. we are there to play music, not to visit.

My percussion section does just that. They talk almost non-stop. Except when tehy have to play.
Then, we only talk to each other if we get lost and that's just to ask what measure we're at.
And they call us lazy because we don't have to blow into our instruments, that's all. >>

yeah, my section is massive (12 people) and we only have like 1 bass drum and 3 working snares and two other parts. The rest of us usually just go sit in the back and work on fixing whatever our middle school retards broke that day. (*sigh* yes, we share our equipment with the middle school)

This is called a thread, the forum is the page where you select the thread.

I'm not taking sides here, but I agree with Kokihi when she said that talking during songs can be sloppy. (Okay, I guess I AM taking sides here, but...) I follow along very carefully even though I may have like, thirty measures of rest. .: But that's just me. :.

look you say whatever I come from a band with about 30 or 40 some kids
We goof off and have fun but when it comes down to it we're totally serious.
We're not stupid neutral
and yeah, we have to share our equipment with the other grades too D: one time we came in and there was a hole ripped in our snare because of them mad

I'm not saying don't have fun. I'm saying that you shouldn't goof off during practice. (Tho i can understand talking while the rest of the band is tuning, unless you need to tune your drum.)
I don't come from a very big band either, but in my section, you could have over a hundred measures of rest, and you had better be counting the rests silently to yourself until the director says you are dismissed.
