Okay! Hoopy, so we have several new members! Hi! And we're expanding. Some of the planning can be seen in the Painting Gallery. Though I can't promise with the move being two weeks away and counting how much will be done before we leave.... Sorry.
I was wondering since we have a lot of different styled artists here that use a myriad of mediums (which sounds cool.... myriad of mediums.... medium myriads.... w00t I'm tired!) and since we're a guild of artists by artists and for artists, what do you guys want to see?
You all have different areas of specialty. I hope we can grow this into something amazing and rarely seen on Gaia-- an active guild that works! And I'd like to be the single most comprehensive guild on Gaia. One that not only showcases our work-- hell we have journals for that. But one that inspires, teaches, and allows creativity to grow and flourish. Within ourselves and others.
Let us know where you want to take this. What you want to see.

Hoopy? what the..
I personally would like to challenge the newer members who are a bit shy to not ask what they can do.. or where they can do it.. If you've got something and you want to share it, throw it out there. If you have an idea for something, let us all know, much like Tomboi has done with her upcoming contest, and Lord Seraph with his creative writing project. Hopefully in the (near) future, I can splurge a little and award all of you members for these sorts of things, as I feel you deserve it. Like Lyssa who basicly kicked me in the shin after giving me a flat tire, and just started going with whatever impulse she has as to what she thinks will look good, work well, and be beneficial to our guild.
Also, don't be shy about your artwork. None of us are here to bash, unlike most other forums.. seems bashing is the way of the internet these days you know? I hope we all can appreciate the effort put into all of our works, even if it isn't our media pyramid preference.. (wtf did lyssa say up there?...tirade lemonade?) If something sucks..well we're here to suggest techniques and ideas in order to help each other out.
Most importantly.. I want a fruit stand. Right over there -->
(They actually have something called an Ugli Fruit. I'm dying to try it. That and this weird cream colored melon with purple stripes. Wild.)

Bri's right. I do whatever I feel like doing here... it's a creative process for me, both in finding things to bring to the table (or thinking about things to discuss), and thinking about what I want to do personally to help shape this guild. But I never ask permission... I'm an artist. That's like asking someone else if I can visualize a story behind an avatar, or a robot building space... I just do it. Then I get feedback, then I redo it or rework it if needed.
It's also how I keep my Co-Captain status.... Bri gave it to me because I was more active than those people he had at the time, I'm running with it and hopefully proving that he made a good decision. Not to impress him, but to build something unique and wonderful here.
And yes, hoopy. Life is hoopy! I am hoopy! Eric is a megahoopy! hehehehe!
Sooooo, speaking of, Eric says you're gonna kill me for this Brian... But you said you wanted a fruit cart!!! I gave you a whole bleedin' fruit and produce store! hehehehe!!!
And notice it doesn't say "Brain's Fresh Fruit and Produce"????
Okay, so now I'm dead at the wheel. Goodnight everyone.
Oh and hoopy hoopy hoopy!

Well, I have a bit of a suggestion, might not be exactly HUGE of an idea, but it's at least something to get everyone started on showing their art pieces. ( I myself will be posting some of my photographs that I've taken and forgot even existed . . . yay for forgetting that I'm forgetful!!!) But yeah, I think that it would be nice for those who are able, to grab a camera, and go snap a pic of something they think is meaningful. Art DOES come in all forms after all, and more than just mediums. It's anywhere from the story behind the piece, to the sentiment, or even just aesthetically pleasing visual representation.
. . . . Ok, now I'm not making sense. I'll come back and edit this when I can figure out how to properly word it. sweatdrop

I remember during a class we were trying to answer what Art is but it's pretty difficult thing to define. I think it's whatever the artist decides to call art.

I have my own produce stand!
Sweet! I'ma make a salad! Actually.. starting tomorrow I jump on this whole diet thing I've got planned.. wish me luck! I'm changing my 89% carnivore ways to 95% herbivore for a while.. still gonna throw some meat on there though, but limited. We'll see just how insane I get.
A picture of something meaningful? Eric my feathery friend, I do believe we need to put that in the photo section as a creative photography project.

lmao honey! I love you! You're as scattered as I am. And I'm so glad we have some of your art my darling! That's just *SO* flippin' cool it's unreal! It's so cool, it's HOOPY to the hoopieth degree of Hoopy!
Vasalisa's right, art is whatever we as people say it is. There's a lot I don't care for, Andy Warhol's collective works come to mind. I'm sorry, I think they're low-budget bottom barrel crap with no imagination. (Admittedly, I plan to parody some stuff for Dr. Steel. I think he'll laugh his butt off.) But somewhere, someone decided he was a genius of art. And there you have it. Someone could sincerely believe sewer slime is art, and they'd be right because art; all art is interpretive and subject to the definitions based on how it moves us.
This is why I think art critics should be skinned and hung- you have a bunch of people who took classes on diction and form, but couldn't make art if they had easels growing out their ears. But still, those opinionated (look who's talking) "experts" can go and trash a play or an artist or whatever and people fall in line and believe that the work or person isn't worth seeing.
That's also why we don't do that here. Giving critiques on technique is one thing, that actually helps, but to just bash something and say, 'oh hey because you don't live up to my standards, you're not an artist. This isn't good', whatever is just wrong. It was art to the artists. And even poorly executed works can still be art, if only as a learning process to grow and enhance one's techniques and skill.
That being said, I think every form of art; every piece (whether or not I personally like it) is vastly important. Because each and every piece comes from somewhere in the human psyche or heart. As much as art represents us as artists, we are reflected in our art. Even when I'm making web graphics, you can generally tell what I'm thinking about. Even if it's only what's going through my mind regarding the shop I want to open. Or what I think I should include.
And yes Bri, you have a whole produce store! Whoohoo! And oh man...., I just laid a cooking request on you for a guide to buying meat... I'm sorry. You could add one for produce and herbs too. Maybe a guide to herbs, what they basically taste like or are used for, and how to tell if they're of good quality. Because personally, I'm lost on all that stuff.
Good luck with that man. Personally, I'm a balanced omnivore. There's very little I won't eat. Most of it seafood because Eric and I are allergic, and I'm deathly allergic.
Maybe if Ak has the time, she might help with the Photography section? I know she's got a deep seated love of that, and we could really use a break down of the process of photography. I'd love to see an article or process essay on how to hand develop film. That'd be hoopier than hoopy! But even forms, styles, and whatever.
I love photography, but my specialty is actually oddball signs that make no sense. I'm taking a picture of a store called Wiener World downtown when we're there next because there's help wanted sign in the window. Can you imagine someone saying, "Hi, welcome to Wiener World, home of the best wieners in the word. How may I help you?"
I know, I'm very easily amused. Oddly enough, it helps!

Man as good at cooking as I may be.. I have a hard time explaining my herb preference.. see my problem is putting what I do and feel into words. For instance, Bay leaves are an all time favorite spice for me. It's got such a great flavor and..all I can say to describe it..is it tastes and smells like bay leaf. haha. I think I'm going to have to get a notebook going so I can write down my cooking quirks as I go so then I can have a better idea as to wtf I'm doing.
To me, cooking is almost as good as meditation, or massages, or saunas, or whatever your fancy for relaxing may be. I couldn't do all that stuff they do on hell's kitchen or iron chef where it's like.. crank out 6 three course meals in half an hour from scratch... I like to take my own time, hear how things sound when they cook, the smells of whatever it is, and so on. I can honestly say, the kitchen is my zen garden biggrin .

I agree on the last Brian. Taking your time (even when famished) is what cooking is REALLY all about. And THAT, is the difference between an artist, and a commercial artist (production = art =a load of horsecrap). We might have to get together with you one day and spend the day in a kitchen, cooking random things, just for the enjoyment of it all.
Come to think of it, it's been awhile since I made cake from scratch, and I wish I could remember the bloody recipe for that home-made frosting that I whipped up that was vanilla, with chocolate shavings in it (my god it was JOYGASMIC!!!!) so we could do those as well. It'd be a heck of a dessert for after the meals (which would probably earn us all about 40 or so extra Lbs) xd

Man way to tempt me away from my diet. Hm.. what sort of frosting? I could probably help you out a bit there. Butter cream frosting's pretty simple, a cool whip frosting is nice and light for those heavier/sweeter cakes. And I make a really easy, really good white chocolate cream, which is easy to tweak and adjust to your needs. I've used it to fill between cake layers, frost cakes, and also on strawberry shortcake (you whip it till it's a little thick, but still liquid and runny basically.)
One of these days I WILL have my own restaurant once I get myself into and through culinary school. When that happens, I say starving uninspired artists eat free.

I am currently living with a roommate who is going through culinary school. The funny thing is the other roommate who is in nursing cooks more and absolutely loves it. We had Ratatui and it really tastes better when it's been sitting over night in the fridge since all the flavors mix together..

This is prolly just me, but I hate most frosting. People (as a rule) make them way too sweet for my taste.
Cream-cheese frosting is one of my favorites, and most I've found on the net say you should add 3 cups of confectioners sugar (or more!) to a batch for a single cake. OMG! Gag me with a raccoon... I mean spoon... I mean... Nevermind. mrgreen
Uber easy "drizzle" type frosting...
Use a double boiler/& or rig one... I don't have one, so yeah, I'm ghetto and actually have to put a smaller pan inside a larger pot of boiling water... It ain't fancy, but it works...
Anyway do a cup or cup and 1/2 of heavy (whipping) cream and melt in 1/2 a bag (or so) of semi-sweet chocolate chips... keep stirring while it's heating.
Pour over your cake.
While it's still warm/room temp it's a lovely gooey warm chocolate decadent delight. If you chill the leftover cake it actually turns in to a lovely thicker chocolate frosting.
It's delightful both ways, and supper fast/easy. And not "too" sweet.
And I'm with Brian. Cool-Whip can make some absolutely great *light* frostings... One idea is just making a batch of instant pudding... Any flavor that will compliment your cake well... And stir it in with a tub of Cool-Whip... Spreads uber easy and is very tasty, and again... Uber easy.

Is your culinary room mate hot?
Don't answer that.
A raccoon? ...is this the sort of tomfoolery that goes on when I'm MIA??
Asia, you're making yourself a nice semi-sweet ganache up there sounds like. I normally use bittersweet chocolate to balance the cake out a little.
Another thing you can try, which I highly recommend is
3 cups heavy whipping cream 14oz White Chocolate, semi sweet, or whatever chocolate tickles your fancy, chopped or morsels.
Simmer 1 cup HWC in a saucepan till it's nice and hot. Put the chocobits in a large bowl, pour the hot cream over it, whisk until thick, refrigerate for an hour, add the other two cups of cream, and whip that sucker up to whatever consistency you want it to be. Thicker for frosting, thinner for shortcakes or a drizzle.
Here's where it gets fancy! not really..
Add a tsp of whatever sort of flavored extract to it. Bittersweet chocolate with orange extract is really good. Peppermint and white chocolate, I'm a whore for raspberry anything so that works to...the raspberries not.. nvm. So yeah, it's a very easy recipe, and one you can use for tons of stuff.
