~*Catch a dream and turn it to an idea...

Kellar's brown eyes watched as a dragon flew above the weyr's lake, imediately began to copy down the image into his sketchbook. He worked quickly, trying to finally get a sketch of a dragon in flight that looked right. All his attempts before were awkward-looking and didn't have the graceful yet powerful appearance that it should have. At first he started out lightly to get the basic shape, but soon began to apply more pressure onto his paper as he went into the detail, darkening the lines. When he was finished he leaned back to examine his work since he had a habbit of leaning in very close as he drew.

He glanced up at the dragon in the air and then the dragon that soared in his sketchbook. A satisfied smile spread on his face as he saw improvements in this sketch. He then layed back with a relaxed sigh, content on watching the majesty of the dragons around the lake.

Zhaylan had a precious pad of paper and charcoals in his hands. They were a gift from his foster mother, Tersa, who gave them to him as a reward for being Searched. He thought of it more as being stifled by strangers, strange customs, and people trying to constantly make conversation with him. It was very annoying.

But at last, Zhaylan had a chance to get out and away from the crowds of people. He could pay attention to his art and to the one think at the Weyr that actually fascinated him. The dragons. So many shapes, sizes, colors... He personally hoped that he would get a chance to draw the gold dragons but doubt he would ever get that chance. Instead, he was here, at the lake, to draw the dragons, and their riders, for his own interests. Maybe he could earn a quarter mark or two if a rider really wanted to keep the sketches. Pushing his pale hair out of his eyes, Zhay scowled once more when he realized there was another person already down at the lake.

And he or she appeared to be drawing as well.

Making noises to himself, Zhaylan merely ignored the other person and moved to where he would have a good vantage point for drawing. If he could get the outlines down then perhaps he could add color later. Paints were easy to make. Settling his frame on a medium sized boulder, Zhaylan flipped the book open started sketching an enduring scene of a green and her rider swimming together.

~*Catch a dream and turn it to an idea...

As Kellar stared around, he noticed someone off in the distance. They were dragonless, so that obviously wasn't what caught his attention. What interested him was that it seemed like the other man was drawing! He sat up and stared over for a few moments, debating on weather to go over and see what exactly it was the man was drawing. He stood, brushing any lose blades of grass off that may have clung to his clothes, and made his way over.

When he approached the artist, he didn't try to start talking to him, figuring that he wouldn't want to participate in conversation while he was working on something. So instead, he kept a comfortable distance behind him and attempted to watch as he drew. As he watched, already he was begining to admire the man.

Zhaylan could feel the other person moving slowly closer to him. He sighed mentally but kept his eyes on the dragon and her rider, his hands moving on the paper. As long as the fool...erm, person didn't try to talk to him, he supposed the other male could stay and watch.

Finally, the dragon and her rider moved off. Looking down, there was an enchanting scene of a dragon looking down at her rider with water dripping off of both of them. Zhaylan was quite pleased with the effect. Flipping the page, he spotted a brown sunning on the far shore ahead of him. His vision was not the best but he would at least be able to get the general idea down and expand it later.

Flicking a glance at the stranger who had been watching him for so long, Zhaylan took in the other's basic details-height, hair color and style, facial structure. Nothing really special or out of the ordinary there.

When Kellar saw the finished drawing of the green and her rider, he eyed the artist with amazement. Wow, he must have a whole lot more experience then me. he thought to himself. He suddenly felt rather stupid standing near this skilled artist, almost like he shouldn't be wasting his time. However, that didn't stop him from blurting out the compliment that had formed.

"You know, you're really good," he said with an appreciative smile. He had no idea that the other man wasn't the social type and didn't want to talk... which was about the opposite himself. "I couldn't ever draw anything that good just yet," he said, finishing the compliment. He held his own sketchpad and drawing utensils at his side, somewhat hoping that the other wouldn't notice them.

Zhaylan tried not to scowl. He gave the other another good luck; they looked to be about the same age. So why was the other acting so foolish? Didn't the man have any pride. Glancing over, he noticed the pad and soft graphite stick in his hands. So that was it? The man thought he could sketch as well.

Drat!

The brown had moved off with the drawing only half done. Shards! Trying to remain calm, Zhaylan turned and officially looked at the stranger. His eyes had an intense focus about them that would come off as unnerving to some. "I just missed that brown sunbathing. What did you say about drawing? I hope it was worth me losing the scene."

Sitting up, Zhaylan might have seemed imposing if not for the paint flecks in his hair, the charcoal smudges on his face, the clothes in disarray. Frowning, Zhay tried to focus. "You were drawing too?"

At hearing that he had caused the artist to miss his picture Kellar frowned, now feeling guilty. "Ah... I'm sorry, I didn't mean to distract you. It's just," he motioned at the drawing, "you're really good and I... wanted to let you know, I guess," he gave the other a weak smile and an apologetical look. He really didn't mean to be a neusance.

"Oh!" he glanced down at his own sketchbook. "Yeah... but I'm not as good as you," he said, a little reluctant to turn the attention on his own drawings. He'd surely laugh if he saw some of the attempts he made at drawing. "So, uh... what's your name?" he asked with a friendly smile, almost trying to change the subject.

Conversation. Great. Why had he opened his mouth to speak to the other male? Zhaylan tried to think but his attention was already caught by a bronze coming in low over the lake. Not even bothering to respond, Zhaylan turned back to his sketchpad to hurry and get the scene before it ended.

His hands moved quickly across the page and soon the dragon was captured on paper. Satisfied, Zhaylan turned around and realized that the stranger was still there, watching him... And expecting an answer apparently. "Name? My name? Zhaylan. From Fort Harper Hall. I am an Artist."

Manners. Polite. Something Tersa had said to him. Name, Hall, rank and craft. What was he supposed to do? Would he be able to create bronze on paper? Maybe if he gave the boy-er not boy, man... Um... "Your name?"

Kellar waited patiently and quietly while Zhaylan had returned to his sketchpad. It amazed him how fast he was able to capture the image on the paper.

"Kellar," he replied. "I live her at Ista and I'm hoping to become a Dragonhealer some day. I'm just an apprentice healer though," he explained. He then held out his hand for a handshake, regardless of any smudges that may have been on Zhaylan's hand from drawing. "It's nice to meet you Zhaylan," he said with a friendly grin, moving his head to keep his bangs from falling any further into his face.

His hand was sticking out? Did he want something? Wrinkling his brow, Zhaylan gave him a charcoal stick. There. That should satisfy...um...Kellar. He went back to work on the sketch of the bronze. Definitely his favorite picture so far. Wings stretched out wide, reflection on the water... Maybe add some flits in the air.

Then he realized that the other had a puzzled look on his face. What, he was an artist? A healer? Why would a healer be drawing? Don't they have to be clean? "Charcoal works better for sketching than soft sticks. Easier to capture shading. Try it."

There! A lesson. Maybe that would help him get gone.

Kellar was definitely confused when he got a charcoal stick instead of a handhsake. He stared down at the unexpected gift-- if one would call it that-- and then back up at Zhaylan. "Uhm, thank you," he said, a puzzled tone still lingering in his voice. He gave him a more enthusiastic 'thank you' upon recieving the tip.

Much to the other's dismay, instead of running off like a happy child that just received some yummy treat, he lingered, sitting down with his sketchbook out and his new charcoal stick. He couldn't wait to try it out! He did some practice sketches first, one the head of a dragon, the next the wing, and the third one of the limbs. Zheylan was right, the shading looked much better! If only he knew how to shade the muscles on a dragon properly... Since he never got close enough to observe a dragon, his always came out smooth with no muscular detail.

When Kellar sat down next to Zhaylan's rock, the Artist barely registered him. Already, he was captivated by a blue that was almost completely submerged in the waters. Blue came in many different shades and this dragon was darker than the waters he swam in. Zhay had just finished drawing a bubble when he realized that he was still not alone.

Healer. Drawing. Dragons. Maybe he needed to know what dragons looked like... Or not. Dragons all looked the same. Shaking his head, pale bangs hanging in his eyes, Zhaylan tried to think again. What did people do when they weren't doing other stuff? Habits? Hobbies! Yes! That was it. "Do you have to draw on purpose?"

Did that come out right? It must have, it sounded okay to him. Nodding happily to himself, Zhaylan worked on making the line between the water and dragon seamless.

"No, actually," Kellar replied as he began to sketch another airborn dragon. "I draw because I like to," he explained, mostly focusing on his open sketchbook. "I've never really met anyone else who drew as well. I actually thought..." he cut himself off, not wanting to trouble Zhaylan.

"I'm sorry, I'm talking too much aren't I?" he asked with a light chuckle. Though he managed to keep his voice in a lower, less distracting tone, Kellar figured that Zaylan would want more quiet while drawing. It just wasn't every day that he met another artist.

Yes, he was still talking. And turning Zhaylan's eyes from all the different scenes that he could be sketching. But if he drew them all, his paper would be filled. This thought made Zhaylan sad. Tersa didn't have a lot of marks to keep sending him paper. And he had scrapped together maybe 3 or 4 marks total from his part of commissions.

Reluctantly, the large man closed his book and blinked slowly. He tried to clear his thoughts and recall what the...er...Kellar had said. Something about liking to draw. He liked to draw. The Harper Caskeyn had said he had liked to draw since he toddled. Drat! Was he staying on track again?

"I don't talk much. I draw a lot. Especially people. They give me money. My title is Artist." Yes, that made since to him. And as long as it made since to Zhaylan than it should make since to everyone. Nodding to himself, he looked at the drawing. "Scale is off."

"I can tell," Kellar said, chuckling at Zhaylan's first statement. So wait! There was an actual title for artists? He became a little flustered as Zhaylan critiqued his drawing. "Uh... ahh.. it is?" he asked, now eyeballing the little doodle on the page. Like his untrained could tell! Though he greatly appreciated (constructive) crits, especially if it was from someone he admired-- which Zhaylan had now fallen under-- on another hand he was still shy about letting anyone else see his drawings.

Secretly, though, he was beginning to make an exception for the Artist. Why not? The man could definitely give him tips, if he even chose to that is, and he was greatful to find someone with the same artistic talent as him! Though he couldn't match up to Zhaylan's greatness. Dear oh dear, he hadn't even seen a completed piece from the man and yet he's already established him as probably the best artist in all of Pern! It was like Kellar was a child again who had just seen an older boy Impress a firelizard or something.
