Why is it that when Rose looks into the vortex she takes the power of the TARDIS but for a time lord to look into it at the age of 7 or 8 ( I forget the age) it's totally cool?

Actually I just figured out the answer by watching the episode again. Feel free to discuss anyway and maybe I'll post my opinion later. =p

Is it 'cause human minds can't handle all the information?
Like, the past, present, and future?
Isn't that what is seen when they look into the vertex?

They see the raw power of time and all of its infinite complexities. I have a feeling that if any one of us Humans tried to look in there, it would cause either deep insanity or our heads to go boom (whether inward or outward is your decision).

LOL @ self-answering thread. smile

Rose felt like her head was gonna asplodey after absorbing all that knowledge, and Donna said that her head burned too. So apparently it's like some big hot furnace of knowledge that humans don't have the capacity to handle.

Side effects may include burning, itching, red eyes, migranes, and in some cases, short bursts of hyperactivity. Prolonged exposure may cause insanity and/or death. Not fit for consumption. If you come in contact, please consult your Doctor immediately.

Available prescriptions from the Doctor are very limited. Please consult him or her about

a. A snog that draws the Vortex from your body much like sucking poison from a wound, causing him to end a precious life of his
b. A quick and smooth mindwipe that will knock you out and force you to leave him forever lest the memories return to your mind and cause you to go boom inward and outward all at once.

Thank you and have a nice day.

I don't think it's only looking that makes your head go kaboom, I think you have to choose to absorb it in some way. Or the TARDIS chooses to let you absorb it.

I only say this because a lot of other Doctor Who stories and spin offs and things have people flying around the vortex, dropping things in the vortex, swimming through the vortex, tripping over the vortex... the list goes on. And it IS just a big swirly colourful thing on the surface. You can't go mad from just that surely?

It's probably the force of absorbing something in the Time Vortex/Tunnel/corridor that higher species like Time Lords can handle, but not humans and similar species.

Which reminds me...I came up with this weird analogy during a class one time.

Dog is to Human as __ is to Time Lord

a. Human b. TARDIS
c. Sonic device d. Tin dog

I have one thought... but it's judging by just the Rose episode... cus I haven't gotten to Donna yet.

When Rose looked into the Tardis and saw the Time vortex... it wasn't contained nor was it filtered. When it showed time lords looking into the vortex (such as the Master and the Doctor) it seemed restrained as though the time lords had figured out how to keep it behind glass or something like that... so when timelords looked into the time vortex, they were protected and they were shown it to become afraid of what was within... Probably as a safety feature to keep the kids away from actually looking at the time vortex in the Tardis.... that way, when they did look at it as an adult, they wouldn't draw it into them... but Rose didn't understand that... so when she opened the panel... she just wanted to go see the doctor, and she didn't care how she did it...

At least... that's what I got out of it...

It's because they looked at it through this thing called the Untempered Schism. Untempered suggests to me that they looked at it without any sort of "glass" shielding their sanity, but that it couldn't harm them if they did. The Doctor once said something about how if a Time Lord absorbed its power, it would become like a god. When Nine sucked the vortex energy from Rose, he appeared to get like that for a bit and then started to die, so he regenerated.

I think that when people look into the time vortex in the TARDIS, it can look into the mind of the person looking in it and gives them the ability to accomplish a goal. When Timelords look into the vortex, it doesn't look into the mind, but the mind reacts to it.

Last bit's the wrong way round.

Dog is to human as Time Lord is to TARDIS. twisted

The Doctor is obviously the TARDIS's pet. His adventures are the equivalent of a dog being taken to the park and thrown a stick to catch.

Don't forget that if your dog dies, you buy a new one...
