Ball Jointed Dolls. Fascinating, lifelike, enchanting. To their owners, these resin creations are more often than not more than just dolls. Sometimes, it's almost like they're alive... Much to the shock of those who ordered from the Esprit Vivant company... sometimes they are alive.
Esprit Vivant dolls, like all BJDs, are hand-produced with care and devotion. However, this company goes where no other has dared to go. With each doll comes a crystal on a small chain; this crystal contains the soul of a deceased individual, in most cases one who went before his or her time. When the doll wears the crystal, the soul inside inhabits its new resin body. Each doll has its own soul, and its own story to tell...

The Story
Esprit Vivant came to be in 1993, when bereaved BJD lover Hanako Demouille decided to capture the souls of her deceased husband and daughter and give them the bodies of ball-jointed dolls, at great risk to her life and limbs. Hanako's first doll, Vive Maria, made her debut at a collector's convention. This doll was an exact copy of the little girl she had lost. Her second doll, Vive Katsuro, was an exact copy of her husband. The public loved them, but little did they know that these dolls had within them the souls of her lost loved ones... Like Maria and Katsuro, all Esprit Vivant dolls contain the soul of a dead person. Each soul is housed within a crystal, which is worn on a chain around the doll's neck. Without this crystal, the doll cannot move or speak. The soul will "sleep," or remain dormant within the crystal, until the crystal is on the doll and the resin is touched by a human. In order to avoid prematurely awakening the dolls, the makers wear gloves and package the crystals in plastic. Once awakened, the doll can interact with other people and other dolls as if it were a real person. In order to keep the soul from going back to sleep, the doll's resin must make contact with the human owner at least once every twenty-four hours. If the human and the doll so desire, they can release the soul within and allow it to return to the afterlife. Our story begins in April 2008. Esprit Vivant fans have taken over historic Ellicott City, Maryland for a weekend to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the start of the company. Hanako Demouille has decided to drop in with her two special dolls, Maria and Katsuro, in order to thank the fans for their devotion. However, when Maria goes missing, the event goes to hell...

Rules 1. Do not break the Gaia ToS under any circumstances. That means no smex. 2. Obey me, for I am your goddess. 3. You don't have to -own- a BJD to participate in this roleplay, and you don't have do be a member of Den of Angels, but I -do- expect you to have some BJD background knowledge. 4. Literacy, please. Avoid one-liners, speak in third person, be coherent, and for the love of all, please don't break my eyeballs with illegible colors. No godmoding, no killing, and no smex. 5. I'd prefer that your characters are original, but if you have a compelling reason why you want to be a character from an anime or a video game or a book, and you have an awesome plot for it, you can try to persuade me. Be warned, though, you'd have to do some serious, epic bribery, like giving me a million dollars no-strings-attached or hooking me up with a publisher, to make me allow Twilight characters in this roleplay. >> 6. You may have up to THREE {3} characters, so long as all of them are not all dolls or all humans. You MUST distinguish between your characters. Different post styles would be appreciated. You can include pictures if you want, but don't make them too big. OOC speak should OOC speak should be denoted with brackets, double-parentheses, { these things }, or something similar. However you denote your OOC works. 7. Romance is encouraged. You can be in love with anyone, human or doll, and you can be of any sexual orientation that you like. However, Gaia says PG-13, so again, no smex. Especially not between humans and dolls. >.o 8. I intend for this to be a long term roleplay. If you're gonna be absent for awhile, let me know. 9. PM your profiles to me. Your appearance can be words or a picture, whatever describes your character best. If you're using an actual, real BJD as a reference, be it a company picture or a doll that someone owns, pictures would be preferable to telling us that you're this company's doll of this mold with this faceup. As a rules-reading check, please title your PM "Dolls That Breathe". And for the love of all, pleeeease use the right profile. Doll character has a doll profile, human character has a human profile. Thanks.
This should go without saying: HAVE FUN. <333333
