Bhekizitha sighed happily as he rolled over on to his back and wiggled around, using the boulder he was laying on's rough surface to scratch an itch. It was a beautiful day outside, even though the sun was mostly hidden by the clouds above. Once his itch was properly taken care of, Bhek returned to his stomach and peered out over the grasslands with his sharp green eyes. He liked to know what was going on in his surroundings and so he always made sure to keep an eye on them. Satisfied that all was well, the adolesant cheetah rolled back over and went on using the boulder to scratch his back.

User ImageThis looked new. Xenia stood at the edge of the jungle, under the comfortable shade of a tree. For some reason the trees grew sparser the farther she ventured from her nana’s den. As the trees faded away the ground became rocky, dry, and eventually Xenia found herself standing in a sea of tall golden grass. Her mouth gaped at the enormous blue sky above her and her fur bristled as if she expected it to fall right on top of her. She stepped back nervously, stealing a frightened glance at the trees behind her before venturing deeper into the vast emptiness with her body low to the ground.

One blue tipped ear flicked. She turned and gasped at the sight of a much larger feline lying on top of a very large boulder. If she had stopped to think about it, the adolescent wasn’t doing anything menacing. But the sight of someone so much bigger than her – and she wasn’t even sure what kind of animal she was looking at – caused the little leopon to yip and hide herself in the grass. Her blue and violet pelt resembled a bed of flowers growing between the blades of golden savannah grass.

A soft yip made Bhek's ear twitch and instantly he was on his feet and staring out over the grasslands. It took a minute, but he soon noticed a spot of purple and blue that hadn't been there before. A smile twitched at his lips and he jumped down to the ground. "Hello? What're you doing over there?" He called out, his voice warm and friendly. Hopefully he wouldn't futher scare the cub.

He'd seen this cub before, but only from a far. He knew that she was a new member of the pride and so he now felt the need to welcome her in. That is, if she would stop trying to hide...

A small, furry head rose above the grass, ears pulled back from extra wide eyes the color of deep water. Her small mouth opened wide. She looked around franticly, as if lost. Her instincts told her to hide behind the nearest familiar adult, but the two of them appeared to be alone in the strange, golden place of the big sky. She turned back to him, swallowing nervously.

Xenia couldn’t explain why she was afraid. For whatever reason, strange adults always made her feel this way.

Aw, he was scaring the cub. Bhekizitha frowned and lay down a few feet away from Xenia, frowning. "What's the matter, squirt?" He smiled in what he hoped with a comforting way. "Am I scaring you? I guess am just huge, huh? Well don't worry, I won't hurt you. Infact, I'd rather be your friend. What's your name? Mine's Bhekizitha." His tail moved side to side behind him as he attempted to calm the leopon cub.

“Xexe,” Xenia stammered softly, using her baby name. She did that sometimes when she was scared. Now that she knew his name and he knew her’s she felt a little better. Bhek seemed nice. She sat on her rump, hunching a little as she looked at him.

She took a deep breath and said, “I saw a bunny in the jungle and she looked scared so I tried to help her but she ran away and I followed her, because she looked so scared, and then I came here and trees got farther away and I looked up… and I saw the big sky.” She glanced at the big sky, her jaw hanging open. She blinked and turned to Bhek. “I think she went back to her mommy.”

"Xexe huh? That's a pretty name." Bhek's eyes twinkled and he looked toward the wall of trees behind him. "You ran after a bunny? Wow, you must be pretty fast to do that, even if you couldn't catch her." The cheetah added cheerfully as he returned his gaze to Xexe. Her amazement at the sky made him chuckle softly and he lifted his head up to stare at the sky as well. "It's beautiful, isn't it? So huge and blue... It almost looks like it may fall, but it never has and probably never will." The cheetah sighed and looked back to Xexe again. "This is your first time being out on the grasslands, huh?"

“I hope it doesn’t! I always thought that the trees hold up the sky but there’s not any trees out here.” Xenia giggled and shifted her paws nervously. Bhak seemed very nice.

She nodded, straightening up a little bit and smiling softly. “Uh-huh! I live in the jungle with my brothers and sisters. What kind of animal are you?”

Bhek smiled, "Yeah, it does look like the sky is held up by the trees, doesn't it? But it's not. The sky is magical and it just floats up there, kind of like a giant bird that just goes on and on and on." This young and naive cub amused him and it was pretty fun talking with her.

"Me? I'm a cheetah. I live with my two brothers and my mother." He explained with a warm grin. "So who's your mommy? I might have met her."

“I don’t know,” Xenia said innocently. “We’ve lived with the nannies as long as I can remember. My nana told me her name was Clotho and she was a leopard. I think she must have been nice. Do you know who your mommy is?”

"Yes, I do. Her name is Isikali." The cheetah hesitated, then admited, "I don't know who my father is though." The cheetah rolled over on to his side and turned his head to look at Xenia. "But the nannies aren't that bad, right? My mom knows them pretty well. She knows a lot of others in the pride. Have you met many others of the pride yet?"

“Uh-huh! They’re really nice and smart and tell good stories.” Tilting her head, Xenia moved closer to Bhek and sat down beside him. “I don’t know who my dad is either. Nana said my mommy didn’t mention his name when she… left us. I guess he wasn’t so nice. But she did tell me that my dad was a lion!”

Her fur prickled and a smile spread across her face. “That means I could be reeeeaaaaal big someday! Do you think I’ll have a mane?”

Bhekizithia nodded, "Yep! The nannies always know the best stories. I remember, when I was your age, I used to go sit and listen with them all the time. It was always nice." The cheetah chose to leave the topic of their fathers alone.

Now, the cheetah chuckled and very gently reached over to nudge Xenia's side. "Manes are for boys silly." He stated lightly before adding, "But I'm sure that you'll be quite the grown up once you're big. All the lions I've seen have been pretty big."

Xenia giggled and put her paw on Bhek’s nose. She felt a little disappointed that she wouldn’t have a mane when she grew up. The boys’ manes looked so soft and pretty. Right now it didn’t seem to matter. “Nana told me that lions are big and strong and leopards are graceful and quiet. What are cheetahs like?”

"Hmm, that's a good question." Bhekizitha frowned in thought, though a smile twitched at his muzzle everytime he remembered that there was a small paw on his nose. "Well, us cheetahs are very fast and we've got pretty good eye sight. Plus, we can sound like a bird." With that he gave a chirp and smiled down at the cub next to him.
