Are any of you guys unfairly seated? Every first violin I can see either can't play a fourth finger or ignores it completely, how about you?

now im fairly seated. only guy that might've beaten me was too stupid to practice before he challenged me and lost because of rhythms, then quit to play oboe. although i dont rly show off so some of my section might not respect me even though now the oboe does. -.-

we don't have 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc chairs, here. we just sit wherever within our section, which i believe is pretty fair.

that happened 2 me once. i disappeared for a couple of months to go to drivers ed and when i got back they pushed me to last chair of our trumpet section. however when they did that, i ended up sitting next to a baritone. He was really nice and used to be a trumpet player 2. by the end of the year, i ended up playing baritone for graduation with a guy from siu-e and i still currently play the baritone until i graduate or if our bd gets fired.

Hells yah!
I joined the band Wind ensamble at the start of second semester, because I had to take computors for a semester. However, when I joined I became forth chair out of four ( 1st chair is the contra player). This is more of a setup thing than skill level, clearly, because the "2nd chair" has been playing for 6 months. He sits next to the section leader because she needs to watch him and help him learn, and keep him from falling asleep. But, despite this fact, the contra player gives this kid 1st part and the duty of being section leader in her absence, while I have to play 2nd part and try to motivate him and the third chair girl to play in the section leader's absence. scream I really wish the BD would give sectionals, so that I could show the section that I am not a last chair player.

There's only 5 people in my band, so we sit in a row.
Flutes Clarienets Trumpet. That's the order we're seated in.

I've never been to crazy about where my chair seating is. I started out fifth chair tuba and over two and a half years I'm now third chair. I'm happy, but I'm going to challenge second chair to simply bruise her ego a bit. She drives me nuts, she's getting so cocky. Even if I don't win, I told my BD I wanted him to say 'oh it was really close, and hard to decide' or something, so maybe she'll COME TO PRACTICE. D<

Thats how it is in my band to. the section leaders sit at the head of the section tho, and they decide who will play which part depending on their skill. actually, most of the time they ask which person thinks they can play the part, or if they notice a particularly skilled player, they give them first. they just make sure that every part is filled.
