The wind grew harsher, biting deeper as the sun slipped below the horizon. Shadows crawled over themselves as more and more of the light vanished, growing bolder as they slipped away from the trees and spread out over grass crisping with frost.
The moon, ripe and heavy in the night sky, fought for dominance over the darkness of night, rising steadily to take the place of the sun, its light feeding the shadows.
Silent as a ghost, the enormous alpha slipped through the near living shadows, his nose to the wind as his heavy paws crunched lightly through the grass. His blue eyes nearly glowed when the moon struck them, his jaws parting in a happy grin when he caught the familiar smell of his one and only.

A shiver ran down the canid's spine, the cold nipping at his nose, ears, and tail. How long has it been since he faced the cold alone? The darkness was creeping all around as night took hold of the day to the early hours, the stars dotting the skies and moon shining as brightly as the late-sun. The familiar scent of his alpha was close, but his intent on other matters overwhelmed the desire to go to his side. Nose against the ground, he continued to sniff about but his scent was all he could find.

Flicking his ears, the big alpha gazed longingly at the moon, and the stretch of land bathed in its light. His packlands called to him, but he had a greater duty now. His rounds had been completed for the day, and he was reassured his pack was safe.
Sighing heavily, he turned and followed the scent of his mate, picking up his pace the closer he got. The both of them were on a mission, and if they didn't succeed . . . He shook himself as he moved, not willing to think about it.

The youth raised his head and took a few sniffs and again he tried the ground, taking the cold nips to his nose. The scents were a mixture of the vagabonds and those who have passed through here and there. It was difficult to find any traces of the specific entity he was looking. The harder he tried, the more he felt defeated. Ears back and tail down, a soft whimper escaped his maw.
"D-Deimos, I can't find anything. Are you sure she's even around here anymore?" The charcoal-blue wolf asked, deep golden eyes peering over his shoulder toward the approaching alpha. Though he wished it hadn't, but doubt was starting to creep into his heart.

Hearing the distress in his mate's voice, Deimos padded up beside the smaller wolf, rubbing his cheek against Ehrek's, a soft growl in his throat. "She's hear, love. I can still smell her. The b***h has made sure to stay on her side of the river."
His ears twitched again, locking in on the sound of the river close by. The demon's den was about a mile from the churning water, and if she was as close as Jahka had hinted in her pregnancy, it would explain how stale and feint her scent was.
"C'mon," he said softly, nipping at the smaller wolf's charcoal ear as he started towards the river.

With Deimos around, his spirits would always lift and that hope that their goal was with their grasp. Ehrek snapped his jaws to affirm that he was ready for just about anything concerning the female who they sought after.
"It is not her staying on her side of the river that worried me, Deimos, it was if she would sit still long enough for us to find her..." the male replied quickly keeping pace with the alpha and walking beside him. Deep down, he wished some things could be prevented, but down there, he knew some things cannot be avoided.

((thanks, everyone :] ))
When they reached the river, Deimos leapt easily from rock to jutting rock, never once getting his paws wet until he landed on the opposite bank. The scent was already stronger, already stinging his nose. His tail curled lazily over his back, and he glanced back at Ehrek, his expression softening at the sight of his Northern Lights.
But then he thought on his mate's words. "You think it's a trap . . . "

Ehrek wasn't as agile as Deimos, well, maybe he was, but he certainly wasn't going to break his legs by slipping on a rock just to get onto the other side of the river. Looking at the current, strong and steady, if he moved quickly, he'll make it across. Without much hesitation, he bounded across the surface, splashing a few times and making it to the other side with heavily wet fur. Shaking, he nipped his mate with a grin.
"Not so much a trap, I do not think a pregnant female could move too much and set up anything elaborate. What I was more concerned about was for her to sit in her den for us to stroll right in. She could have moved . . . but the scent is strong, isn't it?"

Smiling, Deimos shook his head. "Silly mutt. You're soaked . . . " The big alpha dragged his tongue against Ehrek's wet ruff before nipping at his ear. "And yes, to me, this place reeks. She is still here. Why, I don't know. She's not stupid, so it doesn't make sense as to why she hasn't left . . . "

"I may be wet, and a mutt, but I don't have my scent anymore," The little wolf replied with a raspberry of innocence at the larger alpha. Though their situation was dire, that did not mean it would hurt them to have a little fun. Turning his head toward the direction of the scent, he let a soft growl past his lips.
"If she moved or not, we should take advantage of it quickly before she gets wise..."
