X X X X X X X X X X X X X _____________❧ ɑbout the soul ❧____ Fire opals are unique in the lush world of the opals. They were already admired as symbols of the most fervent love in ancient times, in India and in the ancient Persian kingdom, and among the peoples of Central America and the Amerindians. It was believed that a gem that bubbled over with vivacity to such an extent as the fire opal could only have been created in the waters of paradise. The Mayas and Aztecs loved this gemstone and liked to use it in mosaics and for ritualistic purposes. They called it quetzalitzlipyollitli, the 'stone of the bird of paradise'. Yet one day, the gemstone knowledge of Mexico's natives, which had been handed down from generation to generation, somehow sank into oblivion for a long time ... ... until, in or around the year 1835, the fiery treasures hidden in the Mexican highlands were remembered, and work was gradually begun on the systematic mining of the places where they had been found. Today, the fire opal is regarded as the national gemstone of that country.
It is in Mexico that the most significant fire opal deposits in the world lie. Rock strata containing opals run through the Mexican highlands, with their many extinct volcanoes. With a few exceptions, the gemstone, which lies hidden in cavities and crevices, is extracted in open-cast mines, the work giving rise to impressive canyons with walls up to 60 metres high and labyrinthine passages which wind their way through the mining areas.
Sometimes, these orange-red gemstones are also found in other countries, in Honduras or Guatemala, in the USA, Canada, Australia, Ethiopia and Turkey, but these are mostly sites of little or no economic significance. With Brazil it is a different matter. Several years ago, in an agate mine near Campos Borges in the South Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Sul, fire opals coloured yellow to orange were discovered. They distinguish themselves by their beautiful colour, often with slight clouding, but without play of colour. Their warm, expressive orange comes in all varieties from yellow to light red, sometimes with a brownish undertone. What is particularly remarkable is the sheer size of the raw stones. Some of them are as big as a man's fist, which opens up completely new possibilities in the way they can be worked. Today, these Brazilian fire opals are setting new trends in the fascinating world of gemstones.
A powerful gemstone with a vivacious colour
The fiery, warm glow of the fire opal beguiles jewel enthusiasts the world over. This radiant orange simply cannot be overlooked! The fire opal, which, like the other opals, consists of silicic acid with a relatively high water content, was named for its colour. The colour itself comes from fine traces of iron oxide. With a hardness of between 6 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale, however, the fire opal is among the somewhat sensitive gemstones which require a protective setting, especially when worn as a ring stone.
Not all fire opals are the same. We differentiate between the common fire opals, which, depending on their quality, are either faceted or cut into cabochons, and the especially valuable ones, which, in addition to their vivacious colour, also have the gaudy play of colour typical of opals. But with or without play of colour, the fire opal plays its part as a top quality gemstone to perfection.
Even those who prefer not to subscribe to the energies in gemstones and the forces which emanate from them will undoubtedly get a feeling of warmth and well-being when they look at a fire opal. In gemstone therapy, opals are generally regarded as gems which people choose intuitively when they are working on a particular aspect of their personality. Seen like this, the fire opal is a good means of helping to make feelings flow and resolve blockages. Connoisseurs say that fire opals bestow courage, stamina, will-power and energy on the wearer. Thanks to their force they disperse old, long outdated ways of thinking and make room for new ones. The warm, fiery orange-red has a positive effect on the psyche and conveys a profound sensation of warmth, peace and harmony. The fire opal is the lucky stone of those born under the sign Aries.
The drier the place where it is found, the more durable the fire opal
Fire opals are either faceted - that is, as far as their transparency allows - or cut as a cabochon, since this is the shape which best brings out the rich glow of this orange jewel. It is the oval which is regarded as the classical shape for valuable fire opals. Brazilian raw stones, however, are also cut into many other imaginative shapes, their sheer size giving cutters and gemstone designers almost unlimited freedom for both work and play.
In spite of their relatively low hardness, opals are not actually that easy for the cutter to work with. When setting up the cut, he must pay attention to the direction in which the stone shows its play of colour to the best advantage. When working on the raw stone, the cutter - and later the setter - must take care to ensure that the gem does not come into close contact with great heat, since the water content of the fire opal is unevenly distributed and the stone can crack if dried artificially. Indeed, when the raw stones are found, many fire opals are covered in a chalky white weathering crust, a sign that the stone has aged through loss of water and become cloudy and cracked. Whether and to what extent a fire opal is susceptible to this ageing process is not only dependent on how it is handled, but also has to do with its origin. But an experienced gemstone specialist can judge by where it was found whether a fire opal is going to be durable or not. Having a very precise knowledge of the places where their stones are discovered, opal specialists are able to answer for their durability. One rule of thumb goes: the drier the place where it was found, the more durable the opal.
The tolerance of the fire opal to extreme heat is just as poor as its resistance to acids, alkaline solutions and sharp objects. Very unfavourable conditions compel the opal to surrender its moisture, which can make it cloudy and cracked. Like all opals, it should not be exposed to intense light over long periods. However, it loves to be worn a lot, since this enables it to maintain its water balance, using the moisture of the wearer's skin and that of the air. Having said that, it should be protected against contact with cosmetics. Fire opals which have become matt through being worn a great deal can be repolished.
A gemstone for people with a positive approach to life
Play of colour, body colour and transparency are the three criteria which determine the price of a fire opal. The more transparency and 'fire' it has, and the more intense the deep red of its body colour, the more valuable it will be. The rarest, and thus the most highly esteemed, is the intense red-orange fire opal from Mexico with its strong play of colour. A higher value is placed on fine cabochons with the much loved typical play of colour of the opals than on good, faceted fire opals. These gems, which glow from orange to red, are treasures which appeal most of all to active people with a positive approach to life. Their warm, fiery colour gives us vigour, fills us with the joys of life and opens our senses to the beauty of Nature. After all, fire opals are themselves a piece of Nature in its most beautiful form.
How opals are formed Australia produces around 97% of the world’s opal. 90% is called ‘light opal’ or white and crystal opal. White makes up 60% of the opal productions but cannot be found in all of the opal fields. Crystal opal or pure hydrated silica makes up 30% of the opal produced, 8% is black and only 2% is boulder opal.
The town of Coober Pedy in South Australia is a major source of opal. Andamooka in South Australia is also a major producer of matrix opal, crystal opal, and black opal. Another Australian town, Lightning Ridge in New South Wales, is the main source of black opal, opal containing a predominantly dark background (dark-gray to blue-black displaying the play of color). Boulder opal consists of concretions and fracture fillings in a dark siliceous ironstone matrix. It is found sporadically in western Queensland, from Kynuna in the north, to Yowah and Koroit in the south.
The Virgin Valley opal fields of Humboldt County in northern Nevada produce a wide variety of precious black, crystal, white, fire, and lemon opal. The black fire opal is the official gemstone of Nevada. Most of the precious opal is partial wood replacement. Miocene age opalised teeth, bones, fish, and a snake head have been found. Some of the opal has high water content and may desiccate and crack when dried. The largest black opal in the Smithsonian Museum comes from the Royal Peacock opal mine in the Virgin Valley.
Another source of white base opal in the United States is Spencer, Idaho. A high percentage of the opal found there occurs in thin layers. As a result, most of the production goes into the making of doublets and triplets.
Other significant deposits of precious opal around the world can be found in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Turkey, Indonesia, Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Ethiopia.
In late 2008, NASA announced that it had discovered opal deposits on Mars.Information from: Wikipedia and Gemstone.org
In some belief systems, it is believed the opal is the house of a half serpent/half demon and the fiery appearance of the opal is the demon's attempt to capture the person holding it.

X X X X X X X X X X X X X _____________❧ the fel essences ❧____ Claustrophobic Water - Typically in a container water will seep into the edges to fill out the space its in to the best of its ability. This water however clusters together and moves en masse, but never to the edges of a container. Always the claustrophobic water remains as a child would hide in the back corner of a dark room as if its afraid to take up all the space its able to.
Unwavering Sand - No matter how hard the wind blows, or how great a downpour of rain, this sand will not move. With a hardness nearly equivalent to to stone, the only way it will "move" is when you pick it up and sift it through your hands. Even then, though, the wind will not carry it away, it will simply fall straight to its original resting place as if it can't be bothered to do anything else.
Crying Stone - Stones are solid things that neither bleed nor cry, yet there is one stone that has been found to excrete salty liquid reminiscent of tears. To the touch it is both solid and sure in your hand, but when held by people with emotions of sadness, etc, the stone begins to 'cry', leaving your hand went with a slight sheen of liquid. The stronger the emotion of the person holding it, the more liquid it excretes. In rare moments, it has also been found that the stone will 'cry' when around someone who is experiencing a particularly strong negative emotion without that person needing to hold onto the stone. Reasons for this peculiarity have not yet been found. Voiceless Gale - This is a powerful gale that would normally shriek and howl as it blows, but is noiseless in its efforts, making it completely and utterly silent. Gales are winds that blow at high speeds and crop up at random, they are not the steady harsh winds of a storm that are often accompanied by rain, sleet, nor snow, but instead hard to predict and can appear suddenly and with little warning. The silence of this gale makes it not only impossible to know of its existence until the force of the wind hits you, but makes it an extremely dangerous quarry in that you will never hear it come up behind you. [Re-named after Nikiana's suggestion, 2.25.09] [Edited again 3.02.09 after Platy's suggestion. Mostly just expanded on the concept.] [Edited a third time on 3.03.09] [Struck from the Fel Essences List after concluding its just not interesting enough. As amusing as a voiceless coyote would be, I'm leaning more towards Unwavering Sand + Coyote now... 9.11.09]
Rippled Stone - When you drop a pebble into a body of water, ripples are produced and will issue forth until the force of the pebble's drop no longer exists. When a ripple bumps into something, it will echo off in another direction, forming newer ripples as it goes. Recently, a peculiar stone was found that, when touched, will ripple as if it is made of a liquid. Yet the stone itself feels solid and sure in your hands with only the vague sensation of the ripples brushing against your fingertips. [Removed due to it no longer interesting me.]
Heated Tundra - A piece of the frozen tundra of the North that seems to give off a mysterious amount of heat. Not too hot to touch, instead it gives off a soothing warmth unusual to the cold winters this piece of land would usually see. [Dunno if this is too close to current Fel Essences...?
Valkyrie's Lightning - In Norse mythology it is said that the Valkyrie go to protect their chosen in battle and take them to Valhalla. Often the Valkyries' arrival is announced with mystical lightning that crashes through the din of the battle at hand to reveal women that wound the enemy of the one they are protecting. [Odo suggested it would be more of a soul unless I make it more Fel essence-y. Working on wording it better now. c:]
Wandering Steam - Clouds of steam are most often found floating up from sources of heat full of the warmth of whatever the air has stolen them away from. This cloud of steam, however, wanders hither and yon with little to no heat and no source to be found. It is a curiosity in and of itself as it maintains the appearance of steam, too thin to be a fog, but too thick to be just a random draft of air. A gentle warming of the air occurs when its around, but its certainly not enough to warm yourself with on a cold night. [Adjusted per suggestions given, 2.25.09] [Redone 3.03.09]
---- Fel Essence Questions: Would a Bleeding Stone or Crying Stone be permitted? I realize that there is a stone in real life that when you grind at it and your sweat mixes with it, it will look as though your hands are bleeding, but what about a stone that actually...excretes a liquid as if it were alive? Or is that not considered an essence? (Sorry if that's a bad question, I'm new to this and just trying to figure everything out. <3) Question will be redirected to Mouse, next time I see him/her online and at 305. <3 Has been okayed by Mouse. Is now being worked into a proper Fel Essence. ^^
Is Unburning Fire a permitted Essence, depending on how its written, or would that be considered too close to anything currently at Lab 305? Has been scratched from the idea list. Thank you Platy! <3

X X X X X X X X X X X X X _____________❧ ɑbout the raeven ❧____ Raeven Idea 1 Fel Essence: Unwavering Sand Soul: Fire Opal Name: Anoki Gender: Male Alignment: Personality:

---------------Powers--------------- Passive:
Active:
Raeven Idea 2 Fel Essence: Crying Stone Soul: Fire Opal Name: Gender: Female Alignment: Personality:
Food Source: Feeds on the tears created by strong emotions. In the later stages would be able to possibly feed on the energy created by those strong emotions - the only effect this would have on the person s/he is feeding off of would be a slight dampening of the emotion but not total theft of it.
---------------Powers--------------- Passive: Increased olfactory senses.
Active: Emotional Dampening - As the Raeven grows strong, s/he could learn how to help people regulate their emotions by feeding off of them, creating a dampening effect on the emotion that has gotten out of control. In effect, the act of feeding on tears/the energy created by them the Raeven would "stop" a person's tears.
Emotional Heightening: There is the potential that instead of dampening an emotion, s/he could also push someone past the brink and to tears on something they are already feeling. This would only heighten the emotions the personal already has and allow the Raeven a much stronger food source - or amusement, of a sorts if that was their thing.
Weaknesses: Being around people who are not easily ruffled or who do not experience strong emotions would lead to fewer food sources for this particular Raeven.
The increased olfactory senses. Stronger abilities where scents lie is a double edged sword.

X X X X X X X X X X X X X _____________❧ ɑbout the guardian ❧____ O O O ooooooooo BLURB: John is a twenty two year old that presently stands six foot three, if you can get him to stand up straight enough to measure him. He is Catholic, but not an Orthodox by any means. Instead, he has combined the lessons of spirituality from his village into the teachings of Catholicism to reach a happy balance between his roots and his religion. During the summer months he enjoys playing professional guide for people who want to explore the forests in the area. During the school year, he plays at being a college student working towards a double degree in Linguistics and Anthropology while picking up odd jobs here and there to keep himself out of trouble. He is a friendly young man who is always willing to lend a hand to those in need and make new friends. John is known for his patience, but once his temper boils over can get a bit out of hand with holding grudges or yelling and stomping about.oooooooootrait იი1 Some say curiosity killed the cat, others say satisfaction brought him back... The hours working at scrimshaw, tracking, and hunting have taught John considerable patience and the art of waiting for hours for the right thing to come along. He has also learned to walk quietly and smoothly and to talk softly to avoid alerting others to his presence - after all, a loud voice or loud moves in the midst of a caribou or moose hunt can only lead in the game running away or charging you and no one wants an eight foot tall moose chasing them down. The village Elders also say that if you screw up during a hunt and the game runs off, you must chase it five miles before you can return! To avoid this, John has spent much time working to perfect his tracking and hunting skills, winding up as one of the best guides the village has to offer and as such, earning him an occasional job during summer as a forest guide for tourists. Working with them John has also learned to keep the ill things he has to say in, for at least as long as he can, and to phrase even the rudest things as politely as he can - to insult a tourist is to lose customers and every dime the village can bring in is vital to their survival. oooooooootrait იი2 A fiery tempest lies within... Insert information on his temper here. oooooooootrait იი3 Time to seek the inner peace... His preference for time alone and a few close friends as opposed to time at parties and having a multitude of friends.

Writing Samples Youthful Exuberance Quietly the young man stalked through the forest, following the itty bitty footprints that had been left in the delicate underbrush of the forest path. There was a sense of urgency in his step as the bright sun had hidden itself behind a sea of dark thunder clouds and the taste of static electricity grew on the air with every breath he took. John was in search of his younger brother whom he fondly doted over and who had gone off into the woods to look for berries to pluck with some of the other younger boys. Though they had promised to not go far, John knew that just as when he had promised he'd go only to the edge of the forest that they, too, would go as far in as they could get away with. A small sigh escaped from his mouth as he glanced back up at the sky only to see the clouds growing angrier and fatter as if they would burst any time now.
Once more John's speed increased at the realization that the storm could very well start with him in the forest and that it would be a dangerous position to be in. The trees were tall and would attract attention from the lightning that was sure to come crashing to the Earth and it was not something he looked forward to, to be caught in the middle of a bad storm with the frustrated animals shouting their warnings to one another as they were even now. The calls of birds caught his attention and the chattering of squirrels that sounded very similar to when someone was too close to their home drew him off the beaten path and near to one of the many small creeks that littered Koyukon territory. As the wind started to pick up and he imagined he felt the first large rain drop touch the top of his head he located the small group of young boys and caught his nukaaluga in the middle of them, a dark purple oozed all over his face and giggling with pleasure as the other boys tossed additional berries at him, causing the four year old to try to catch as many as he could with his mouth and laughing with pleasure even if he missed.
Frustration and anger crossed the elder boy's face as he realized they were all completely unaware of the fact the storm was coming and they could be in danger if caught in the midst of the tall trees when it started. Even if the storm didn't get them, the agitated animals would be overly protective and more likely to be easily provoked and yet they sat playing a silly game instead. With a shake of his head, he stepped forward and cleared his throat loudly to garner their attention before finally opening his mouth to speak, "Nukaaluga, big storm is coming, it is time to head home before it started." John spoke with confidence and with the expectation the other, younger boys would quickly follow what he said and anger flashed across his face once more as his very own brother ignored his warning and picked up a large handful of the blueberries at his feet before tossing them towards John, trying to involve him in the game at hand.
The wind picked up a little and began to make the branches on the trees around them sway as the birds flapped fussily and chirped their final warnings and goodbyes before turning to their homes to huddle in safety until the storm had passed. Hazel eyes flashed around to see what the animals were doing and what the clouds looked like before he stepped forward and into the circle of boys. This time, he spoke with the authority of a Hunter, "We leave now. Storm will get very bad, very quickly." A quick glance at the half empty baskets and purple hands and faces before he continued, "We will come back tomorrow to collect more, so pick up your baskets and let's go before it gets dangerous." Another glance up at the sky left him with a large splash on his forehead that quickly rolled down his face as he moved to glare down at the boys, "If you don't move now, the Elders will find out, you know."
And with that, they all snatched up their baskets and glowered up at the older, taller boy before beginning their solemn march back to their village. As the last one turned his back to him and he bent down to pick up little Christopher a small, sly smile touched his lips and he finally laughed as the rain began to pour down on them. "Come, nukaaluga, time to go home and get cleaned up before Father catches you!"
Christopher clapped his hands and giggled before scrunching up his eyes at his older brother as John picked him up and began to take him home, slightly suspiciously he asked, "You wouldn't really tell on me, would you, aapiyaba, would you?" The boy's pudgy cheeks and lips pushed into a pout as he stared innocently at him as John just laughed again with a quick wink, "Maybe I will, maybe I won't!" The first crack of lightning lit through the air and the tall forest guide picked up his pace again as the storm really began, laughing at the thought of what their Father would say once he saw the purple covered face of his brother and how his Grandmother would react to them tracking mud and blueberry goo across her precious floors.
"What a way to end the day," he thought as he finally reached their home and opened the door and quietly peeked in, only to have Christopher ruin it and laugh at the sneaking. A throat was cleared and footsteps grew closer and finally the two brothers looked at each other and laughed in unison at the raised eyebrow of their Father and angry stance of their Grandmother. Sure, they were in trouble, but at least they'd had some fun while they were at it!

Currently working on coming up with Fel essences and waiting to hear from Chrys in regards to a third soul idea. Will work on the Raeven information after finding that out.
Otherwise, though, I guess we'll consider this open for critique? I'll be adding additional details, though, as we go along and update everyone as I do so.

Okay... let's start with the Fel Essences...
Voiceless Wind: Wind doesn't really always make a noise... if it's gentle enough, it's fairly silent. You may want to rework some of the wording on this if you're intending the wind to be strong, forceful. Perhaps calling it Voiceless Gale and putting in the description some about the strength?
Still Water: This... sounds like the exact opposite of Ravina's Never Ending Ripple... even some of the wording is similar to hers... You want to watch out for that...
Cold Steam: This one... needs a lot of work. The essences are not normal. Steam comes from hot stuff... Your steam's cold, but... it needs more. Perhaps it doesn't come from anything, kinda like Ebony's Lingering Smoke... Kyou's also said that there's a lot of ice essences... and this one could get close, depending on how you work it. ^^"
... moving on...
Coyote: Just a note here... someone has a quest for a wolf soul... just as a heads up for you.
Stargazer Lily: Oooh... pretty! (Don't really have much else to say here.)
Voiceless Wind/Coyote Raevan: ... Why pick such a vocal animal and then rob it of its voice? sad Poor thing.
Hope this helps you!

Voiceless Wind - *nods* This is true - I'm mostly used to the winds around in the valley or on the way to Anchorage where they can reach 80mph, so I forgot about the gentle breeze. sweatdrop I will definitely work on that. Thank you. ^^
Still Water - Ack, to be honest, I wanted one to do with water and Ravina helped me with that one. Sorry, will definitely re-work if it I use it all. Thank you for pointing that out. ^^
Cold Steam - *nods* I will take that into consideration and definitely work on it more, it was one that came from a brainstorming session over MSN, and I hadn't really put a lot of thought into it yet. I will pay close attention to it when I try to flesh it out so that it doesn't become too much like ice or anything that you guys currently have.
Coyote - Coyotes aren't really wolves, so I'm not sure if that would be a problem...I know they sound similar and can look similar, but they're two different animals. They tend to be of a more slender build and are considerably more adaptable to being around humans than wolves are. (Coyotes have no qualms about eating your trash, but wolves would prefer to stay away and just eat your dogs or cats if they have to, and usually on the outskirts of town, not right in the midst of it.) I will definitely take a look at the wolf quest, though, to make sure its not too similar. Thank you for pointing that out, I really appreciate it. ^^
Stargazer Lily - They're my favorite flowers, so I just had to do something with them. ^^;;
Voiceless Wind/Coyote Raeven - I know it sounds really harsh, but since coyotes are very adaptable, I think it would be an interesting thing to look at. Its definitely not a finalized thing, it just struck me as being interesting (and, I admit, a bit amusing) to do. The animals are also known for their adaptability and in mythology are generally considered as tricksters, so I think Anoki would find a way to make his 'voice' heard.
Hm. All in all, I have a lot of research and work to do on this yet, I think. Thank you for not only taking the time to read over my concepts, but also to point out flaws and things to work on, Nikiana, I greatly appreciate it and will work hard to fix those things. smile
