January 109

Silversoul paced about outside the Fort, clearly agitated. Iris he called mentally, How much longer? His bonded had gone inside nine minutes ago, intending to be back shortly. But in her mind he could see a tall, handsome young Private and feel her awkward shyness. Now is not the time for romance. We must be off soon if we wish to reach New Eve before dark.

His rider did not respond, leaving the Gamma frustrated and perhaps a bit lonely. For three years he had held the primary place in her heart, received her attention and adoration, but as off the past several months Iris had begun responding to the admiring looks and comments from the scrawny young humans she met. Don't make unnecessary attachments--especially outside our Fort. He wouldn't admit he was jealous...but some similar emotion nagged him...

Feeling rejected and forlorn, he exhaled loudly and sat in the snow, letting his head droop onto his forelegs. Humans.

"Has your Rider taken to looking at the latter sex as well?" Came a soft, slightly sarcastic voice from the a snow covered rock. Shadeclaw had lain motionless there, snow gathering upon her until it seemed there was nothing there. She smiled inwardly. At least she wasn't the only one frustrated by the lack of attention.

True, Shadeclaw still held an unknown place within Saaki's very soul. But at times, it proved a locking of horns when it came to will. She stood, and shook the snow from her fur in two quick rustles, before she jumped down lightly to join the other wolf. "What is your name?"

Startled, Silversoul glanced upwards at a barely visible, wolf-shaped mound of snow. Rather surprised he hadn't caught her scent sooner, he ceased in his pacing and addressed her in his quiet, strong manner. Forgive me, miss, I was not aware of your presence. Ever polite, he chose his words and spoke them in a careful, yet not overly slow manner, relaxing his body in a manner quite unusually friendly to a female much younger than him. And yes, I am afraid she has grown...distant. He hated the idea, and it hurt to say it aloud though he knew Iris would never forget him.

But she had asked for his name, and it would be rude to keep the lady waiting. I am called Silversoul, he answered pleasantly. And might I ask for your name? A moment's thought followed. This female's perception of the source of his agitation was uncanny--she couldn't more than a yearling. With a slight wave of his tail to indicate he intended no conflict, he added, As well as how you knew the situation with my bonded...?

I am called Shadeclaw. She said with a bemused smile spreading across her muzzle. Though young, she knew the look of one who missed the company of their closest companion, in the wolves' cases - their riders. She winked slightly, blue eyes ablaze with scornful curiosity.

I am sorry for interrupting your prowling. She sniffed quietly, trying desperately not to seem outrightly rude, but she was enjoying herself, just the company and conversation that seemed sorely lacking as Saaki went about her duties, or spoke with other riders. She would have followed her rider within the walls, if it were not for the new snow that had begun to fall, tantalizing the more wild side of her to remain out in the bitter cold.

She stepped forward hesitantly, knowing still her place within a wolven hierarchy. Silversoul was older then her, this was clear, by the look of knowing that seemed to be in those eyes that gazed at her. She nosed slightly at his leg in a playful, puppy-like way, trying to be effortlessly friendly.

((lol, for all his age Silversoul is really quite clueless and innocent))

A faint shadow crossed his face as he puzzled over the young female. Despite her age she showed a shocking precocity, and her strange, almost mocking smile appeared haunting on such a young face. So many young ones these days saw death and destruction earlier on, and it did something to them inside. Every time he saw it his heart ached for their lost innocence.

All this thought transpired in an instant, and then he nodded in acknowledgment of her apology. No matter, your company is a pleasure. Especially her friendly, puppylike behavior. He had a soft spot for youngsters, and even though he felt a note of artificiality, his apprehension soon vanished. You are a member of the pack here, correct?

Shadeclaw smiled slightly at his words, heartened that he did not mind her sometimes annoying company. Yes, White Shadow has been my home since I bonded with my Rider. She raised her eyes after speaking, looking up at the grey sky with cold, bright whiteness still dropping from it's endless flay clouds.

Silversoul? Were things much different when you were my age? It seems so... I don't know. She shrugged her shoulders, puffing hot breath from her black nose, content in her thoughts that maybe there was a time when things did not happen as they did.

At least it was winter, which meant there was no fear of centipedes attacking the settlement. This was a time of revelry and relaxation among company, enjoying the snow, and the rare sunny days when the landscape was transformed into a glittering, shining world.

Taken by surprise at Shadeclaw's sudden, informed question, Silversoul thought back to his adolescent days. What had changed? Was it the coming of venomous centipedes? Moonstride's death? When he was a yearling he knew little of pain, death, and grief. These young ones had been born into an even harsher age than his own, though the age difference was not such a large one. Or perhaps the difference was the seasons--he'd been born in the winter of a Gamma pairing, but perhaps she'd been born during a time when actual battle occurred.

...there was not so much death, he said slowly, considering as he spoke. I knew nothing of the sort before I was at least a year old, and even then so little. The thought of the creatures, tearing and destroying, always filled him with dread--not fear, but the all too real wondering of who might die next. It was a perilous world they inhabited, one he hoped his generation might make safer for those to come. Have you...seen much already?

((Sorry for the long wait, sick as a dog last few days))

No, not really.

It was the simplest answer she could give to Silversoul. Though she was young, newly bonded to Saaki, she had seen a few things that had stunned her. The mood seemed to have become as cold and timid as the surrounding snow - Shadeclaw didn't like it.

She looked t Silversoul for a moment, though older then her, he still had a young air. But enough on such issues, this is a time of good fortune! Not sadness... She shook the snow from her fur, ice sticking lightly to the close growing fur. She was happy, even though a little cold.

Jumping forward, she pushed at Silversoul, grinning wolfishly at him, happy, silly, exhilarated.

((Mew, my turn to say sorry for the wait...grounded))

He caught the slightest glimmer of sadness in her eyes before she shook her fur out, covering him in powdery snow. Best to leave the past untouched, he told himself, pretending he hadn't seen.

Finally relaxing as Shadeclaw fell to playful headbutting, he tumbled over into the snow, glad of a new acquaintance to keep him company in his loneliness. Tail wagging, he swept at her legs and rolled to the side. What are the long winters like here? he asked good-naturedly. I hear that White Shadow is tamer than my own Patrol.

But then, that wasn't hard to accomplish given the oddness that went on every moment of every day back at New Eve. It was comparatively quiet here...

It truly is. She answered with a slow smile. She liked it here at White Shadow. This was her pack, her home. Though not as wild as New Eve, White Shadow had it's fun times. During the winter months, Shadeclaw and her rider would run as fast as they could outside in the snow, shattering the sanctity of quiet calm around the fort.

It was fun.

But those days grew less. And less. Till there were none. Saaki had grown a little serious, and now pored over her tasks, and studies.

Is New Eve like this? Do the snows calm the Riders?

Silversoul shook his head, smiling. The longer nights are their excuse for longer chaos, longer activities... I don't think they ever settle down. He was among one of the more laid-back, quieter ones of his pack, but he had seen enough of his comrades' activities. I find the peace and quiet here...pleasant.

New Eve's more raucous activities and human oddities never ceased to fascinate him, but really the fort was not quite suited to either him or Iris. Well...his rider might enjoy the fun if she were to grow more used to human company, but as of now her social skills just weren't strong enough. I believe our prolonged visit here may be a good thing, for both my human and me.
