Whoa... Though I'm not much of a fan of slapping ornamental gears in places where they really have no place, such as clothing, that's still pretty bad a**.
My first inspiration probably came from the Wild Wild West movie with Will Smith, and assorted video games. I've always been fascinated with gears, clocks, springs, steam power and primitive-looking machinery, but that was probably the first time it came together in a very obvious way that I could definitively put my finger on. There may have been other early influences, but I can't recall anything specific. I've seen, played, and read so much steampunk since then, it all kind of blends together.

I think that the images i posted do the gears justice though- the designer didnt make the gears the main focus of the piece. Thats what i like the most about them.

I would love to get my hands of which ever patteren you were using. I bet it turned out really good. I once made a white tafita hoop skirted dress with corseted bodice. Every thought it was amazing. maybe i'll put some pictures up sometime.

Like you I had always been drawn to all things victorian and steamy, without knowing it. My favorite movie as a kid was wild wild west, and Labyrinth, which has steampunk elements to it.
I loved the victorian poetry-- the romantic gothic movement, transcendentalism, etc. I had read all of edgar allen poe by the time I was in 6th grade. I always loved victorian fashion as well. I think it was maybe my 8th grade for me when I got dragged full force into the victorian goth fashion and culture, as well as the steampunk fashion and culture. What did it for me was when I was on the boardwalk with my family, and we decided to get one of those silly photographs where everyone dresses up in the clothing and we take a picture where no one smiles and it gets developed in sepia. They had done our hair, and everything had been retrofitted so it looked like an old saloon. I loved it so much, so I set out to find Victorian recreation clothing and items, and I found steampunk that way.

I found Steampunk through a couple of different things:
I loved the airships in the game Skies of Arcadia I love dressing up, especially in old costumes I was almost a Lolita, but it's too cute for my tastes (I would've fallen under boy-loli, because I can't stand to wear skirts for long) I love antique and old style jewelry
What pushed it over the edge, and actually gave a name to my interests, was my older brother explaining that his friend with the goggles, bandana, combat boots, and striped socks, was a Steampunk.
It seems quite a few girls are drawn to Lolita, but then find Steampunk and realize that this is what we've been seeking.

I don't know if you can say that I had any inspiration to becoming interested in the style of Steam Punk, because honestly I already was interested in aspects of it not knowing that it actually was called Steam Punk. But I guess you could say that the clothing was one big influence, because I love Victorian style clothing ( I'm rather a sucker for going to antique shops and just browsing at the antiques because I like them so much ), as well as the Sci-Fi aspects with the gears and mechanical theme of it all. I love video games like Skys of Arcadia and Final Fantasy 9, as well as Final Fantasy 6. My all time favorite RPG is Chrono Trigger, and I grew up with the anime Trigun, which definitely has some Steam Punk aspects, just a little. So I guess you could say that is a start.

I've always been interested n history, and the transitions during the 1800reds have always interested me. So I got into the whole Victorian style very early. That and a healthy mix of a love for imagination and fantasy helped me get into Steampunk. That there were a genre for it I didnät find out until I played Arcanum.

I grew up in a household full of old world charm. Leather books were always lined up on bookshelves, antique clocks were hung on walls, and there was always a big sepia toned globe sitting on the landing of my family's stair case. I suppose that's where it started. As I grew older, I had the oddest fascination for old maps and clock faces. I'd point them out anytime we were in a shop and my parents would laugh. The earthy tones and brass was so aesthetically pleasing to me. When I saw a portrait of a young Victorian man tinkering with the insides of a pocket watch when I was 15, I began to grow curious. The term steampunk was used to describe it by one of my friends. I soon found myself searching up the word and I fell in love. ^_^
