My cousin Spencer is working with me. The website has been coded and the backend for the website set up. Now he needs to skin the layout to the CMS (content management system) and merge the forums. From there we will customize the site, but hope that at that point everyone who is still interested will come to the new hangout! --
The first draft of the website is up! It isn't pretty yet by any means, but the core of the back end is set up. The forum and image gallery are merged so when you log on one you log on both.
We are working on adding in character profiles and figuring out the rest. For now you can be the first to sign up! Come talk in the first ever thread. Lets not make lots of threads yet since the forum isn't all set up yet. =33
http://174.132.169.61/~tcoccom/gallery/ http://174.132.169.61/~tcoccom/smf/
You can only put up a few pictures in the gallery right now because there is a cap there we are going to change.
We have the $250 we need to make the website! Thank you everyone who donated! We are going to start actually MAKING the website now. I'll keep you guys updated. =3A few weeks ago an idea came to me, why not have our own website? There are so many art collectors on deviantart, and I am sure even more lurking elsewhere. I checked and could not find a club of this nature on deviant art or online. We have had a wonderful home here for the last five years and perhaps it is time to evolve and create a new home for ourselves online.
I have run this idea by Raesha, Mekania, Audley, Woe and Jalil and all of them are for it. Audley has even offered to cover funding.
We have come up with the following ideas for what this website may look like.
It would be a forum of course, hopefully with the following customizations. - Crops of commissioned artwork as avatars - Besides the usual personal profile have space for up to five featured character profiles where there is room for several featured commissions. - Perhaps an optional, secondary, personal profile for artists to place samples, prices and contact information.
Requirements and the name should likely change with the move. The club would be a completely separate entity from gaia, and in many ways this guild. This is not to say we should hide our roots in anyway, we should be proud of the fact we have been around for five years and keep that history preserved. But, we have grown up and it is time to leave the nest and create our own identity as a group of serious collectors that will attract others of our ilk.
Specific requirement changes that we have come up with so far are as follows. - Only 5 collected commissions required and people can apply for an exception to the rule. It can take a long time for an artist to get around to finishing a commission, so they may have some high quality works they are waiting on that have not been completed. I am sure all of you know how that goes. They also may only be commissioning art of this nature which is more expensive. Or perhaps they do not have many pieces because they are newer to collecting and/or going for quality and not quantity. - Have it geared mainly towards original characters or avatar based creations that have evolved into personas or characters in their own right. - An age limit. 13 is the usual age limit for websites like gaia because of laws and liability. With maturity level being a concern we may want to have our limit a bit higher with the ability for current members to recommend younger users as possible exceptions. - Possibly have it open to artists to join, perhaps only by way of recommendation as well? - As part of the stipulations to join applicants would need to agree that they are aware there may be artistic nudity in some images and are of a maturity level and understanding of art not to complain about it.
If we went ahead with this would you join us? Please share any thoughts and suggestions you may have!
----
It seems plenty of people are for it! Just want to give you all a heads up that the website may take a bit to go live. I am having trouble getting ahold of Audley at the moment. If anyone can poke him to check his pms please do so!
Update 1 We have picked a name! The Cabinet of Curiosities An Order of Art Acquirers
Update 2 I went ahead and made a club account on deviantart. We would need a presence on there anyway, so might as well set it up now and get things rolling. Please hook me up with your deviantart account name and your favorite commissions to add to the club collections.

Here here!
My only suggestion is this, and Kat and I talked a bit about it on IMs too. I understand all the wanting to move away from being associated with Gaia, but OGAWG has in a way become our identity and I personally would like to see that connection incorporated into a new name, if any, for this group we are talking about boldy forging on the vast wide web. My suggestion is that even if we don't keep "Official Gaian Art Whore Guild" as our name, that we maybe do -something- with the acronym O.G.A.W.G. We are all creative people (look at all these characters spewing forth from our minds and stories to be told!), I'm sure we could come up with -something-.
Then again, maybe the majority of people feel like it's better to move on. I'm on board either way, but I'm just a very nostalgic person and would like to see some nod to our roots if it's decided to change the name for this new venture.

I vaguely recall this coming up a couple years ago, too. I was for it then, and I still am now : D

Cool with me as long as I'm not doing any work - as I said before, six classes, a TA job, and *gasp* having a social life kind of kill it for me. I barely have time to do art for myself, and I try to keep coding to a minimum... I get enough during the year.... lol.
Albeit, I don't do much RL commissioning, so I don't know how active I'd be there. I just tend to stalk around here, though, not do much either. Haha.

That definetely would be interesting, I'd love to see that <3 Though about commissioned works as avatars, there should be somewhere in the rules at least a reminder that you should ask the artist for permission to use it? Most artists don't have anything against it, but I've seen some that required contacting him/her before using the work somewhere beside signature/personal gallery. I know that some of us have pictures commissioned so long ago that it would be impossible to track the artist now - that's why I said 'reminder' xD

@Jalil: I am sure we'll come up with a satisfactory solution to the name question. ;3
@clocktock: Oh? I don't know, or just don't recall, it coming up before. Great minds think alike. ;3
Btw, I was wondering since you are a mod on here if you would you be interested in moderating the forum on the site. It would likely be more of a job though. Wanted to go ahead and offer it since your a mod here. ; ]
@[ Maxxyne ]: Same here!! xD
@WoefulInfinity: Nope, no work. Just show up with your sweet self now and then and we'll be happy as a clam. ;3
@LittleDream: Interesting question. Though the character profiles would be hosted they would still be a personal gallery pretty much. I think by not personal they mean trying to repost it on something like Deviantart or the like. But, people can contact artists about usage etc. if they need to. =]
As far as a reminder would go, probably just something along the lines of, "Be sure to adhere to any usage agreements you may hold with an artist. If you are unsure if displaying their artwork on this website is alright please contact them."

Regarding moderation, as long as it doesn't get too big and hectic, I'd be down for that. So consider me signed up for the start.

Just be aware you'll probably have things to do now. Hopefully anyway, that means we're growing. ;o Ideally it would just be answering questions and the like... hope to maintain a degree of quality control in who becomes a member. xD LittleDream Me too, with same as above - as long as it doesn't get too big, I should do just fine^^<3 Thank you for offering Little, but Mek, Clock, Audley and myself will be more than enough for now. =]

Just if it gets too big -- not that it's likely to get Gaia sized, but just as an example -- I think I may stab myself in the face repeatedly if I ever woke up one day and discovered I'd volunteered to moderate Gaia. No offense, Rae. You're a very brave soul.

No worries Jit! The site would actually be mainly for collectors. If they are artists as well they can have information about their taking commissions. There is a possibility of having it so collectors are able to nominate artists to join so we can control that. Linking artists to your featured character bios is always an option of course. Probably will have space for each member to have five featured characters with a few images of them and a link to a main area about them/gallery with more pictures. I am having trouble figuring out which ones... There is a relatively new one that doesn't even HAVE many commissions and is being very pushy. xD
